to help them learn.
Your child can learn English, meet new friends from
all over the world, explore Scotland on fantastic
supervised study trips, and enhance life skills such
as confidence, team-working and independence.
There are on-site social activities every evening
and the courses focus on learning through fun,
with different topics every week. Your child will be
looked after 24/7 by IH London on-site staff and
we’ll meet them at Edinburgh airport.

The British Council assess the standards of
management, resources and premises, teaching,
welfare, and safeguarding under 18s, and we met
the criteria in all areas.
The British Council noted particular strengths in the
areas of strategic and quality management, staff
management, student administration, premises and
facilities, learning resources, course design, care of
students, leisure opportunities, and safeguarding
under 18s.
The most recent inspection by the British Council
was in July 2019

Newbattle Abbey College was originally a
Cistercian monastery founded in 1140, it then
became a stately home, before being gifted to
the Scottish nation and becoming an educational
institution. The college is eight miles south of
Edinburgh and set in a campus with ornamental
gardens and lawns.
It is an iconic building with a Great Hall,
Old Library and spacious classrooms, with
woodland walks and sports fields in the grounds.

Course content
Students follow a daily programme of 15 hours of
English language lessons in the morning, while
afternoons are devoted to exploring Edinburgh and
surrounding areas.
During the afternoon, students will go on excursions
to places suited to their age such as Butterfly World,
Edinburgh Castle, Museum of Scotland and Edinburgh’s
Dynamic Earth experience!
Each week there is also one full-day excursion to
explore other areas of interest in Scotland, such as the
full-day trip to Loch Lomond and Trossachs National
Park.
There is also one afternoon per week on site for
organised sports and arts activities led by IH staff.
Your child can choose from a range of options such as
rounders, IH Olympics, football, drama, yoga, woodland
walks or arts and crafts. All the activities are with their
own age group.
In the evenings, Explore English Junior students will
have an activity programme with a mix of sports, arts
and crafts, and other activities such as quizzes and
treasure hunts.
Students practise their English inside and outside
of the classroom, for the best learning experience.

class curriculum is integrated into the afternoon
activities. There is a lot to learn about Holyrood
Palace, Arthur’s Seat, Edinburgh Castle, and
much more.
Each week there is also one full-day excursion
further afield so students can make the most
of their time in Scotland and see the highland
mountains, castles and other famous Scottish
cities. See page 16.

to run our own young learner courses with

We have a staff to student ratio on site of 1:5 for ages 8-11 and
1:8 for ages 12-17 at IH Edinburgh Young Learner Centre.

SENIOR MANAGERS
All our young learner schools have four on-site
senior managers:
› Centre Manager, who oversees all aspects of
the school
› Director of Studies, who is responsible for
the quality of the programmes and teacher
development
› Student Welfare Manager, who ensures the
students are having a great time
› Activity Manager, who runs the learning and
social trips and activities.
All senior staff have student welfare training every
year, in addition to professional development.

All teachers have English language qualifications
relevant to the courses they are teaching. The
whole teaching team has a range of experience,
knowledge and skills matched to the courses and
the needs of the students.
The academic managers ensure day-to-day
guidance and support for all teachers and they
observe and monitor teachers’ performance.
All our young learner staff have DBS checks and at
least two references before they can work at our
schools. We ensure a high number of our staff on
site have first aid training.

We offer a meet and greet service on arrival and departure as part of the programme,
and we have three options for transfers:
Option 1
No transfer required You can choose to make your own way to our school No charge
(Students are not permitted to depart the centre alone and must either be
collected by a parent/guardian, book their own transfer or book an IH transfer)
Option 2
Shared transfer The shared transfer service operates for flights arriving or departing £50 each way
between 10:00 and 19:00 on course start dates (Wednesdays) from
Heathrow or Manchester Airports. For Edinburgh, shared transfers operate
from Edinburgh airport every Sunday from 10:00-19.00. Arrivals and
departures outside of these times will require a private transfer.
