Once again we find ourselves confronted with violence and war, it seems we have an
inbuilt urge to destroy and dominate others. If only all the creativity, technology, money
and organisational ability were used to solve issues which people deal with, rather than
on how to destroy other people with ever increasing efficiency. Somehow eye-watering
amounts of money can be found for airplanes and ships and yet services essential to
human well-being are cut.
Before I am accused of being a snowflake, I understand the practicalities of defending
one’s sovereignty, I admire those who enter armed conflict with courage, I have no
doubt it is necessary from time to time to send our youth into harm’s way to defend the
rest of us. However, there is a sigh of resignation from deep in my soul which voices
my sadness that it is necessary.
Watching the news over the last couple of days took me back to memories of the cold
war. I was just one of hundreds of thousands of young men and women who fought one
of many proxy wars between first world powers, in the third world. Where are we left as
Christians as we rush towards the tipping point of open conflict between Russia and a
handful of western countries? What would our faith in Jesus Christ say to us when we
face this threat, and indeed many other threats to our health and well-being; the death of
a loved one, financial stress, an abusive partner, trauma, disease or injury?
Essentially, the Christian faith is predicated on a set of beliefs we ascribe to, and those
beliefs shape how we live out our lives. We may not be able to change what other
people do, and if you can you need to speak God’s heart, but we can watch our own
hearts. Nowhere in the Bible is faith in Jesus promoted as an inoculation against the
evils of the world. In fact, the Bible describes how evil seems to flourish while
righteousness is in short supply. The disciples themselves suffered, many dying horrific
deaths.
What we are called to as Christians is to hold to our faith, and the living out of that
faith, when we are feeling uncertain, fearful, frustrated and sad. We are called to offer
strength and hope and justice and fairness and compassion and forgiveness wherever we
are, to be light in a world which seems to be overshadowed with darkness.
God bless as you seek to be a light for Christ where you are.

Email: rectorstroudwater@gmail.comWe are very pleased to let you know that we are establishing a new ministry in our
Team and the Stroud area. It’s called The Filling Station and is for anyone at all who
is looking for a time of refreshing and filling up, we would be really happy if you
would bring friends who aren’t in church yet. It will be on the first Tuesday of
every month at Standish Village Hall, starting at 7pm, and going no longer than
8:30pm. The evening will consist of a time of worship, a teaching from some great
speakers and an opportunity to receive prayer ministry. We would love to see you
there. Want to know more?
Phone Rev Steve Harrison on 07466858975 or email rectorstroudwater@gmail.com.
