Logos of the many food delivery companies. It hit me last night. The role of a properly made wine Last night we ordered from a national burger chain that we've been to dozens of times was made even clearer. It is all about the experience. I with our kids after game team parties. We like their hamburgers, fries, and chicken am tired of Door Dash, Postmates, GrubHub and all other sandwiches. The food we received was hot and made to the corporate standard, food degradation programs. It is impossible to have a certainly acceptable had we been sitting in a booth. After the meal, I looked at Sandra decent meal from any restaurant if served by a food and said, “boy did that suck….one of the most uninspiring meals I have ever had.” delivery program. And the reason parallels wine. Why? It was the same food. It was hot. It tasted exactly the same as when we I believe food is meant to be experiential and to make one dine in. Then it hit me because it wasn’t the food! It was my kitchen table. When emote (no, not the kind of emoting you get from chili). I we scrub through the menus or our local restaurants while on the delivery app, remember sitting in a tourist café in Paris ordering the we are not conjuring up just the character of the food we are seeking, we are quiche of the day (thus disproving that real men don’t also reflecting on the overall experience we desire. When the food arrives in eat quiche). As it arrived, I was knocked back 50 years to plastic or cardboard containers, we end up frustrated with the experience (not sitting at the dinner table with my father, mother, brother, the food). Isn’t there something horribly wrong with opening a clear clam-shell and sister. My mother made the same quiche and at that food container with that $40 New York steak as compared to the server setting a moment 6,000 miles away from the original experience, sizzling hot plate in front of you? It is the experience we are seeking, not the food. I was transported back to that time and place. I had to sit back and ponder this food memory because it was Wine is a sense of time and place. It is a connecting rod from the earth to the so vivid, and I felt glee. I think wine conjures the same soul and one can be taken away by the mere bouquet of a properly crafted wine experiences and we have had this discussion before. no matter the environmental conditions. in front of the Eiffel Tower and experiencing Paris with a glass of fine Bordeaux, you can experience the glass of fine Bordeaux to conjure up the memory of sitting in front of the Eiffel Tower. At our home, the first question is, when and where do you want to go tonight. A properly thought-out bottle of wine can take you to where you want to go…. food delivery or not. As Ernest Hemingway said in “A Moveable Feast” “…and washed it down with the crisp taste of the wine, I lost the empty feeling and began to be happy and to make plans.” Salud... be safe... stay well. This Merlot predates the first Duckhorn and was considered an oddity when released. We knew it wasn’t and our members agreed. Selection for January 1981 TORRE DI GIANO, 1978 LUNGAROTTI There are 21 wine producing regions in Italy, and literally in the center of this famous wine consuming country is the region of Umbria. One of the well known wines of the region is Torre di Giano or Torgiano, named after the village where it is made. The "Tower of Janus" apparently stood near these vineyards in medieval times. Janus was an ancient Roman deity considered to be the guardian of the vine. Nobody had heard of it until we featured it.

WHY I CHOSE THIS WINE “ Seriously incredible value... ” – PK u e SCO RE RUTZ CELLARS al 97 v * 2018 PINOT NOIR Sonoma County, California 14.1 % Alcohol by Volume “ pee • noh • nwahr ” Keith Rutz never thought of owning a winery. He grew up in Illinois, went COLOR to Berkeley Business School and became production director for Esprit de Medium Magenta Corps, an elite brand of health and beauty products. That position took him around the world, primarily the fashion capitals like France and Italy. As NOSE an aside, they both happen to produce almost half the wines made in the Candy, Mint, Roses world. It was just a matter of time before Keith discovered why. Repeated trips to Burgundy were enough to have the lure of the vine. PALATE Richly Textured Chardonnay and Pinot Noir especially become too much a part of you to ignore. So, in 1991, he took the plunge founding Rutz Cellars in one of the havens for those grapes in Sonoma County, California. Keith didn’t FINISH Alluring Tannins want to make a California Pinot Noir. He wanted to make a Burgundian Pinot Noir. Many have tried, more have failed. He knew he had to go at it from the ground up. That meant importing clones of Pinot Noir from PAIRING Red Meat, Game, Burgundy, finding similar soils, and using exclusively French oak barrels Vegetarian from different forests. The results are nothing short of amazing. COLOR We tend to look at a bottle of wine as something that just marvelously Glistening Gold appeared on our table, without considering how someone had planted the grapes, picked them, and went through the process of making the wine. All NOSE those facts make up the intriguing backstory of this wine. Perfume Harvesting the grapes provides the most kinetic backstory. People scurrying around as fast as their feet will allow either giving or getting directions or PALATE Apple, Pear many times both to get the grapes to the winery and crushed as soon as possible. It feels like bedlam and sometimes it is, but it always gets done. Things are perhaps much more organized at Backstory though because FINISH Lip Smacking they are owned by O’Neill Vintners. They are one of the largest and most advanced wine operations in California. They can afford to put the latest technology in place to do nearly everything needed to prohibit human error PAIRING Fish, Fowl, Vegetarian and even to do things that humans can’t. One of those things is infrared imaging of the vines with high tech sensors able to detect problems in a vine’s growth. WHY I CHOSE THIS WINE “ The favored Chilean grape... ” – PK HERMOSO u e SCO RE HERMOSA al 96 v * 2019 CARMÉNÈRE Central Valley, Chile 13 % Alcohol by Volume “ kaar·muh·nehr ” Our selection comes to us from Los Morros, which means “hills,” and refers COLOR to the hills that run alongside the vineyards of winemaker Miguel Besoain’s Vibrant Magenta family home in Chile’s Central Valley. Miguel learned his winemaking skills in Chile, but expanded upon them with stints in France and Germany before joining his father in the family estate. NOSE Berry, Earth The Carménère grape’s name comes from Carmin—a French word meaning crimson. It is in reference to the crimson color of the leaves on the vine before PALATE they fall off. It is an interesting grape that is the naturally occurring cross Lovely Feel between Cabernet Franc and Gros Cabernet. The reason that Carménère disappeared from Bordeaux was due to this grape demanding consistent FINISH warmth in its long growing season, which was something that Bordeaux Medium Grip simply could not dependably offer. The result was lower yields and viticultural problems due to excessive rain. It therefore was ripped out of its home and PAIRING thought of to be extinct until the 1990s when winemakers in Chile cultivated Red Meat, Game a late ripening clone of Merlot that turned out to be the missing Carménère. The grape wound up in Chile from immigration when many Europeans resettled in Chile and brought with them grape vines to propagate and grow. CELLAR Now thru 2024 The wrong climate can make growing this grape very challenging and problematic. Carménère, however, lives up to its full potential in the Central Valley of Chile.
