Pastoral
Letter
from
Rev
Kenneth
Stott
My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. Greater love has
no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. 14 You are my
friends if you do what I command. I no longer call you servants, because a
servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you
friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to
you (John 15:12-15)
Dear
friends,
And
I
mean
that
most
sincerely!
“Dear
friends.”
As
I
was
driving
to
the
church
this
morning
I
heard
a
news
report
that
a
major
social
media
outlet
was
tightening
up
its
rules.
Apparently,
a
number
of
organisations
measure
their
success
by
the
number
of
“likes
or
“friends”
that
they
have.
It
is
important
to
be
able
to
show
that
you
are
liked
and
followed,
and
it
gives
you
credibility
especially
if
you
want
people
to
invest
in
your
organisation.
The
problem
is
that
many
of
these
“friends”
or
“likes”
are
not
real-‐
they
are
manufactured
and
created
and
offered
for
a
price.
We
have
become
accustomed
to
the
phrase
“fake
news”
and
so
now
we
now
have
“fake
friends”
or
“fake
followers”.
Perhaps
your
response
is
–
“so
what
is
new?”
Long
before
we
had
the
internet
and
social
media
we
had
the
experience
of
“fake
friends”.
We
may
look
back
and
think
of
painful
times
when
we
expected
our
friend
or
friends
to
be
there
for
us
in
a
time
of
need.
There
can
be
memories
rooted
in
school
days
when
we
thought
we
had
a
good
friend
only
to
experience
the
pain
of
them
rejecting
us
to
go
and
play
with
another
group
of
pupils.
In
later
life
we
may
have
encountered
a
whole
range
of
disappointments
from
so
called
friends
-‐
we
discover
that
they
were
not
genuine,
or
they
used
the
“friendship”
to
get
something
from
us.
There
may
also
be
times
when
we
expected
our
friend
to
be
there
at
a
point
of
our
need
and
yet
they
turned
away
from
us
or
ignored
us.
It
is
hard
to
make
a
discovery
that
the
friend
is
not
what
they
seemed
to
be.
In
the
Bible,
friendship
is
praised
as
a
gift
to
be
cherished,
protected
and
developed.
I
am
reading
the
book
of
Proverbs
at
the
moment
and
one
of
the
reflections
on
life
is
this
-‐
Proverbs
18:24
“A
man
of
many
companions
may
come
to
ruin,
but
there
is
a
friend
who
sticks
closer
than
a
brother.”
This
theme
of
friendship
suggests
two
things
to
me
as
pastor
of
Perth
North.
The
first
is
to
be
reminded
that
the
gathering
of
believers
is
to
be
a
place
of
friendship.
That
may
appear
to
be
too
simplistic
but
God
calls
His
people
to
love
and
care
for
each
other.
To
think
of
friendships
is
to
be
challenged
about
our
willingness
to
be
there
for
others.
It
might
jar
you
as
cliched,
but
the
phrase
“keep
it
real”
is
a
plea
for
many
today
to
find
places
and
people
that
are
real,
authentic.
In
our
recent
evening
services,
the
group
discussions
reminded
many
of
us
that
we
may
be
struggling
with
the
same
questions.
In
3
admitting
difficulties,
there
is
the
possibility
of
developing
a
real
and
genuine
faith
in
the
company
of
real
friends.
It
takes
time
and
sensitivity
but
will
we
seek
to
be
a
place
of
growing
friendships
-‐
friendships
that
cut
across
age
or
gender
divisions?
There
are
many
people
today
who
are
looking
for
real
friendships
-‐
they
do
not
want
fake
smiles
or
even
flashy
gimmicks
but
to
be
in
a
place
where
love
and
care
is
given
and
received.
What
a
great
evangelistic
opportunity
we
have
in
this
friendship-‐seeking
culture.
Secondly,
the
quote
at
the
top
of
the
letter
form
John’s
gospel
reminds
us
that
without
compromising
His
holiness
and
power,
the
God
of
the
Universe
sent
His
son
to
draw
us
back
into
ambling
friendship
with
Him.
Through
Jesus
we
can
become
friends
with
God,
a
friendship
that
allows
us
to
experience
His
love
and
company,
and
which
changes
us
and
enables
us
to
be
friends
with
others.
There
may
well
be
people
who
dismiss
such
a
claim
as
simplistic
and
childish
but
such
responses
are
often
from
people
seeking
to
avoid
the
possibility
of
being
known
and
loved
by
God.
Without
dwelling
too
long,
we
may
remember
some
of
the
stories
from
the
Bible
where
fake
followers
were
identified
and
exposed.
There
were
men
and
women
who
said
one
thing
to
God
but
whose
hearts
and
minds
were
never
really
touched
by
His
grace
and
love.
As
we
look
to
the
autumn
and
the
coming
session
with
anticipation,
could
we
commit
ourselves
afresh
to
not
only
being
open
to
developing
new
friendships
within
the
congregation
and
parish,
but
also
open
to
deepening
our
discipleship,
for
ultimately
to
be
a
friend
with
Jesus
is
to
be
shaped
by
Him.
If
all
of
this
seems
too
hard,
have
a
think
about
the
hymn-‐
“What
a
friend
we
have
in
Jesus”
and
in
particular
the
lines
-‐
“Do
thy
friends
despise,
forsake
thee?
Take
it
to
the
Lord
in
prayer!
In
His
arms
He’ll
take
and
shield
thee,
Thou
wilt
find
a
solace
there.”
Your
minister
and
friend,
Kenny

We Need Your Help
As you know the audio-visual equipment is essential to our worship on Sundays and at
some other times. Currently we have a very small team of volunteers and to relieve the
pressure on them we need to increase this group. Could you help us please?
Full training will be given and one of our trained volunteers would be alongside you until
you were fully confident.
If you are interested and willing to help with this vital work, please contact:
Douglas Clarke, tel. 630135; Shauna Conochie, tel. 628262; or the Church office, tel.

Although the North Church is no longer taking bulk deliveries and custom checking boxes we
would encourage our congregation to continue to support this appeal. Wrapped boxes will be
available as in previous years. We hope that filled boxes and fillers will be returned to the church
where arrangements will be made with Blythswood for collection.

Perth Alive - Update
Saturday 25th August 12 noon – 4pm on the North Inch
This is the fourth year that this fantastic event has taken place on the North
Inch. It is very much an event for the whole family from young to old, and the
wonderful thing is that so many churches and denominations are involved,
Christians working together in Perth and having fun! There is a stage with
music, singing and drama. There are marquees which house children’s activities,
the wonderful results of an inter-church flower arranging competition, a tent
for prayer, Christian organisation stalls, and more. Outside the marquees there
are activities: five aside football competition, inflatables, bungee trampolines!
There is also tea / coffee / juice and hamburgers available most of the day and
at 3pm there will be Songs of Praise. Come along and enjoy yourselves!
Volunteers are needed and for more information about the event, contact the
North Church Representative, Katie Dalgliesh
Holy Communion is celebrated on the last Sunday of each month at the services detailed below:
-
At 9.30 am service : January, April, July and October
At 11 am service : February, May, August and November
At 6.30 pm service : March, June, September and December
After the lunchtime service on the following Thursdays: Last Thursday in January, Maundy
Thursday (Holy Week), last Thursday in August and Advent Thursday
