From the Editor’s Desk
A
nother Annual meeting has come and gone and has reminded us that change at the CFAA and the fire alarm
industry is one of the most significant ongoing challenges for the future. Not only leadership changes that happen
as a matter of course in any organization, but the perpetual change in technology and regulations within the
industry. In the event you were not able to attend the meeting, President Simon Crosby provides us with an excellent
summary of the proceedings.
John MacDonald is a regular contributor to the Journal and in this issue, he highlights how CFAA continues to respond
to these dynamic changes thanks to the work of staff and so many volunteers. He reminds us that we are only as good as
the members who step up to volunteer their time and ideas to make us better. John certainly leads by example.
We mentioned the Grenfell fire in London briefly in our last issue, but in an interesting article contributed by Rick
Murray and Drew Hutcheson, they look at the aftermath of the fire and its implications for fire safety and fire alarm
technicians. At first blush, one wonders how something like this can happen but upon further examination, it seems
likely a myriad of errors contributed to the tragedy. Most concerning might be the implications of taking short cuts to
save on costs or to reduce regulations that may seem onerous, but do serve a purpose.
Of course, we have even further evidence of how pervasive fire tragedies are in our lives as we have witnessed a massive
slew of fires this summer in British Columbia. As always, preventing fires not only transcends a professional obligation,
but has significant economic impacts, to say nothing of the importance of saving lives.
On a less serious note, we hope you are having a safe and enjoyable summer during Canada’s 150th anniversary.

Assemblée annuelle qui vient de se terminer nous rappelle que le changement au sein de l’ACAI et de
l’industrie de l’alarme incendie est l’un des plus importants défis à relever dans les années à venir. Il
ne s’agit pas seulement des changements au niveau du leadership d’une organisation, mais aussi des
changements perpétuels visant la technologie et la réglementation dans l’industrie. Si vous n’avez pas été en
mesure d’assister à l’Assemblée, le président, Simon Crosby, propose un excellent résumé des séances.
Contributeur régulier de la revue, John MacDonald explique dans ce numéro comment l’ACAI continue de
réagir à ces changements grâce aux efforts du personnel et de nombreux bénévoles. Il nous rappelle que notre
succès dépend des membres qui consacrent leur temps et présentent leurs idées pour améliorer nos activités.

tragédies liées aux incendies envahissent nos vies. Comme toujours, la prévention des incendies va bien au-
delà d’une simple obligation professionnelle; elle a aussi d’importantes retombées économiques, sans compter
l’importance de sauver des vies.
Sur une note plus plaisante, en ce 150e anniversaire du Canada, nous espérons que vous profitez de l’été en toute
sécurité.
