DERBY CITY COUNCIL’S ADULT LEARNING SERVICE

WELCOME
Welcome to Derby City Council Adult Learning Service
Autumn 2019 learning programme. The Adult Learning
Service provides high quality teaching and learning for a
wide range of learners every year, so we are confident
that with the support of our tutors and support staff, you
will be successful in achieving your goals.

Derby City Council supports lifelong learning and is
committed to raising achievement and skills, and
providing learning opportunities for all Derby residents.

If this is your first step back into learning, we hope that
it is just the beginning of a long and successful journey,
which will bring you new skills, interests and
qualifications. It can be hard to join a class after a long
period away from learning. We will try to help and
support all our learners as much as possible. Please talk
to your tutor if there is anything we can do to help. If
you have already attended some of our classes, we hope
that you will enjoy your new course and continue to
learn new skills.

Courses tend to fill up quickly, so make sure to book your
place as early as possible. If you can’t find what you’re
looking for, please contact our Learner Helpline team.

We hope your learning experience will be exciting and
enjoyable.

HOW TO JOIN A COURSE

ENROLLING ON A COURSE
Our enrolment process for 2019/20 has changed; learners can enrol in person at any of our 4
centres for any of our courses. To be eligible to enrol you will need to be 19 or over on 31st
August 2019.
As a minimum you will need to bring with you one form of ID from the list below:
        Passport  Bank/Credit/Debit card
 Driving Licence  Other – Gold Card
 ID card or other National ID  Other – Photo staff ID
 NI card  Other – Armed Forces Service ID

Whilst we introduce our new enrolment system we are not able to offer online or telephone
enrolments, as we need to be able to record the physical ID we have seen for each learner.

FUNDING
Most of our courses are fully funded (or subsidised) through the
Education & Skills Funding Agency (ESFA) and European Social
Fund (ESF) through the Adult Education Budget (AEB).
It is important that you fill in any forms fully and accurately, as
these prove how many learners we have and that our courses are
making a difference to the people in Derby.
If you are unemployed or on a lower wage (Earning less than
£16,009.50 per year/£308 per week) you may be eligible for a
fee reduction or free courses, please bring evidence of your
benefits and income with you (you will need the last 3 months
evidence). Benefit evidence should be one of the following:
    Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA)
 Universal Credit (evidence to show you earn less than £308 per week)
    Employment Support Allowance (ESA)
 Income Support, Council Tax Benefit or Housing Benefit
    Pension Guarantee Credit

MONITORING INFORMATION
Some of the information we need to collect for enrolment allows us to monitor our
participation for different learner groups. This is to ensure our Service is accessible to all and
helps us to promote our Service to under represented learner groups. We also use this
information to monitor the quality and success of our programmes.

UNIQUE LEARNER NUMBERS (ULN)
When you enrol on a course with us, as part of the funding requirements we have to register
you with the Learning Records Service (LRS) to generate a Unique Learner Number (ULN) for
you. The ULN will stay with you for life and is the educational equivalent of your National
Insurance Number.

Your Personal Learner Record (PLR) is a life-long record of the qualifications and skills you
have achieved and is held by the national LRS.
