COVID-19 DRILLS FOR INDIVIDUALS - Stay safe. Stay sharp - Alive & Kicking
Introduction

         ABOUT THIS COVID-19 MANUAL
FIFA and the World Health Organization (WHO) have teamed up
to combat the coronavirus (COVID-19) by calling on all people
around the world to follow five key steps to stop the spread of
         the disease.
The 'Pass the message to kick out coronavirus' campaign
promotes five key steps for people to follow to protect their
health in line with WHO guidance, focused on hand washing,
coughing etiquette, not touching your face, physical distance
and staying home if feeling unwell.
To support the delivery of this message, Alive and Kicking have
utilised their expert health education experience to develop five
sports based learning activities that can be done as an individual
and with minimum equipment. Each activity focus on one of the
         five steps.

DELIVERY MODEL

Each activity is delivered in the same way. First you run the sport element of
the activity without any mention of the health message. Once the participant
understands how the activity works, the health education message can be
shared and the game then played again. The activity then ends with a debrief
on the session.

DRILL 1 - HANDS
KEEP YOUR HANDS CLEAN TOPIC: BALL MANIPULATION

  ORGANISATION
   • Set up a small square area with an
           item (cone/household item) in each
corner and then one item in the
           middle of the square.
   • Start with a ball (or something you
can kick) in the middle of the
           square.

  FOOTBALL
      • From the middle of the square,
dribble out to one of the corner
items, perform a turn and dribble
            back to the middle item.
      • When you return to the middle
item, stop the ball and do 20 toe
taps. While doing the toe taps
            rub your hands together.
      • As soon as you have completed
20 toes taps, take the ball to
            another corner item and repeat
            the process.

          CHALLENGE

How many times can you complete a round of 20 toe taps in two minutes?

  HEALTH ACTIVITY
  • Taking the ball to a corner item represents doing an everyday activity (going to the shops,
             going for a walk etc).
  • When you return from that activity you should wash your hands. This is represented by doing
20 toe taps and rubbing your hands together?
  • Remember to play again to reinforce the health message.

                             KEY MESSAGE
Frequent washing with soap and water, or with an alcohol-
based hand solution, kills viruses that may be on your
hands. It is simple, but it is very important.

DRILL 2 - ELBOW
USE YOUR ELBOW TO STOP THE SPREAD TOPIC: BALL MANIPULATION

 ORGANISATION
  • Set up some items (cones/
household items) in a zig zag
          formation
  • Start with a ball (or something you
can kick) at one end of the zig zag.

 FOOTBALL
     • From one end of the zig zag,
dribble the ball to the nearest
          item and perform a turn.
Accelerate away from the turn to
the next item and repeat the
          process.
     • Use your arm to point where you
are going next after the turn. Do
this by covering your nose and
mouth with your inner elbow and
point with your finger to the next
item you have to dribble to.
     • Dribble to the end of the zig zag,
          turn and come back again.

         CHALLENGE

How many times can you complete a full zig zag in two minutes?

 HEALTH ACTIVITY
 • Approaching a cone before you turn represents being about to sneeze or cough.
 • As you turn, this represents sneezing or coughing, but your inner elbow blocks the sneeze or
             cough.
 • Remember to play again to reinforce the health message.

                           KEY MESSAGE
Cover your nose or mouth with a bent elbow when you
sneeze or cough. This will protect the people around you
from contracting viruses, such as cold, flu and
                           coronavirus.

DRILL 3 - FACE
AVOID TOUCHING YOUR FACE TOPIC: BALL MANIPULATION

    ORGANISATION
    • Set up some items (cones/
household items) in the shape of a
          face. Include features such as
          eyes, ears and nose.
    • Start with a ball (or something you
can kick) at the bottom of the face.
    •
    FOOTBALL
    • From the bottom of the face,
dribble to the top of the face
and then back again without the
ball touching any of the items.
    • Repeat the process, scoring a
point for every top to bottom set.
If you touch an item with the ball
           your score returns to zero.

    CHALLENGE
How many points can you score in two minutes.

HEALTH ACTIVITY
• As mentioned, each item represents a feature of the face – a mouth, ear, eye, nose, chin,
           eyebrow etc.
• If the ball touches an item, this represents touching our face with our hands.
• The score returning to zero represents the risks we might put ourselves in by touching our faces.
• Remember to play again to reinforce the health message.

                              KEY MESSAGE
Hands touch too many surfaces and can quickly pick up
viruses. Once contaminated, hands can transfer the virus
to your face, from where the virus can move inside your
                              body, making you feel unwell.

DRILL 4 - DISTANCE
KEEP A SAFE DISTANCE TOPIC: BALL MANIPULATION

ORGANISATION
• Set up a rectangle with an item
        (cone/household item) in middle of
        the rectangle.
• Start with a ball (or something you
can kick) at one end of the
        rectangle.

FOOTBALL
    • Dribble the ball toward the item
in the middle, as you approach,
        change direction to go around
        the cone at a distance.
    • Accelerate away from the cone
to the other side of the rectangle.
    • At the end of the rectangle,
perform a turn and repeat the
        process.

    CHALLENGE

How many times can you move around the cone in two minutes?

HEALTH ACTIVITY
• The cone in the middle represents a member of the public.
• When you pass them with the ball, the safe distance between you and the cone represent
  social distancing.
• Remember to play again to reinforce the health message.

                            KEY MESSAGE
By maintaining such social distancing, you are helping to
avoid breathing in any droplets from someone who
sneezes or coughs in close proximity.

     rectangle.
•
FOOTBALL
• Pass the ball slowly through the

around the outside of the square
      and receive the ball.
• Once you have received and
stopped the ball, pass it to the
next side of the square and
      repeat the process.
• If you miss control the ball, stop
the game, go to the middle of
the square and perform 20 step
      overs. Once complete, return to
      the game and continue.

    CHALLENGE
How many times can you pass and receive the ball yourself in two minutes?

HEALTH ACTIVITY
• Miss controlling the ball represents feeling unwell.
• Taking the ball to the middle of the square and performing 20 step overs represents
     staying at home to recover.
• Remember to play again to reinforce the health message.

                         KEY MESSAGE
