France-Belgium state border artificially divides the Flemish coastal dunes
since Peace of Nijmegen (1678) and Peace of Utrecht (1713) :
Sites have common origin, physical environment, history of human activities
and the same types of habitats
 Confronted with the same threats:
 Artificial interferences to natural aeolian and tidal dynamics
 Invasive alien species
 Encroachment with scrub and nitrophilious grasses
 Recreational pressure
 The same types of habitats and the same species on both sides of the
  border need common conservation objectives and management to reach a
  favourable state of conservation
 coordinated approach & management of cross-border sites = necessity

Ownership of coastal dunes both in French and Belgian Flanders:
privatised during French revolution and Napoleon (1793-1815)
=> numerous allotments during 20th Century
⇒ extremely fragmented ownership structure

In Belgian Flanders at start of the project:
   467 ha/2.200 ha private property

1st phase of work by SEVE – SOTRAVEER
(TERENVI) compagny from 4th january till 9th
march 2017 in dune Dewulf :

Mechanical and manual clearing of 11.2 ha to
restore the “white dune", “grey dune" and "humid
dune slack" which are natural habitats associated
with the open dune landscapes of the Dewulf dune:

 - mechanical clearing of 8.4 ha (5.9 ha + 2.5 ha of
complementary area)

 - manual clearing of 2.8 ha

  Action C.2. – Clearing of scrub to restore habitats that are associated with the
  open dune landscape

The 2nd phase of TERENVI works from 7th
November 2017 to 23rd March 2018:

Mechanical and manual clearing of 25.7 ha to
restore the “white dune", “grey dune" and "humid
dune slack" wich are natural habitats associated
with the following open dune landscapes:

11.1 ha for the Dewulf dune,
9.2 ha for the Perroquet dune,
5.4 ha for the Marchand dune

That is to say, a total on the 30/05/2018 of 49.5 ha
cleared out of the 65.1 ha forseen in the projects.

It should be noted that 12.4 ha (locality of the
Calvary of the dune du Perroquet) are conditioned
to the land acquisition of these parcels by the
Conservatoire du Littoral..
Action C3 : Establishment of grazing units (30 ha en Dune du
                  Perroquet et Dune Dewulf)

From January to March 2018, IDVERDE
compagny realized the new grazing
fenses for the managment of newly
cleared areas:

23.2 ha in the Dewulf dune,
6.6 ha in the Perroquet Dune

A total of 11 newly excavated ponds 5 in February 2017 in Dune Dewulf, 5 in February 2018 in
the dune of Parrot and 1 additional pond in dune Dewulf. Areas of 30 and 100 m2 with a depth
of between 1 and 2 m

                                    The new ponds have already been used as breeding grounds by Epidalea
                                    calamita.
                                    2 females of Triturus cristatus were observed in Pool 1 and Pool 2
                                    Bufo bufo, Pelophylax sp., Ichthyosaura alpestris and Lissotriton vulgaris,
                                    (larvae), Libellula depressa (eggs and larvae) and Sympetrum fonscolombii
Sympetrum fonscolombii (21/07/17)   (exuviae, neonate) also reproduced.
