Identifying and Recording Adult Mayflies and
Stoneflies

FSC BioLinks is an exciting project for
FSC which brings together existing
volunteers with skills in biological
recording and identification, and new
volunteers. As part of the project remit
a range of subsidised training courses
are available.

         Course Overview

Mayflies and stoneflies are often found around rivers and streams and are excellent indicators
of pollution – the aquatic larval stages are widely used to monitor the health of freshwater.
They are also a vital food resource for many other aquatic species including many fish species.
Adults are often found as ‘bycatch’ in moth traps, and many are readily identifiable with a little
practice, a good hand lens or microscope, and the right ID guide.

This weekend course will provide an introduction to mayflies and stoneflies, their natural
history, how to collect them and how to identify them to species level using microscopes and
keys/field guides. The course will be a mixture of classroom sessions and fieldwork. The course
is suitable for those with an interest in mayflies and stoneflies, especially moth trappers, and
no experience of microscopes or mayfly/stonefly identification is necessary.

By the end of the weekend participants will:
         • Have learnt about the natural history and different ecological roles of mayflies and stoneflies
         • Understand what is known about current UK distributions, and why we need to know more
         • Have had experience of field methods for collecting mayflies and stoneflies
         • Be able to prepare specimens for investigation under the microscope
         • Be able to use keys and microscopes to confirm species identification
         • Know how to record mayflies and stoneflies to the standards of the national recording
         scheme.
         • Know what to do to take their interest further.

Please note that this course may involve the use of specimens that have been killed
         and preserved.

About the Tutor

Craig Macadam has been studying and recording freshwater
invertebrates for over 25 years. His particular specialism is mayflies,
stoneflies and caddisflies, collectively known as 'riverflies'. Craig is the
national recorder for mayflies and stoneflies and a founder member of
the Riverfly Partnership. He co-authored the Field Studies Council
pictorial key to mayflies and the fold out chart for stonefly families.
