Wednesday February 20 War site of 1812: The War of 1812 was fought between the United States and Britain between 1812 and 1815. The causes of the war were many. British finally evacuated St. Marys after the ratification of the trea- ty on February 17, 1815. Kings Bay Submarine Base: The Submarine Base is the U.S. Atlantic Fleet’s home port for U.S. Navy Fleet ballistic missile nuclear submarines armed with Trident missile nuclear weapons. This submarine base covers about 16,000 acres (6,400 hectares) of land, of which 4,000 acres (1,600 hectares) are pro- tected wetlands. Tabby Ruins: McIntosh Sugarworks, aka Tabby Ruins, was built in the late 1820s by John Houstoun McIn- tosh. They are a significant example of tabby architecture and represent an industrial component of southeastern plantation agriculture. McIntosh began planting in Camden County, Georgia after the War of 1812. Crooked River State Park: The park’s nature trail winds through forest and salt marsh, and hikers may see gopher tortoises, fiddler crabs, herons and other birds. Announcements:
• Everyone will depart the ferry at Sea Camp, Dungeness Dock is closed due to hurricane damage. The
walk to the ruins from Sea Camp is ~1 mile.
• BRAG will bring some snacks and water and place a cooler at Sea Camp.
• Today is a long day, please bring enough clothes to stay warm and food to eat.
• Bring your camera, Cumberland Island is beautiful! Also get a map from the visitors center.
Biking: Only 15 bikes are allowed on the Ferry (additional $10 fee). We would highly discourage roadbikes
or skinny tires on the island as there are no paved roads and sandy conditions. If you have a mountain
bike or hybrid with beefy tires then you may bring your bike. Beach cruiser bikes are available for rent for
$16 on the island, first come first serve, and they are in high demand. Move quickly but carefully off the
ferry if you want to rent a bike.
Dungeness Ruins: Revolutionary War Hero General Nathanael Greene purchased land on Cumberland
Island in 1783. Following his death, his widow Catherine Greene, constructed a four-story tabby home that
she named Dungeness. Thomas Carnegie and his wife Lucy began building another Dungeness on the
original foundation in 1884. The Carnegie’s Dungeness burned in 1959 and today only the ruins remain.
17Thursday February 21 Hiking: A total of 50 miles of hiking trails meander through maritime forests, interior wetlands, historic districts, marsh ecosystems, and the beautiful beaches. Trails are accessible only by foot. Traveling north on the dirt shell road known as Grande Avenue you travel through the heart of the island under a draping canopy of live oaks, across forest floors packed with palmetto, through tall stands of stately pines, over open fields, near tidal creeks, fresh water wetlands and lakes. It also takes you near Plum Orchard Man- sion, and it loops through the Settlement at the north end of Cumberland Island including the site of the First African Baptist Church. Plum Orchard: Built in 1898, Plum Orchard is an 20k sqft, Georgian Revival mansion. Built by Lucy Car- negie for her son, George and his wife, Margaret Thaw. It is almost 8 miles from the Sea Camp dock to visit Plum Orchard. Access is by foot or bicycle and is open Thursday 9am -12pm and 1pm - 4pm. The free tours are offered on the hour and last 45 minutes. Ask at the Sea Camp Ranger Station for more info. Please do not attempt to reach on foot, it is ~16 miles round trip. Okefenokee Swamp: The Okefenokee is the largest “blackwater” swamp in North America, 438,000-
acre. Although folklore and many references state that the word, Okefenokee, is a Native American word,
meaning,”land of trembling earth,”. Okefenokee is famous for its amphibians and reptiles such as toads,
frogs, turtles, lizards, snakes, and an abundance of American alligators. It is also a critical habitat for the
Florida black bear.
Swamp Island Drive: is an 8-mile round trip self-guided road. There are numerous trail heads along the
way accessing miles of walking trails. You can go by car or, better yet, by bicycle. It’s an easy pedal – no
hills! The main highlights on this drive are the Chesser Island Homestead, and the boardwalk and obser-
vation tower.
Boardwalk: The boardwalk is ¾ of a mile long and runs through a dense tangle of bay swamp and open
prairie. It has sheltered rest stops along the way and ends at the 50-ft. Owls Roost observation tower with
a sweeping view across the watery expanse of Chesser Prairie’s Seagrove Lake.
The Chesser Island Homestead: is an historic swamp family home originally built in 1927. It’s a great way
to see how swamp pioneers lived during those times. A Refuge volunteer is often stationed there to talk
about the house, show visitors inside and answer questions. Several outbuildings surround the home dis-
playing old tools, livestock pens, and equipment for cane syrup production. The Homestead is staffed by
volunteers and is not always open for the public to get inside but you can always view it from the outside.

31Saturday February 23 St. Simons Island: Three years after founding Georgia in 1733, Gen. James Edward Oglethorpe estab- lished Fort Frederica to defend the fledgling colony against Spanish attack from Florida. Georgia’s fate was decided in 1742 when Spanish and British forces clashed on St. Simons Island. Fort Frederica’s troops defeated the Spanish, ensuring Georgia’s future as a British colony. About 630 British troops were sta- tioned at the fort. A town of up to 500 colonial residents had grown up outside the fort .Today, the arche- ological remnants of Frederica are protected by the National Park Service. Christ Church: one of the oldest churches in Georgia, was founded on St. Simons Island nearly 70 years after the island was first settled by English colonists. Worship has been continuous since 1736 in Christ Church Parish, established by English colonists at Frederica under General James Oglethorpe. Battle of Bloody Marsh Site: On July 7, 1742, English and Spanish forces skirmished on St. Simons Island in an encounter later known as the Battle of Bloody Marsh. This event was the only Spanish attempt to invade Georgia during the War of Jenkins’ Ear, and it resulted in a significant English victory. The King and Prince Club: Opened as a seaside dance club in 1935 and was immediately praised for its modern features and magnificent ocean views. During World War II, the hotel served as a naval coast-watching and training facility, reopening in 1947 to resume its popularity as a favorite island resort with its gracious Mediterranean architecture.
