SCCC Video Meeting
From Peter Daley - Club Video Meeting

I have created a Talky SCCC test chat room. Please use this test to hone your skills
before joining the proper SCCC Talky chat.
You can try the test chat room by clicking this link. https://talky.io/sccctestchat?
password=981
This will take you into the SCCC test chat room. The password to access the secure
chat room is part of the link.
Every time you click on the link a Talky opening setup page will open. To the middle
right of this Talky web page you will see Speakers, Camera, and Microphone. Use the
grey downward pointing arrow button to the right of each selection box to select
which Speakers, Camera, and Microphone to use. Each of these items listed should
be selected, and in the pop up box that appears in your web browser click "Allow".
This will allow your web browser to make use of these devices.
After doing this, you can test if your speakers are working by clicking on - "Test
Speaker".
Also, if your camera is working, you will see your image in the camera view.
A sound level meter will appear below the Microphone item once it is on and
working. The Microphone level should be around a third to half way when you speak.
If not, you will need to adjust the microphone level in your computer or device sound
settings.
After you have done all the above just click the big blue "Join Call" button.
Once entering the chat room experiment with all the settings. If you make a mistake
or get lost, hang up or leave, by simply clicking the phone symbol above your image
in the camera view, on the left. Then come back to this Bulletin item and click the
link to join the test chat room again.
If you can not get the microphone or video working, you can still join the chat, and
use the text chat function. It is located at bottom right of the chat room screen. You
may need to scroll down the chat room page to see and access the chat function.
As we do not know how many members are interested in joining the weekly Club
chat sessions, please indicate your interest by sending an email to this address.
meetingopeningsurvey@sccc.org.au
If a large number of members are interested, we will divide the members into
different groups and meeting times. If we do not do this there may be insufficient
internet bandwidth for everyone who joins the video chat session.
After you send in your interest to join, you will receive an email from
meetingopeningsurvey@sccc.org.au with the link to the official SCCC chat room. So
to join the main chat room, do not use the SCCC test chat link provided above, as it is
only set up for training purposes. We need everyone interested to try the test chat
room first. This is so we do not need to spend a lot of time getting everyone up to
speed on how it all works.
There will be Q and A, and other technical subjects discussed in the Club Talky chat
sessions. We will refine these session over time. If you are having difficulty getting
Talky working. meetingopeningsurvey@sccc.org.au

Quickly Zoom In and Out Using the Mouse Wheel – Additional Information
The item below was published in the Weekly Bulletin of 3 Aug 20. It has been found
that part of the information is now incorrect for users of Mozilla Thunderbird Version
78.1.1. Since updating to this version of Thunderbird the scroll wheel of the mouse
will no longer function to zoom in and out in the body of an e mail. This has been
confirmed to me by another Club member.
“Today's mice come with a centre wheel between the two buttons. Rolling the wheel
up and down will usually move the current content up and down, respectively. So it's
an easy way to scroll up and down through the screen viewing area.
The wheel also provides a quick alternative to the Zoom control. (Interesting, there's
no keyboard shortcut for accessing the Zoom control.) To zoom in and out using the
mouse, hold down the [Ctrl] key while you turn the mouse wheel. Each click, up or
down, increases or decreases the zoom factor by 10%.
The draw back with this is that certain portions of a window do not respond to this
zoom function – for example with an e mail on the screen the wheel zoom will work
only in the body of the e mail and not the heading portion.”

1. How Moto got its Mojo Back

Moto, short for Motorola Mobility has been plotting a safe course since its US$2.91
billion acquisition from Google by Lenovo in late 2014. Its now time to ramp that up,
aiming for a coveted top-five spot as a global smartphone maker.
Lenovo may be the world’s largest P.C. maker (and so much more), but it is not so
well known for its phones. In fact, Lenovo recently decided to focus all its
smartphone efforts into the Motorola, sorry Moto, brand.
And that is with good reason. Motorola is a Chicago-based, American brand with a
long heritage back to the 1930s. It earned its stripes with the legions of loyal military,
police and emergency services that relied on its bullet-proof (literally) walkie talkies.
The first words from the moon in 1969 used Motorola equipment.
The first mobile 1Kg brick, err, phone, in 1973 was a Motorola DynaTAC.
And Motorola’s first ‘consumer’ oriented phone – the RAZR flip phone sold 145
million between 2004-2007 – still the record for the most sales of a single model.
Moto – legends are made moving forward.
The above website reviews Motorola's phones over the years with illustrations.

Samsung Galaxy Note20 and Note20 Ultra 5G - We will deep dive review the
Samsung Galaxy Note20 and Note20 Ultra 5G soon but here is a quick overview of
the technology. And to be clear, there is no better phone!
What is a Samsung Galaxy Note20 and Note20 Ultra 5G? In the simplest terms, these
are Samsung’s uber flagship models replete with the new S Pen. They have it all.
The above website gives the review with specifications and two videos, one of which
is about the Galaxy Buds Live.

3. Google Pixel 4a – a Bit More than a Refresh

As Google Pixel devotees know, Google introduces a ‘full’ version later in the year
and a mid-year ‘a’ version. So now we have the Google Pixel 4, 4XL and 4a – there
will be no 4a/XL but a 4a 5G and 5, 5G coming soon.
I want to take a step back to the philosophy behind the Pixel 4a because, in no way
wishing to be harsh, it really should not exist in the cut-throat smartphone world. I
mean if mega-electronics giants like Sony can’t make smartphones work who can?
The Pixel 4a is everything that Google believes a ‘reference’ Android smartphone
should be. It is their baby that fortunately, not only a mother could love. In its way, it
is quite an amazing device.
Google claims to be serious about its Pixel range (and indeed all Google hardware)
yet seems to be content with fairly narrow distribution channels. It is kind of if you
want a Pixel you will find it.
The above website contains the specifications but a review is not included as the
phone has not been seen yet. ]

Change the Text Cursor Indicator Thickness in Windows 10
At times it is not easy to see where the blinking cursor indicator is in a full page of
text if it is a very thin line. It is possible to increase the thickness of the blinking
cursor so it is more vise-able.
Open the control panel
    1. Go to Ease of access
    2. Make things on screen easier to use
    3. Set the thickness of the blinking cursor (see a preview of the thickness chosen)
(Note – Ease of Access may also be reached through PC settings from the start menu
and opening Ease of Access from there)
See the short video to see how this is done at - https://www.youtube.com/watch?
v=o2vZoLcvv6Q)
The control panel on your Windows computer may look different to that shown in the
video. This may be due to the update that Windows 10 is up to.

    Google Pixel Buds Review
(https://www.engadget.com/google-pixel-buds-review-2020-160030712.html)
To get started with a phone that’s running Android 6.0 and up, all you have to do is
flip open the Pixel Buds case. Similar to the fast pairing Apple offers with AirPods,
the Pixel Buds will automatically connect to your device, even if you’re doing so for
the first time. The connection notification will inform you of the current battery levels
for both earbuds individually and the case -- much like iOS does, though it shows one
figure for both AirPods.
                     Pros Cons
Very comfortable Adaptive Sound is work-in-progress
Reliable touch controls No ANC
Solid audio Battery Life
Affordable price Np audio customization
Improved Assistant performance
Summary
Google’s updated Pixel Buds are a revelation compared to the previous model. Not
only are they true wireless now, but the smart features are reliable, the touch controls
are easy to master and comfort is top-notch. Battery life is on par with Apple’s
AirPods, but it’s well below average in 2020. Still, at $179, Google has a powerful set
of earbuds for the Android faithful that really shine when paired with a Pixel phone.

Google's Find My Device App Can Now Locate Pixel Buds
(https://www.engadget.com/googles-find-my-device-app-pixel-buds-
073528459.html)
Second-gen Pixel Buds owners can now use Find my Device to look for their pair in
case they ever get lost. According to 9to5Google, users have started seeing the Pixel
Buds they connected to their account on the Find my Device app on Android and the
web. So long as they’re logged in, they’ll be able to see the model of the device it
was “last seen connected to,” along with the time and date. That information is
displayed against a map with a pinned location of the pair.
The publication first spotted the Find my Device integration during an APK tear
down in June. While it seems to have started making its way to users, Pixel Buds
won’t show up in Search when doing the “find device” query yet. The Buds’ last
connection information won’t show up in the “Find device” menu in the Pixel Buds
app either, at least for now.
When Google released the updated Pixel Buds earlier this year, we were impressed
with the true wireless headset’s intuitive touch controls, comfort and smart features. It
cost $179 at launch in the US, but it has since been available in more countries and in
more colors. Some users reported having Bluetooth issues that cut out audio while the
buds are in use, but Google acknowledged the problem and promised a software fix.
