Ballymahon is Classified as a Tier 4 settlement within the Settlement Hierarchy
outlined in the Longford County Development Plan (2015-2021). This is based on the
population increase seen in the area from 816 in 1991 to 2,674 in 2016.
Ballymahon is a ‘Local Service Town’ with Ballymahon performing important local
level, residential, retailing, social and leisure functions and providing appropriate
local services to a wider rural hinterland.
