Domaine Lafage Cayrol Vieilles Vignes
Carignan 2014
IGP Côtes Catalanes, Roussillon, France
494039 (XD) 750 mL $19.95 2
TASTING NOTE: The 2014 IGP Cotes Catalanes
Cayrol Carignan Vieilles Vignes comes from the
black schist soils of the Agly valley (mostly from
around Maury) and 100-year-old vines. Seeing a
slightly longer elevage than the Tessellae cuvee and
spending 14 months all in demi-muids, it gives
up lots of spice and sandalwood characteristics, as
well as more black cherry liqueur, chocolate and
dusty, rock-like minerality. Hedonistic, textured,
rounded and downright sexy, it’s another terrific
wine from this estate that readers should snatch up.
It should dish out tons of pleasure over the coming
4-5 years. Drink Date: 2016-2021. Score: 92

I’ve been with the LCBO for almost 15
years, as a Product Consultant for five.
It’s hard to believe now, but I used to
hate wine! I was a bartender, and not
interested in much beyond cocktails.
Then I began reading about, studying
and tasting wine, and everything
changed. Now I host wine tastings,
helping my friends appreciate as many
styles, regions and countries as
possible. I love that wine has something
for everyone and every occasion
– whether it’s for a wedding or for
relaxing in a bubble bath, I can help
find the perfect wine for that! ”

I love discovering different wines from
around the world and seeing how
terroir impacts the characteristics of
each one. I also find it interesting to
learn what winemakers do to enhance
particular aspects of a wine. It’s so
much fun to taste a wine and try to
understand why it tastes the way it
does. For me, wine has always added
something extra-special to family and
social occasions. When I see a bottle
that I served at a special family meal,
it immediately brings me back to that
gathering. I love that I get to help other
people experience that.”

for me, the 2014 La Encina Centenaria feels
earthier, with more influence from Monastrell
with aromas of tree bark and esparto grass, and
elegant rusticity in the palate. It has good depth
and balance. Quite classical in style, with
vinification and upbringing in oak barrels for
one year. A nice addition to the portfolio, with
more contained ripeness than some of the more
expensive wines. Drink Date: 2016-2018.
