Proudly Family owned since 1963 when Peter Evert purchased the Winton Pharmacy from
Vince Coleman. In 2007, Kieran Ludwick, Peter’s Daughter, then took over the business.
With extensive renovations to the old pharmacy completed, Kieran and her team have created
a very modern and inviting pharmacy that offers a professional and discrete service to all their
customers.

Along with all pharmaceutical goods that are either in stock
or can be ordered in upon request.
Winton Pharmacy stocks personal and general household
goods, cosmetics, giftware, sunglasses, glasses, photo

The Winton Pharmacy has always been and continues to be a
proud supporter of all things Winton – from selling weekly
tickets from clubs and committees to supporting local
                                 sporting teams.
Winton Pharmacy has been doing it - since 1963.

Call in and say hello to Kieran and her friendly team! Have a browse around and whilst there,

DID YOU KNOW? The Winton Tourist Promotion
Association (W.T.P.A.) (Now known as Winton Business
& Tourism Association) was formed in October 1967,
and because of the connection to Banjo Paterson and
Waltzing Matilda, it was a natural concept to look at
ways to encourage the writing of traditional Australian
verse that was made so popular by A.B. "Banjo"
Paterson, Henry Lawson etc. which is so much a part of
                                     our Australian heritage.

At that time, Winton had a number of residents writing
and/or interested in Australian Bush Poetry. In 1970,
led by Bruce Simpson, these poets wrote and produced
"Matilda Matilda", a local booklet commemorating the
75th anniversary of A.B. 'Banjo' Paterson's writing of
"Waltzing Matilda" in the Winton district. This
booklet proved so popular, that the W.T.P.A. decided
to run an annual national competition for written
Australian Bush Verse, with the prize to be a
                                     Silver Swaggie.

Miss Daphne Mayo, a famous Australian sculptress who had completed the famous
fibre-cast swagman for the Winton Shire in 1959, was approached to create a swagman
statuette to be used as a trophy. In 1971, Miss Mayo was given permission to proceed
with the statuette, but because of the high cost of silver, the swagman was cast in
bronze instead, and a tradition was born.

Our most sincere thanks must go to Bruce Forbes Simpson, and his secretary, local bush poet
Clover Nolan, for their dedication - not only at the beginning in 1972 - but for some years
following during the rapid expansion of interest in what became known world-wide as the
Bronze Swagman Award. This year, 2022 sees the competition celebrating 51 years.

Countless volunteers over the 51 years have donated their time and effort without thought of
remuneration and recognition to ensure that the Bronze Swagman award achieved this
anniversary......

The competition is open to all with entries closing on 30 th April 2022.
Details and entry forms can be found at www.bronzeswagman.weebly.com

90 YEARS AGO, ON THIS DAY 5TH APRIL 1932

Legendary champion thoroughbred racehorse
Phar Lap died —
Phar Lap (4 October 1926 – 5 April 1932) was a
champion Thoroughbred racehorse whose
achievements captured the Australian public's
imagination during the early years of the Great
Depression.
Foaled in New Zealand, he was trained and
raced in Australia by Harry Telford.
Phar Lap dominated Australian racing during a
distinguished career, winning a Melbourne
Cup, two Cox Plates, an AJC Derby, and 19
other weight for age races.
He then won the Agua Caliente Handicap in
Tijuana, Mexico, in track-record time in his
final race. After a sudden and mysterious
illness, Phar Lap died in 1932 in Atherton,
California.
At the time, he was the third highest stakes-
winner in the world.
Early on 5 April 1932, the horse's strapper for
the North American visit, Tommy Woodcock,
found him in severe pain and with a high
temperature.
Within a few hours, Phar Lap haemorrhaged to
death. An autopsy revealed that the horse's stomach and intestines were inflamed, leading
many to believe the horse had been deliberately poisoned.
There have been alternative theories, including accidental poisoning from lead insecticide and
a stomach condition.
It was not until the 1980’s that the infection could be formally identified.
In 2000, equine specialists studying the two necropsies concluded that Phar Lap probably died
of duodenitis-proximal jejunitis, an acute bacterial gastroenteritis.
In 2006, Australian Synchrotron Research scientists said it was almost certain Phar Lap was
poisoned with a large single dose of arsenic in the hours before he died, perhaps supporting
the theory that Phar Lap was killed on the orders of US gangsters, who feared the Melbourne
Cup-winning champion would inflict big losses on their illegal bookmakers.
No real evidence of involvement by a criminal element exists.
