All about our courses Welcome to our course guide especially for adults over the age of 19 with learning difficulties and disabilities. All the classes are part-time. Please have a good look through before you enrol and decide on your preferred choices. All courses will include some online learning to help you improve your digital skills but don’t worry, we will help you build your skills gradually. Booking your place on a course Due to the need for social distancing, we are not holding Open Days this year. We want to help you enrol safely on your course(s) without having to come into a centre. Social distancing will also mean that we may have fewer learners in each class. Once you have chosen a course, please complete the online Course Request Form available at moodle.hae- acl.ac.uk listing your courses in order of preference. We will do our best to place you in your preferred course. There may be a limit to the number of courses you can do to make sure there is room for everyone. You might want to ask your parents/carers for help to fill in the form. The form will then come to us automatically and one of our team will contact you to discuss your choices and help you to enrol and pay for your course(s). All courses are subject to demand. Class rules We expect you to attend every class and call one of our centres if you cannot come. Two weeks absence could mean you lose your place on the course. However if you are sick, please telephone the centre where your course is being held. Please come on time; we don’t want you to miss anything. On your first day, we will take your photograph and give you a badge with your name on it. Please wear it whenever you come to one of our centres, so we can see it’s you. As we get to know you, we will provide support where you need it. We will continue to use online learning this year. Please ask your parent and carers to help you practise this at home. 4 • Courses for Adults with Learning Disabilities 2021/22
Staying safe Here are some tips to keep yourself safe. Be kind to people and expect them to be nice to you. If they are being mean or bullying you, walk away and ask someone for help. Don’t talk to strangers on the internet. If someone is mean to you on the internet, stop talking to them and tell someone you trust. Take good care of your money. No one should take your money from you or ask you to spend it on them. Take good care of your phone and don’t tell strangers where you live or give your keys to anyone. Remember to always wear your badge when you are with us. We want you to enjoy your time here and feel safe. If you don’t for any reason, please tell us. Meet Daniel Daniel enrolled on the Pre-Employment Workshop (PEW) as he wanted to gain an understanding of employability skills and become more independent. During the programme, and through discussion, role play and other activities, he explored different aspects of preparing for employment. He found the course extremely useful and is keen to progress further. As a part of the PEW course, Daniel undertook work experience at Brookfield Adult Learning Centre, where he helped staff in different areas of their work. He also found looking for voluntary jobs online useful. He considered applying for a part-time job at McDonald’s in South Harrow, as that looked fascinating to him. Daniel also enjoyed practicing for and attending an interview which made him feel more confident. All courses will include online learning. Parents/carers please assist our learners to access this at home. In the future, Daniel would like to get a job and be more independent. He thinks he needs to do some more courses to prepare for this, and the new follow up course, Getting Work Ready, sounds interesting to him. Courses for Adults with Learning Disabilities 2021/22 • 35
