21. THE PROJECT
SCAPE Public Art is making this public open call opportunity to all Christchurch and Canterbury
young people to respond to a brief to provide designs for a unique work of public art for the SCAPE
Season 2018 – Re:ACTIVATE Junior and Senior Aspiring Artist Exhibition.
Submitted designs will be shortlisted to up to 20 for exhibition. One design in each category will be
produced for SCAPE’s Season 2018, with the support and sponsorship of Lewis Bradford
Consulting Engineers and Dominion Constructors, who will engineer and project manage the
artworks production installation and de-installation.
Re:ACTIVATE Junior is for junior school years 1 – 8
Re:ACTIVATE Senior is for senior school years 9 - 13
Hagley Park will be the site to temporarily display two finalists new public artwork (see site plan on
Appendix 1, page 9 and site images on Appendix 2, pages 10 – 12).
SCAPE will include the new public artworks within its 6 week SCAPE Public Art Season 2018
starting 6 October – 17 November 2018. Consideration should be given to Health and Safety,
vandalism and accessibility within the brief.
New public artworks will be a maximum of 5 metres in any direction with a lifespan of 2 – 3 years.
The selected artwork will be free to view as part of the Re:ACTIVATE Kids and Teen Aspiring Artist
Public Art Exhibition.
2. THEME: SCAPE Public Art 2018: Our braided
future
E kore e taea e te whenu kotahi ki te raranga i te whāriki kia mōhio ki a tātou – the tapestry of
understanding cannot be woven by one thread alone.
Key themes:
The braided river: This could relate to the ecological and environmental importance and the
uniqueness of braided rivers in Canterbury, and can also relate to looking at the rivers as a
symbol of interconnection, the intertwining/braiding of peoples and stories, where different
perspectives meet and encounter one and other.
Sub-themes; communication/exchange/listening/understanding other people’s perspectives.
“The biologically rich braided rivers are one of the last remaining bastions of biodiversity in the
Canterbury Plains, forming a vital ecological link from the mountains to the sea. Unique

Tapestry of understanding: A tapestry is created through a weaving process when both warp
and weft (opposites) become woven together to create a greater, whole piece. This weaving
may refer to a pattern or equally a story created from many strands. What are the stories of
Ōtautahi?
Hidden stories behind a site?
Considering different periods of recent history in the city over the last 20 years, the past,
present and future
Imagining a new future. Imagining what the city might look like, and who might live there
(including people, but also plants, wild life – indigenous and introduced species).
33. OVERVIEW
Project/Opportunity: Public artworks for kids and teen students within the SCAPE 2018 Season for
unique new public artworks to be installed within Hagley Park. The opportunity will be delivered and
produced with SCAPE Public Art.
Open call selection process: To all young people (18 years of age and under) living within the
Christchurch and Canterbury region are invited to respond to this brief and submit designs for
small scale public artworks. From the 1:10 scale models or A3 poster presentation designs
submitted up to 20 finalists will be exhibited with two category winners being produced for
exhibition 6 October – 17 November 2018. Note an extension to the display of artworks could
occur.
Participants are asked in this brief to respond to the theme of SCAPE Public Art 2018: Our braided
future. The goal is for the temporary public artworks to surprise and challenge everyday
perceptions of the people who will visit Hagley Park, also to respond to the concepts for the city’s
recovery as an attractive and vibrant place in which to live, work, visit and play.
This is an opportunity for Re:ACTIVATE Junior and Senior student participants to create public
artworks that surprise and challenge our everyday perceptions of the regenerating inner-city.
VALUES AND BELIEFS OF MANA WHENUA
The overarching Ngāi Tūāhuriri value for the Christchurch recovery is Kia atawhai ki te iwi – Be kind
to your people. This utterance derives from the ōhākī of Tū-rākau-tahi, and was repeated by Pita Te
Hori in 1861 to Christchurch leaders. Ngāi Tūāhuriri believes the recovery journey must
demonstrate care for the citizens of the city, and encourage warmth and a sense of welcoming
within the recreated city. Pita Te Hori was the first Ūpoko Rūnanga of Ngāi Tūāhuriri and a defender
of Kaiapoi Pā. Along with many of his generation, Te Hori established the nature of the relationship
Ngāi Tahu would have with Pākehā.
HAGLEY PARK AND THE CENTRAL CITY
4. SITE/CONTEXT
Hagley Park is the largest urban open space (164.637 hectares] in Christchurch, New Zealand,
and was created in 1855 by the Provincial Government. According to the government's decree at
that time, Hagley Park is "reserved forever as a public park, and shall be open for the recreation
and enjoyment of the public." Hagley Park is characterised by its trees and broad open spaces.
Hagley Park was named after Hagley Park, the country estate of Lord Lyttelton, who became
chairman of the Canterbury Association in March 1850.

45. WORK OF ART
Audience and Stakeholders
The produced artworks are to be enjoyed by the people of Christchurch and visitors to the City,
Hagley Park (families, youth, tourists)
Ngāi Tūāhuriri as mana whenua
Ngāi Tahu as tangata whenua
Design Standards
Small scale works for installation within the Hagley Park areas shown in Appendices 1 and 2) which
could be installed:
• Within park open spaces
• Placed on a plinth
Works must be robust, withstand the elements and not be easily removed nor attract graffiti.
Works could be:
• Collaborative
• Made of natural or recycled materials or engineered from new materials such as
aluminum, steel, timber and plastic
• Involve community groups within the process
The work must be of a high standard, relevant to the cultural and physical context of Christchurch.
The work of art needs to:
• Be of small scale and easy to install and de-install
• Be robust and safe for public viewing; the work of art is expected to be on display
outdoors in Christchurch for up to six weeks
• The works must not be detrimental to the environment
• Have minimal maintenance requirements
• Meet health and safety standards and ensure public safety
• Work needs to be a maximum of 5 metres in any direction
• Have a 2 – 3 year lifespan and this should be a consideration of material choices
• SCAPE reserves the right to make the selected artworks available for sale. An agreed
commission split paid on sold artworks will be agreed between the parties.

67. ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
Please prepare your proposal and send in the following details by 1 June 2018:
• Your idea – design for your public artwork. This can be an A4 or A3 sketch, drawing or
computer montage (showing your idea/design on site), or 1:10 scale model (optional).
• Proposed materials, and display method.
• A short statement between 50 – 250 words that outlines your idea – design for your public
artwork – your underlying story.
• Submissions are limited to 5 – 10 presentations per age group for schools. If schools need
help selecting these please contact Josie Whelan, SCAPE Education and Community
Engagement Manager.
• Designs should be a maximum of 5 metres in any direction with a lifespan of 2 – 3 years of the
materials – artworks will be available for sale.
You are requested to submit your initial concepts by 1 June 2018. Your design proposal should be
forwarded to: Josie Whelan, Education and Community Engagement Manager, SCAPE Public Art, PO
Box 763, Christchurch 8140 or education@scapepublicart.org.nz. Notification of selected designs
for production will occur week beginning 2-6 July 2018.
Note: Your submission should be no larger than 5MB in size if electronic and in a PDF
format.
Following the submission of design concept, they will be reviewed by the Project Selection Team to
ensure that they satisfy the brief criteria e.g. ensuring health and safety requirements are complied
with. The Project Selection Team will make the final decision to accept the design or otherwise.
SCAPE Public Art, Lewis Bradford Engineers, and Dominion Constructors will manage the
fabrication and installation of the selected designs in each section to include approaches for
sponsorship.
Note: Immediate family of SCAPE Public Art, Lewis Bradford Consulting Engineers,
Dominion Construction and Re:ACTIVATE sponsors will not be eligible to enter.

79. COPYRIGHT
The parties agree that the selected artist retains copyright in all respects of the Design.
It is understood that SCAPE has facilitated this opportunity and shall be permitted to use
photographs of the Designs and Works of Public Art in its publicity material and make public
reference to its association.
The selected artist will allow SCAPE Public Art to produce two - dimensional reproductions of the
selected Designs and Works of Public Art for normal purposes including but not limited to publicity
and promotion, provided such reproductions preserve, in the absolute opinion of the Artist acting
reasonably and in good faith, the artistic integrity of the Work of Public Art.
