OPEN /// About
Our approach to design is focused on innovation, quality
and attention to detail. As our name suggests, we’re open to
working on a wide variety of projects: corporate or artisan,
digital, print, environmental or video.
Great work starts with a great brief and we’re open about that
too. Some of our best project briefs begin with an informal
chat. Sometimes they involve inspiring workshops. What still
matters most to us is clear, targeted communication. Our
sole purpose is to make a worthwhile creative impact on your
behalf.

/// 9Information Architecture
Our Understanding
During this phase we establish the groundwork for the website. After the
initial strategy / IA workshop we will have established some core information
architecture for the website. Content types and heads of copy will inform the
initial sitemap. After the sitemap structure is agreed we will look at creating the
page wireframes for the main template pages. The wireframes will identify the
navigational structure and general IA layout. It will also identify any on page
functionality. The sitemap and wireframes must be signed off before proceeding
to design stage.
Every single project that our web team encounter begins with defining your
customer’s requirements. It’s not about you, it’s not about us – it’s all about
them. Research is vital at this point and we place all our efforts into ensuring
we get every single piece of information possible at this early stage to take and
translate into a site that is attractive and incredibly user-friendly.
10 ///User Experience (UX)
The user experience (UX) conveys important messages to the audience about
your business.
With UX design, the user journey is the biggest concern; the user is at the centre
of everything. You want to ensure your visitors doesn’t just have an enjoyable
journey on your website, but a great experience too.
The initial workshop to discuss the projects goals and ambitions. This helps
crystallise the principal aims and objectives of the project and establishes the
core values for the design stage going forward. A summary report of information
gathered from this process forms the basis of the design phase. From this process
we will create the site map and wireframe which become the foundation of the
design and build. This UX foundation is critical part to understanding how the site
is to be build and how a user might navigate through the site with ease.
Our UX principles are:
• Find out about the users (User Research)
• Make sure your content is relevant to them (Content Strategy)
• Make sure they can find it easily (Information Architecture) and
• Move around in your site easily (Interaction Design)
• Make sure your site is aesthetically pleasing (Visual Design), and then finally
• Make sure that it all hasn’t been foiled by something you’ve overlooked – or
couldn’t anticipate at any other stage (Usability).
/// 11Our Design Process
Our Design Process
Our design process is simplified into the following key
points. Once completed, we seek to review and improve
where possible if the task is to be repeated. This is our
opportunity to work even more closely with our client and
nurture the spirit of continual improvement and innovation.
Establishing the creative brief
When starting each new project, we would urge the importance
of meeting with all parties involved to further discuss the brief.
This helps crystallise the principal aims and objectives of each
project and establishes the core values for the design stage going
forward. A summary report of information gathered from this
process forms the basis of the design phase.
Creation of design concepts
With the parameters of each project agreed, the initial design
concepts would be produced. We will present 3 homepage
designs upon which to form feedback. We will then work with
the selected option to bring to the development stage with your
feedback.
Direction of concept development
After presentation of the initial design concepts, comments and
suggested amendments would be analysed and incorporated, the
chosen concepts developed and the preferred options applied to
the list of materials specified

Production/Artwork
This stage includes preparation, overseeing and creation of all
supportive elements in the production process, from exacting
print and online specifications, commissioning of copy writing,
photography, video, illustration, etc. and the creative direction
of same.
Production QC and management
We will liaise closely with all printers or third party suppliers to
achieve the production of the finished collateral to the highest
standard of quality and finish.
Measurement of KPI’s and reporting
Every completed project has a specific output and information
available for review. We share this data with our clients and look for
immediate feedback which informs our decision making as a group
for future projects together. This keeps everyone up to speed.
/// 13Our Technical Process
Our Understanding
Accessibility & Standards
It is important to ensure that the site is accessible to everyone and we are
committed to achieving a minimum of conformance level Double-A with the
Web Accessibility Initiative (WAI) Web Content Accessibility Guidelines and where
possible, ensure that pages are developed in accordance with this standard.
HTML5/CSS3 Templates
During this stage we create the main front end HTML/CSS templates and give the
website structure and form. Will will add any required javascript and animated
transitions. This will lead to HTML/CSS responsive styles for mobile and tablet.
Install Wordpress and all required plugins. Setup My SQL database
We propose to build the site with Wordpress CMS. It is a very user friendly CMS
with great flexibility and scaleability. It is the most widely adopted CMS by a large
margin. It is Open source and has no licence fees attached. It is very easy to use
with intuitive admin controls. Having access to the source-code allows us to
develop custom functionality and extend the base system to meet specific
client requirements. Also from an SEO perspective, Search Engines Love
Wordpress. The code is simple making it easy for search engines to read and
index a site’s content.
Audit trail
At the various stages of site map, wireframes, site design and build. We will
provide files clearly marked with the version number so we can easily track
rounds of changes. Also there will be clear stages that we will require client to
sign off on work completed prior to moving on the next stage. We implement
a version control system to speed up the site build and to track any change
requests being made.
14 ///Our Technical Process
Training
We will provide a 3 hour training workshop on the use of the system for up to
6 attendees. If further training in the administration and use of Wordpress is
required we can do so at an hourly rate.
Build PHP Wordpress templates
At this point we will build any required PHP Wordpress and custom code and
create the full Wordpress template. We custom build all our Wordpress templates
from scratch which means that we are not reliant on 3rd party updates to
template themes. It also means that we can completely tailor the templates to
your content and outlined in the wireframes and final designs.
3rd Party Software
There are a number of 3rd party modules we would use to create a well rounded
system the achieves high functionality and user experience at a relatively low end
cost. We only use a few critical 3rd party plugins. This means we don’t rely too
heavily on 3rd party updates so we are less likely to have clashes or security issues
arising.
Speed Optimisation
We will use the latest standards to optimise the site. The website will cache pages
to improve speed, along with minifying scripts and style sheets. We will compress
any images so they are optimum for delivery. Check on page optimisation for
render blocking and script delivery. We will test the website on Google Speed
Insights and with other tools to check that the delivery on desktop and mobile is
as fast as it can be aiming for a 90% rating or above overall.
/// 15Our Technical Process
Our Understanding
Website site SEO
We will tackle the SEO for the website on multiple levels. 1st will be on the site
itself in making sure the latest standards with meta data and adding title and alt
tags to menus and images. Wordpress is build very well for SEO as its easy for
search engine spiders to crawl pages, posts, categories and tags. We will boost
this with the addition of Yoast SEO plugin which will analyse on page SEO and
give extra control through titles, keywords and descriptions that are search engine
friendly. We will create site maps and add them through the Google site manager
tool to check that Google is reading the site correctly. We will also add the
Google analytics tracking code so that we can accurately assess traffic on the site.
Mapping on URLs on Current Website to Htaccess / 301 Redirects file creation &
Installation via server admin.
Administration usability
Wordpress has a level of content administration build in. You have various levels
of users that can be setup so that have certain privileges and role types. We can
enhance this with a plugin that will give us extra levels of granular options for this.
So that we might assign a user to only be able to edit certain pages authorised
by admin. We can do this on individual levels or group levels. This will need to be
manually set by your selected administrator.
Hosting
We can provide or recommend a hosting platform if required. We mainly use
dedicated Wordpress hosting systems though we have worked with a range of
hosting suppliers to deliver the right technical specifications for the job in hand.
Our prefered hosting platforms will run on up to date versions of PHP and MySQL
ensuring that security and comparability is high.
16 ///Our Technical Process
Backups
We backup all websites to a dropbox account. We will provide 8 weekly database
backups and 4 monthly full backups. This can be in addition to your own hosting
backups.
Security
We will setup Wordpress with best practices in security and hardening procedures.
We utilise plugins such as Sucuri scanner and Google re-captcha to aid in the
process of hardening and monitoring the site. Security Activity Audit Logging, File
Integrity Monitoring, Remote Malware Scanning, Blacklist Monitoring, Effective
Security Hardening, Post-Hack Security Actions, Security Notifications. https://
wordpress.org/plugins/sucuri-scanner/. We will enforce strong password and also
login lockouts when a brute force hack s detected.
We will setup your website with an SSL certificate to serve the website via HTTPS.
The type of SSL certificate provided will depend on your chosen hosting company
and what they can work with.
/// 17Our Technical Process
Our Understanding
Testing / UAT / Bugfixing
During this phase we will check the website delivery across mobile, tablet and
desktop platforms. Targeting Mac OS, IOS, PC and Android. We test on the more
recent browser versions on Chrome, Safari, Firefox and IE.
We will create a UAT (user acceptance testing) document 2 weeks before the go
live date. This document (shared Google sheet) is where Open and the client can
list any final bugs or changes prior to go live. This document covers items agreed
in the original website specifications rather new additions. Any additions deemed
as new work will need to be specified and time scheduled accordingly.
After go live Open will allow up to 2 weeks of final bug fixes. After this time a
maintenance agreement or hourly rate can be put into place to cover any new
requirements or development/design changes to the website.
Ongoing maintenance plan
We recommend a quarterly site maintenance plan. To include CMS & plugin
software updates, check backups and general security updates. Additional
maintenance hours can be added and can be spread between: content changes,
additional functional requirements and site enhancements. We will aim to keep
any site downtime to a maximum of 1 hour during maintenance, though its
usually less. We run any updates and maintenance on a staging site to test before
rolling the changes out live.
Technical support
We offer phone or email technical support during 9-6 office hours. Though if the
support is a of a critical nature to accessing the website we will endeavour to do
what we can out of hours to resolve the problem.
