                            Physical Development and the EYFS

Physical development is one of the three prime areas within the Early Years Foundation Stage
                                              (EYFS).

The Department of Health (2019) recommends at least three hours of physical activity across
the day for children in the early years. Every movement counts.
You will explore how you don’t need to plan extra activities, but just make the most of
everyday opportunities. Participants will be encouraged to share practical physical activity
ideas, including babies and outdoor play for children under 5.

Developing young children’s engagement and learning through Beach School

The United Kingdom has approximately 17,819.88 km of coastline and beaches are an amazing
resource for children to learn from. Utilising beaches for developing knowledge, skills and
understanding across the curriculum also enables children to relax and has a positive effect on
                                       their mental wellbeing.

Many practitioners are developing their Forest School approach but now there is an alternative
which utilises or local beaches to provide children with experiences that encourage an
appreciation, awareness and knowledge of the natural environment. It gives children the
opportunity to understand how to self-assess risks and keep themselves and others safe, explore,
experiment and investigate all areas of the curriculum and to understand the importance of the
beach environment and the need for conservation.

This session will be held on Ainsdale beach (Southport). We will discuss the principles of Beach
School and associated Health and Safety requirements as well as approaches to learning and
development across the areas of learning.

                                            Geometry

Geometry (previously Shape and Space in the National Curriculum) is a difficult area for
children due to the extensive language and the fact that shapes often have different names
                                       for the same shape.

This session will focus on practitioner subject knowledge and the impact of this on provision
across EYFS and Key Stage 1. Names of shapes, properties of shapes, misconceptions and
transformations of shape will all be considered

Developing young children’s engagement and learning through Beach School

Many practitioners are developing their Forest School approach but now there is an
alternative which utilises or local beaches to provide children with experiences that
encourage an appreciation, awareness and knowledge of the natural environment. It gives
children the opportunity to understand how to self-assess risks and keep themselves and
others safe, explore, experiment and investigate all areas of the curriculum and to
understand the importance of the beach environment and the need for conservation.

This session will be held on Ainsdale beach (Southport). We will discuss the principles of Beach
School and associated Health and Safety requirements as well as approaches to learning
and development across the areas of learning.

                                        Phonics Outdoors

This session is designed to support practitioners/teachers with contextualising phonics
‘application’. This session offers opportunities to explore how to support children with their
‘phonics’ understanding in context outdoors, as an enhancement to the discrete teaching of
   phonics.

Application, as in children’s understanding of reading and spelling is often best approached in
context and within meaningful activities. The outdoor environment offers many opportunities
for application and consolidation and to support children with reading.
