< Publisher’s Message UC&D Much to Celebrate at the end of Year No. 5 Well it’s official – we made it through the end of our fifth year at Utah Construction & Design, a milestone we’re proud of, but one we’re not taking for granted. We close this year as always with our most popular issue of the year – a recap of the Most Outstanding Projects of 2017. This year we recognized 36 award-winning projects in 38 categories, an Utah Construction & Design Magazine incredibly diverse mix of projects throughout the state led by our ‘Project of the 2607 S Decker Lake Blvd. Suite 100 Year’ – Vivint Smart Home Arena Renovation, a $125 million, full-blown remake of Salt Lake City, UT 84119 this iconic home of the Utah Jazz. Beyond the size and scope of this project, which O: (801) 747-9202 essentially touched every space of the 743,000 SF, six-level building, jurors were impressed with the fact that construction crews knocked it out in just 129 days, a M: (801) 433-7541 feat made all the more impressive when considering a project of this magnitude www.utahcdmag.com would normally take on average 18-24 months to complete. It’s almost hard to believe it’s been more than 26 years since the then-Delta Center opened in downtown Bradley H. Fullmer Salt Lake City – that was literally more than half my lifetime ago, and I admit I was much more enthralled with Publisher/Managing Editor the Stockton-to-Malone led Jazz at that time than I am of the current rendition of the young team. (Although this Donovan Mitchell kid is a player! Now if only the team had moved up one spot ahead of those evil Lakers at the bfullmer@utahcdmag.com end of the first round and also drafted former University of Utah stud Kyle Kuzma…but enough of my armchair hardwood analysis.) Ladd J. Marshall Few buildings have impacted Salt Lake’s Advertising Sales Director community like Vivint Arena, and at the unveiling lmarshall@utahcdmag.com of the new ‘J-Note’ statue at the Public Open House event Sept. 26, Gail Miller, matriarch of the Larry H. Miller family, was visibly emotional as she Jay Hartwell expressed her appreciation for the many people Art Director who made this project happen, while emphasizing jhartwell@utahcdmag.com that the Jazz and its freshly remodeled home will remain an integral part of Utah’s community long into the future. “I’m very humbled to stand before you today…I take after Larry when it comes to tears,” said Miller. Larry H. Miller family members (Gail Miller pictured “It feels like it was just yesterday that we opened third from left) and executives, Jazz President Steve the doors of this arena for the very first time. It’s Starks (fifth from left), and Okland Construction hard to believe it’s been 25 years. I remember that executives Jeremy Blanck and Brett Okland (far right) day…I remember waiting anxiously for the doors to at the unveiling of the ‘J-Note’ statue September 26 open and watch the crowd enter the building. Larry outside Vivint Smart Home Arena. and I kind of held our breath, thinking ‘What will they think? Will they approve? Will they like it? Will they support us?’ We found that people old and young felt at home in this arena. I remember having a profound sense of appreciation as we shook their hands and welcomed them. We as a family are stewards of this important community resource. “We knew then that we would need to ensure the arena continually exceeded the expectations and served the purpose of enriching our community. For 25 years we’ve worked hard to live up to those expectations. Earlier this year we placed the Utah Jazz and this arena in a legacy trust. We wanted to ensure that all would survive for many, many generations. This is a new beginning, and we’re proud to say we’ve accomplished that purpose – the Jazz and building cannot be separated. They are here to stay!” The other 35 award-winning projects from 2017 weren’t too shabby, either. Another standout, entertainment- related project was Hale Centre Theatre, a dynamic $80 million, 122,000 SF facility in Sandy that boasts Hale’s signature 900-seat ‘theater-in-the-round’ and dynamic mechanical stage, as well as a 461-seat proscenium thrust Utah Construction & Design is published eight (8) times a year.
