One of the earlier established cities, Bikaner still parades its prehistoric magnificence through palaces and forts,
built of red sandstone that has withstood the passage of time.
Bikaner has numerous havelis (aristocratic homes) that are truly a sight to behold. Built of dulmera (red) stone,
every facet of the havelis – jharokhas (casements), entrances, latticed windows, gumaharias or basements – are
solely outlandish. One can notice an abundance of Victorian influence in their design as well.
It is one of the world’s best research grounds for Camels, not just that, it also boasts of some of the world’s
finest riding camels and is fittingly tagged as ‘camel country’. Bikaner is also famous for having its own exclusive
temple devoted to Karni Mata at Deshnok, called the Rats Temple. The city’s most noticeable landmark is the Jaisalmer Fort, also called Sonar
Qila (Golden Fort), which is also a world heritage site. Unlike most other forts
in India, Jaisalmer Fort houses shops, hotels and ancient havelis (homes)
where generations continue to live.
Gadisar Lake, in Jaisalmer, was constructed in the 14th century to meet the

many small temples and shrines this lake is both pristine and picturesque.
The city’s rich cultural heritage, most elaborately carved buildings, colossal
