F O O D F O R T H O U G H T: Daily nourishment for every adult and child should be a right, not a privilege. ANNUAL REPORT 2020
Ever y day more than 100,000 individuals living in Greater Hartford go to bed hungr y; 40,000 of these are children under the age of 18. For most of these people, finding healthy food is not only difficult, but near impossible. Chr ysalis Center’s food programs address the critical need for nourishment through innovative and hands-on approaches. N O O N E S H O U L D G O H U N G R Y.
Chrysalis Center’s Community Connections Programs focus on making healthy food available to all members of the community in a variety of ways. In recent years, we have developed five core programs that help to sustain individuals and families and end hunger by offering accessible fresh, healthy foods. These food programs include: Urban Roots, Homestead Farmers’ Market, Freshplace, Railway Gardens and our Food Forest Chrysalis Center’s Food Programs are Nourishing the Community
ANNUAL REPORT 2020 A MESSAGE FROM: Chrysalis Center Board Chair & CEO Dear Friends of Chrysalis Center, This past year has been a year of tremendous growth and opportunities, as well as a year of resilience and spirit! Chrysalis Center served 1,427 individuals and their families, including serving almost 100,000 healthy meals to those in need and placing more than 531 individuals and families into a home, many for the first time. We helped individuals throughout Connecticut become self-sufficient and able to live their best lives - from offering employment training skills, fresh food, and housing - to providing critical community supports to those struggling with mental illness or in recovery. For 45 years, Chrysalis Center has been a lifeline to thousands of individuals and families. Our mission, to provide support services to assist those in need to help transform their lives, is much more than a statement. It incorporates the philosophy of partnership and collaboration, in which clients have an active voice and role in their recovery and personal goals. As a multi-service, innovative non-profit organization, Chrysalis Center helps individuals overcome their struggles and live their best lives long beyond their time with us. This is only possible with collaboration. From our compassionate staff and dedicated board, to our caring volunteers and generous supporters – it takes a tremendous amount of support and dedication to ensure clients meet their goals and can live independently. This partnership is even more critical during challenging times, such as a global pandemic. Earlier this year, when COVID hit our State, we made the decision to remain open. As a social services organization, individuals depend on us to be there for them. With that in mind, we created remote outreach efforts to ensure our clients received essential services in a way that was both safe for clients and staff. Our theme for this year’s report is access to healthy and nutritious food should be a right and not a privilege. From the onset of the pandemic, Freshplace food pantry doors remained opened, feeding more people than ever before, and our Community Connections programs provided this vital access to help tear down the barriers faced by those living in poverty. This past year showed us what we can do when we collaborate and work together to help those in need. As our motto states, “Getting Help… Getting Better… Giving Back.” – we are truly grateful to our community partners for your help throughout the year. It is because of you that we can continue to transform lives. On behalf of the clients we serve, the Board of Directors and staff at Chrysalis Center, thank you. Sincerely, Jean K. Wagner Sharon L. Castelli Chair, Board of Directors Chief Executive Officer

Community Supportive Housing services enable our participants to live well by providing safe and supportive housing. Chrysalis Center, through our Community Supportive Housing Programs, focuses on the critical and growing issue of homelessness in our communities. For more than 20 years we have provided a home to individuals struggling with homelessness, a mental illness, substance abuse, Veterans, HIV/AIDS, DCF families and those returning from incarceration. At Chrysalis Center we know that life events can often cascade into homelessness, which can exacerbate physical well-being, mental health, and substance use issues, making securing long-term housing virtually impossible. By providing a network of supportive services, our Community Supportive Housing programs help individuals and families secure safe and affordable housing, and work toward resolving/managing the issues that led them to homelessness. The goal of all our Community Supportive Housing is to help participants find and maintain stable housing long term.
At Chrysalis Center, Recovery Services are tailored to create social R E C O V E RY S E R V I C E S support, peer engagement, employment and leadership skills for individuals who struggle with severe and prolonged mental illness. Through our Recovery and Empowerment Center (REC), individuals receive a variety of social, recreational and wellness opportunities, job training, education, as well as advocacy and empowerment activities. Participants gather in the REC to enjoy programs and socialize in a safe environment. Whether it’s working with a volunteer on their resume, participating in a journaling or mindfulness class or celebrating each other’s achievements, they are learning how to live a better life in recovery. Located on our Hartford Campus, La Cocina is a commercial kitchen which offers culinary arts training to Chrysalis Center participants and other agencies. Our goal is to train participants in the food service industry. In addition, La Cocina Catering has a robust outside catering business offering food services to many companies and groups in the Greater Hartford community and is the sole caterer to the Training and Conference Center.
