The history of LEGOLAND®
LEGOLAND is Denmark’s largest tourist attraction outside the capital city, Copenhagen. Since
it was founded in 1968, LEGOLAND has provided family fun and entertainment - intended
primarily for children aged 2-12 years. The LEGOLAND park’s success is built on 65 million
LEGO® bricks and inseparable ties to the LEGO Group, in which play, imagination, creativity
and learning are combined to create unique entertainment for park visitors to enjoy.
The LEGOLAND idea was born in the early 1960s. LEGO Surprising number of visitors

The cornerstones - play and learning
LEGOLAND has been renewed and improved innumerable
times since 1968. Many new attractions have been added
in the period after 2000. The park’s approach remains
faithful to the original concept and it is still based on a
special combination of play and learning centred on the
LEGO brick. Many of the attractions from the early years
are still going strong. Miniland, which was here from the
very beginning, is still at the heart of LEGOLAND and, as
in the early years, children can still take their first driving
licence in the Traffic School. In LEGOREDO® Town you
can still hear parents telling their children that they can
remember sitting on Chief Longears’ knee in order to be-
come a member of what must now be one of the world’s
largest tribes of Native Americans.
Part of the Merlin Entertainments Group
When it was founded in 1968, LEGOLAND was owned by
the Kirk Christiansen family, who also founded the LEGO
Group. In 2005, along with other LEGOLAND Parks, the
park in Billund was sold to the Merlin Entertainments
Group and thus became part of a fast-growing family
of family amusement parks. Merlin Entertainments Group
is part-owned by LEGO Holding/KIRKBI, so, in effect,
LEGOLAND is still in the hands of the Kirk Christiansen
family.
Since 1968, more than 50 million children and adults have
visited LEGOLAND in Billund.
The joy of seeing the park a second time
is actually very important at LEGOLAND
and the figures speak for themselves:
Eighty percent of visitors to the
LEGOLAND Park have visited the
park before.

Miniland
Miniland is the heart of LEGOLAND and the first area that
visitors encounter when they enter the park. It all started
here in 1968 with the houses in ”Lilleby” (Little Town).
Since then many more LEGO models have been built
around the original houses. Miniland is also surrounded by
capital cities, famous buildings, miniature towns and
interesting environments, and includes authentic models
from Denmark, Germany, Norway, Sweden, USA, the
Netherlands, England, Finland, Japan and Scotland.
We have also found space for the world of fiction in
Miniland. The Star Wars™ models were introduced in 2011.
Visitors can see scenes from each of the six Star Wars™
movies and from the animated film series, Star Wars™ The
Clone Wars™.
Miniland is built on a scale of between 1:20 and 1:40 by
model designers at LEGOLAND.
Many areas are interactive so visitors can use a joystick or
buttons to control what is happening in this LEGO universe.

Mia, Stephanie, Olivia and Andrea in the fictitious Heart-
lake City. This is the first time ever that Heartlake City,
the focal point of the LEGO Friends series, has been
constructed and displayed in a LEGOLAND park.
It was a fun challenge for the LEGOLAND model builders
to construct a city that does not exist in real life – un-
like Amalienborg Castle, Nyhavn and many of the other
Miniland models. The model builders found inspiration
in the existing LEGO Friends models, but many of the
buildings were further developed and designed from
their own imagination.

extreme attention has been given to detail.

Pirate Land
In Pirate Land, visitors meet Captain Roger and his horde
of fierce pirates, who first weighed anchor at LEGOLAND
in 1990. Pirate Land was inspired by a LEGO Pirates range
which has been popular since the 1970s.
The area was refurbished in 2008, when the outdoor Pirate
Lagoon was built. The lagoon includes a family attraction
Pirate Splash Battle, where you shoot jets of water at your
friends and try to avoid getting wet yourself, and Pirate
Water Falls, where children can splash about under the
bubbling waterfalls and enjoy a wide range of interactive
play activities.
The art of creating a ”wow” moment
To succeed as an amusement park, it is crucial that
visitors are given several ”wow” moments, by which we
mean experiences that give visitors more than they had
expected. To achieve this, a park has to have spectacular
rides and amusements but a ”wow” moment can
equally be created when the
LEGOLAND staff play with the
children. A fun sword fight with
Captain Roger or one of his
crew may make the difference
between a good and an un-
forgettable day. So all staff in
the LEGOLAND Park are
trained to play with
the children.
Facts
• The Pirate Lagoon covers an area of 8,000 m2 and was built in 2008
• The water in Pirate Lagoon is treated as if the lagoon was a
swimming pool. 468,000 litres of water are filtered every hour.
Pirate Land includes 119 LEGO models on the Pirates theme
• The largest pirate ship in Pirate Water Falls is 12 metres high.
It has three masts that are up to seven metres high.

KNIGHTS’ KINGDOM™ is an area centred on the majestic
King’s Castle - a huge medieval fairytale fortress which
was built in 1997. The King’s Castle cost DKK 45 million to
build. At that time it was the LEGOLAND Park’s largest-
ever single investment.
The main attraction is the Dragon roller coaster, which is
one of the most popular attractions in LEGOLAND.
The Vikings’ River Splash ride was added in 2006.
Olli the Dragon
When guests visit LEGOLAND they simply cannot avoid
meeting the park’s permanent residents, i.e. a large
number of different figures who enjoy talking and playing
with the visiting families every day. One of these is Olli the
Dragon, who is often seen out and about in the park with
the princess. Some people would ask why on earth there
is a dragon living in LEGOLAND but there is a very natural
explanation. Behind each of our figures is a little story
about how they came to live in LEGOLAND. Olli is no
exception.
They say that the princess came across a little
green and red egg one day when she was
walking in the park, saying hello to the
children visiting LEGOLAND. She kept
the egg safely up in the King’s Castle.
Several months later, the egg hatched
and out popped a little dragon. She cal-
led him Olli.
Fun fact
Every year there are more than 500 stunt show performan-
ces at the LEGOLAND King’s Castle. Ukrainian stuntmen
perform daring feats of strength and agility. Many of the
performers have been on the team since the shows
started more than 15 years ago and every summer
they return to Billund to fall in the water time after
time, to the sheer delight of children and adult
visitors alike.

captivity. LEGOLAND supplies sea horses to aquaria
all over Europe. Breeding success can be attributed
to several factors including that marine biologists in

Fun fact - Longears celebrates 31 seasons

the same man has taken children onto his knee to welcome them into the LEGOLAND tribe.
DO
However, he is not the only veteran in LEGOREDO® Town. For example, the country music
®
group RattleSnakes has played in LEGOREDO® Town every summer for the last 27 years.
LEGOREDO®
Town
LEGOREDO® Town, a Wild West town, is one of the classic
LEGOLAND attractions. When the Park opened in 1968,
there was a Native American settlement. Park staff went
on a field trip to the US in the early 1970s and LEGOLAND
was extended with a complete Wild West town in 1973.
Among the most popular activities in this attraction is the
LEGOLDMINE, where visitors pan for gold and can get
their gold dust and nuggets ”melted down” into a gold
coin to take home as a souvenir. Gold panning remains
as popular today as it was in the 1970s and 1980s, when
today’s parents were small and panned for gold in
LEGOLAND. We make about 70,000 gold coins every year.
Facts about LEGOREDO® Town
• Ghost - The Haunted House is a part of LEGOREDO® Town
• The legendary Tribal Chief Sitting Bull is built from
1.4 million LEGO bricks. But in 2015, he was beaten by the
world’s largest LEGO model , LEGO® Star WarsTM X-wing
Starfighter built of 5.3 million LEGO bricks
• Sitting Bull was listed in the 1986 Guinness Book
of World Records as the world’s largest LEGO figure
• The LEGO Canoe canal is 255 m long
• Each of the 17 canoes seats 4 adults or 6 children
• There are 19 horses in the horse carousel Western Riding
• LEGOLAND Billund is the only LEGOLAND park in
the world to feature a Wild West attraction
Fun fact
When LEGOLAND opened, Park Manager Arne Boutrup
made an agreement with a stable owner, who was
willing to offer pony rides in the park. As part of the
agreement, the stable owner paid the wages of the
park’s Native American. After one season, the stable
owner wished to terminate the agreement as it was
not profitable for him.
Boutrup put his thinking cap on and came up with
an idea to generate an income to finance both the
ponies and the Native American. His idea was to sell
an Indian headband with a feather as a souvenir.
This colourful souvenir was an immediate success
and has since become a LEGOLAND icon. More
than one million headbands have been sold.
New presidents
Last year, the four presidents forming the Mount Rushmore monu-
ment celebrated their 40th anniversary in the park – now in a new
and even more detailed version. The original heads from the 70s
have been replaced by four new ones. The size is the same, but
the design now reflects the very latest methods.
A total of 414,000 bricks were used, and it took the
model designers 2,100 hours to build the four
presidential heads. 17Ev

Shops
Visit the world’s largest LEGO shop
LEGOLAND was originally conceived because the factory
in Billund received thousands of visitors every year, who
were keen to learn about the LEGO product.
Since the first day, there has been a LEGO shop in
LEGOLAND. Today visitors can pay a visit to the worlds
largest LEGO shop in the park. The shop area exceeds
1,000 m2.
In the shop visitors can buy almost the entire LEGO range
and a number of LEGOLAND products that are available
only here, e.g. knight’s swords and princess outfits. You
can also build your own Mini-figure – a unique LEGO
figure of your very own to take home as a souvenir.
The LEGO shop gives visitors the chance to buy a souve-
nir so that they can relive the fun and fairytale at home.
LEGOLAND also has a large children’s wear shop, LEGO
Kids Wear, which also stocks Northern Europe’s biggest
selection of LEGO WEAR, and a store with a large selec-
tion of adult clothing.
Visitors will also find a number of other shops in the park
selling LEGO products adapted to a specific theme, e.g.
Castle Shop in the KNIGHTS’ KINGDOM.
Facts about LEGO Shop
• The selection includes 1,400 separate LEGO items
• The shop covers an area of more than 1,000 m2
