FEATURE

Western Australia’s striking coastal landscape and breathtakingly rugged terrain have been
beautifully captured in the movie Dirt Music, now screening across Australian cinemas.
Based on the novel by West Australian author Tim Winton, Dirt Music is a gripping drama and a
haunting love story. Directed by Gregor Jordan (Two Hands, Ned Kelly), the film stars Scottish actress
Kelly MacDonald, US actor Garrett Hedlund and Australian favourite David Wenham.

Filmed in the Kimberley in WA’s North West and the Golden Outback region of Esperance, these
incredibly stunning backdrops are a character in the story itself, and made a lasting impression on
the film’s talent and crew.

"WA is from top to bottom extraordinary. It makes you feel so alive being in these places that are so
remote." Actress Kelly MacDonald (Georgie Jutland)

“The landscape and what we’ve captured is kind of even more powerful than I could have hoped for
really. It’s very hard to describe till you see it. It’s a combination sometimes of the heat, the colour of
the water, the trees, the red dirt, it’s kind of so vibrant and loud at times, and then other times it’s
very soft. It’s like nowhere else I’ve been.” Finola Dwyer, Academy Award nominated producer of Dirt
Music

From the contrast of pindan cliffs, white sand beaches and turquoise waters in the Kimberley, to the
vast white sand dunes, rugged bush, granite outcrops and beaches in the Esperance region, the epic
scenery is sure to inspire travellers from near and far to experience first-hand the WA landscapes
that were captured so beautifully on-screen.
Recreate your own Dirt Music adventure with the below list of film locations and experiences.

THE KIMBERLEY

Cape Leveque Road
The colourful landscapes of the Dampier Peninsula can be accessed via Cape Leveque Road. The
turn-off is located approximately 20 kilometres from Broome. Cape Leveque Road will be fully sealed
from November 2020, however high clearance four-wheel-drive vehicles are still recommended for
access to campsites and other attractions. Alternatively, join a guided four-wheel-drive or scenic
flight from Broome.

Kooljaman at Cape Leveque
Located at the northern tip of the Dampier Peninsula, Kooljaman at Cape Leveque is an award-
winning remote wilderness camp owned and run by the Aboriginal Bardi Jawi communities.
Surrounded by a range of natural wonders, a vast array of marine life and striking coastline, guests
can enjoy Kooljaman's range of nature-based activities and unique Aboriginal tours. Accommodation
combines campsites, safari tents, beachfront shelters and cabins.

Lombadina Aboriginal Community
On the shores of beautiful Thomas Bay, Lombadina Aboriginal Community offers visitors a unique
opportunity to experience the local way of life. With cabin accommodation on site, guests can enjoy
the white sandy beaches, take a guided fishing, whale watching or heritage tour, and discover a
range of locally produced arts and crafts. Day tours are available from Broome, or visitors can take a
self-guided trip.
Note: Lombadina Aboriginal Community is currently closed to visitors due to COVID-19 restrictions.

Cygnet Bay Pearl Farm
Also on the Dampier Peninsula is Cygnet Bay Pearl Farm, the oldest operating pearl farm in Australia
– owned and operated by the Brown Family since 1946. Accommodation options range from
camping and safari tents, and pearlers shacks, to the master pearlers private retreat. The on-site
restaurant offers stunning views over Cygnet Bay – and serves up pearl meat fresh from the farm.
Cygnet Bay is also the location to witness the incredible Waterfall Reef - which is featured in the
movie – with Sea Safari Tours departing from the pearl farm to experience this tidal phenomenon.

Gumbanan Wilderness Retreat
The location for some of Dirt Music’s jaw dropping shots, Gumbanan Wilderness Retreat offers
camping and safari tent accommodation, as well as cultural tours and storytelling. Spend some time
exploring the surrounds, including the large rock fish trap 'Mayoorr', which captures fish on the
outgoing tides, and discovering the local bird and wildlife.

Buccaneer Archipelago
Stretching from the coast at One Arm Point, across the King Sound and towards the Horizontal Falls,
the islands of the Buccaneer Archipelago are often called the 'Thousand Islands'. Portrayed in the
movie as 'Coronation Gulf', visitors can experience the islands on a scenic flight or boat tour from
Broome and the Dampier Peninsula (Kooljaman and Cygnet Bay).

Kimberley tides
Home to some of the world's largest tides, visitors to the Kimberley coast are treated to a twice-daily
show as the 10-metre plus tides ebb and flow. From waterfalls that flow horizontally to reefs that
appear in the middle of the ocean, experiencing this tidal trickery is a must. Fly from Broome or
Derby, take a boat tour from Kooljaman or Cygnet Bay, or a cruise along the coast to experience the
rush of these giant tides.

Scenic flights
As the characters Lu, Georgie and Jim fly to the 'Coronation Gulf' in the movie, the spectacular
coastline and the islands of the Buccaneer Archipelago provide a spectacular backdrop, with colours
that have to be seen to be believed. Experience these incredible landscapes firsthand by taking part
in the range of scenic flights that depart from Broome, Derby and the Dampier Peninsula.

Fishing
The Kimberley offers some of the best wilderness and adventure fishing experiences in Australia. As
well as the ever-popular barramundi, there are plenty of freshwater and ocean fishing opportunities
in stunning locations. Cast a line along the Dampier Peninsula, share a cultural experience with the
local Bardi Jawi people and learn traditional fishing and hunting techniques, or head out on a fishing
charter from Kooljaman or Lombadina.

ESPERANCE

Hellfire Bay Road, Cape Le Grand
No movie filmed in Esperance would be complete without a shot of Frenchman Peak. You can see it
in the background of the scenes filmed on Hellfire Bay Road in Cape Le Grand National Park. If you’re
heading to the national park to see the iconic Lucky Bay, be sure to add a stop to climb Frenchman
Peak for some epic views across the coastline and archipelago.

Bandy Creek
The location in the film where the boats are launched, Bandy Creek is a popular spot for fishing and
boating, and has a small beach where the water is usually calm.

Gibson Soak Hotel
As well as writing and performing the soundtrack, Australian folk singer-songwriter Julia Stone
features in the movie. In one scene, Julia and the band play at a gig at the Gibson Soak Hotel - a
classic country pub, decked out under the 100-year-old Morton Bay Fig trees with a lovely garden
out the back.

Twilight Bay
Esperance beaches are rated among the best in Australia and Twilight Bay is one of the most iconic
thanks to its unique rock just off the shore. Located just a few kilometres from town, the pristine
white sands and unbelievably clear turquoise waters create a beautiful vista and perfect swimming
conditions.

Lover’s Cove
A little further along from Twilight Beach, along the scenic Great Ocean Drive, is Lover’s Cove.
Bordered by steep granite slopes and vegetation, this beach is long, wide and picturesque - the
perfect location for an epic love story.
