During 1854 – 1874, the Eastern Railways had their Calcutta
Station and ticket reservation room at the Armenian Ghat and
the fare covered the ferry service to the station on the opposite
bank. Interestingly, it is from this counter at Armenian Ghat
that the passengers had to buy train tickets, not just for crossing
the Ganges on Railway-owned steamers but also to reach
their desired destinations via the railways from Howrah. This
arrangement continued until the construction of the Howrah
Pontoon Bridge was completed in 1874.
