update Apart, Yet Connected
I look forward to our virtual Class Reunion on June
by 17-20, 2021. The weekend will commence with
College-sponsored events on Thursday night. You
Reunion Chair
won’t want to miss the Friday night DJ party with
Tim Parker the ’85 and ’86’s. Saturday is fully focused on
The Great Class of 1987; based on the feedback we
received from the class survey, programming in-
cludes TED Talks, a Social Justice Initiative Listening
Session and an expanded Networking Session (in
the inaugural virtual reunion tent!) to provide more
time for connection and conversation.
I’d like to recognize a special group, the Class
Reunion Planning Committee—our mission-criti-
cal classmates who worked tirelessly over the past
several months to create a virtual weekend that is
not just innovative and informative, but great fun as
well!
It is my hope that this weekend will encourage you
to attend our in-person 35th Class Reunion, “Off
The Green” in Chicago (September 2022).
Let’s Connect!

The Class of ’87 has to keep up our reputation of always having the best tent at Reunions.
Because of that, we are the ONLY class having a Virtual Platform for an interactive space online this year.
This “tent” space, on the REMO platform, will be open all day long on Saturday. Invite a classmate to meet you
there over a cup of coffee. See who is there late at night. Find your LSA friends and have them join you for a
chat. Or just meet a new classmate. You can move your “avatar” to any room, using both chat and video func-
tionality.
On Saturday evening at 6:00pm EDT (3pm PDT), we will be using this Virtual Reunion Tent to conduct the “of-
ficial business of the Class of 1987”. Sign in to hear about our 2022 In-Person Reunion in Chicago, and to elect
the next slate of officers to lead us to our 40th Reunion.
After you register for our Saturday evening events, you will receive an email with the link to our Virtual REMO
tent. From there, you can create your avatar. When you first log in, please enter your First (Maiden) and Last
Name. If you’re a technical whiz, upload a photo of yourself as well!
If you’d like to learn more about the platform, follow these links for more instructions:
https://youtu.be/O7hmoIe9Yxo or https://youtu.be/P01JxUBNU2Y. These links will be
available on the Class Website (1987.dartmouth.org) and on the FB Page. So, register for
Virtual Reunions, look for the email with the link, and take a peek before the class meet-
ing and get to know this innovative platform.
Dartmouth alums are always learning new things. Come and check it out!
Dartmouth’s Season of Service
Dartmouth declared May a “season of service” and asked all of us to serve our own communities in
honor of the College. How did we do? You don’t need me to tell you that serving others is one of the
best ways escape the paralysis of the pandemic. I dedicated myself in May to creating outdoor com-
munity theatre for elementary school kids who have seen so many of their extracurricular opportu-
nities evaporate this year. Please share your own story of engagement with the class by sending it to
me, your Alumni Council rep Heather McCutcheon Kannam (hkannam@gmail.com) or sharing it on
our Facebook page.
We are hoping to carry this focus on good work through June and our reunion. Consider sharing your
time and talents for community service during the Saturday morning of reunion, June 19th. Share
pictures or stories with us and let’s all lift each other up by finding ways large and small to make the
world a better place!

Social Justice Initiative
As a nod to President John Sloan Dickey’s quote, “The world’s troubles are your trou-
bles…”, we present our class’s Social Justice Initiative. We seek to identify specific tools
and tangible ways for members of the Class of 1987 to combat inequality and racism, all
while promoting social justice.
On Saturday, June 19, 2021, come and listen to a discussion between classmates, designed
to enhance awareness around how legislation and policy impacts housing in every major
American metropolitan area. This “listening session” will not only share details, but also
create a safe space for questions, in the hopes that it will influence further engagement
and action.

our journey since leaving Dartmouth. With Moderator Peter Murane, they will discuss the twists and turns
that life has brought to each of them.

Hi everyone!
Karyn and I wanted to thank you for your generous support of the
Dartmouth College fund, which is instrumental in making a Dartmouth
education attainable for so many students.
June wraps up our 2020/2021 campaign and we would love to see 99
classmates step up and make a donation in order to hit our class partic-
ipation goal of 35%.
If you haven’t donated this year, would you please make a gift this
week? Also, more and more classmates are selecting the “Sustaining
Gift” option which allows gifts to be paid quarterly. It’s really easy. So
please consider this option.
Here’s the link to donate: https://www.dartmouthcollegefund.org/
On behalf of current Dartmouth students, thank you! We look forward
to seeing you at our upcoming virtual reunion.
Best regards,
Karyn Wienski Calcano and Peter Murane

It has been a privilege to serve as your representative on the Alumni Council
this year, and what a year it has been. The 222nd Council meeting happened
(like everything else) on Zoom once again. But being virtual did not dampen
the effort or enthusiasm of Dartmouth Alumni to come together to discuss
the needs and challenges of our school.
I’ve heard from many of you about your concerns for Dartmouth’s direction
in several areas. The turmoil regarding the dissolution and reinstatement
of several sports teams hit ’87s hard. Although the teams are back, the to-
tal number of athletics recruits has been slightly reduced. This reflects the
college’s priorities in admissions—as a small school, the number of recruits
is still a more significant segment of the student population than it is for
our peer institutions. While there remains disagreement about exactly how
decisions were made, the new leadership of the athletics department is opti-
mistic about rebuilding confidence in Dartmouth’s support of, and affection
for, all its teams.
The elimination of some off-campus programs announced this year felt
quite abrupt to many in our class and in the larger campus community, but
we learned that these decisions were actually years in the making, based
not only on changing campus trends and downward trending participation
data, but also on the unavailability of some of the onsite support systems
to continue to work with the College. Because we went to Dartmouth at the
height of popularity for off-campus programs, I think it’s harder for us to
understand the flagging participation. I personally loved an LSA in Blois and
an FSP in Edinburgh! But after watching the presentation and listening to
questions answered, I have no doubt that the college is making these com-
plex decisions with a sincere effort to improve the student experience by
thoughtfully managing necessary changes.
The final topic about which I heard from so many of you was frustration with
Dartmouth’s COVID policies. I don’t have enthusiasm for doing a post-mor-
tem on pandemic decisions except to say that colleges across the country
struggled to plan and problem-solve. So many decisions and plans in higher
ed have to be made months in advance, even in such a rapidly evolving situ-
ation. Dartmouth’s approach was not perfect, but the situation is improving
rapidly.
If you have any other questions or concerns please know that you can always
reach out to me!
For Dartmouth!
