Third Sunday of Lent - Luke 13:1-9
O
n Ash Wednesday we started our annual observance of Lent. In Lent the Christian pillars of
Almsgiving, Fasting, and Prayer are given great emphasis. These disciplines help us spiritually to
prepare for the Paschal Festivities for sure. However, through them the disciple is called to turn away
from sinful and selfish ways and turn toward our Lord. Certainly, it is a
call to consider our dignity as Christians. Mother Church teaches us
how to live the dignified life of a Christian. Our 2nd reading from Ash
Wednesday, St. Paul’s 2nd letter to the Corinthians (2 Corinthians 5:20—6:2) says the
disciples are to live as ‘ambassadors for Christ. God as it were appealing through us.’ There is
a dignity given the office of an ambassador.
In the secular sense a government confers honor on an individual whom it appoints its
ambassador in a foreign country. The person is the representative of his homeland in the
land to which they are accredited. The function of the ambassador is to protect and

advance, as it were, the interests of his/her country in another land. The person acts in the
name of the person’s leader. Of course such an ambassador would seek out peace and

harmony with the other country. With this in mind the ambassador for Christ also has a great
dignity conferred through Baptism (and Confirmation). For this reason the Baptized act in
the name of Christ and can perform acts of charity and peace in Jesus name.
ambassadors.
In a way, on Ash Wednesday, when we are marked with the sign of the cross in ashes, we
are reminded that during our life on earth we are dwelling in a foreign land for our true
country is the kingdom of God. The cross of Christ reminds us of our role as ambassadors. To
carry His cross daily dignifies us. As His ambassadors we are to advance the kingdom of God
on earth. It is the teaching of Second Vatican Council that we the disciples today are to
remind others of God. We are to remind others of His love, His mercy, and His goodness. As
ambassadors of Christ we should remind others of our Leader.
The disciplines of almsgiving, prayer, and fasting are the fulfillment of the ambassador of Christ. Of course these tasks are
not done only in Lent, but always. These works are a lifetime expression of our ambassadorship. We should understand that
almsgiving or charity is a sign to others of our Lord’s goodness; in charity we share with others the blessings we have
received from God. The discipline of fasting is a sign of God’s forgiveness; by fasting we ask our Lord’s forgiveness of our
sins and at the same time remind others that God does indeed forgive repentant sinners. Prayer calls to mind the very
presence of God; for it is a conversation with God who is present to all who call upon him.
MARCH 24, 2019 THIRD SUNDAY OF LENT PAGE 4Ambassadors for Christ are to promote the kingdom of God
always. St. Paul describes this aspect of our role as “God as it
were appealing through us.” (2 Cor 5:20) God uses us to
sanctify the world; the Second Vatican Council pointed out
that the world is to be sanctified in its secular aspects. And
so such moments are not confined only within the walls of
our church, at Mass, or in prayer only. We are the means by
which the grace of God is inserted into every aspect of
human activity and life. As ambassadors of Christ we are to
plead His cause.
And please understand this, with no ambiguity, that we are
to exert influence in the political, economic and social
spheres of human society as His ambassadors! We do this
always keeping in mind of the great destiny (heaven) of
every human person and do what we can to make it possible
for others to know this, to pray and to practice heavenly
virtues.
So let our Lenten practices advance the kingdom of God on
earth. Fasting reminds us and others that there is more than
just the things of this world – there is the glory of heaven.
Charity prepares souls for the perfect unending love of the
kingdom of Heaven and our God. Finally, prayer anticipates
on earth the wondrous work of heaven; the praise and
glorification of God!
The sign of the cross that was traced in ash on your foreheads on Ash Wednesday was not a badge of shame; it was a sign
of our dignity in Christ. Thus it was a renewal of our assignment as ambassadors for Christ. In the words of St. Paul, “We are
ambassadors for Christ. God as it were appealing through us” (2 Cor 5:20). Let us be good…great ambassadors for our Lord
Jesus Christ!
Blessings,
Fr. Mark Guzman, Pastor

SAINT OF THE WEEK
St. Francis of Paola, Hermit
Although St. Francis of Paola (1416-1507) was attracted to the Franciscan friars, he longed for a
more contemplative life grounded in solitude and asceticism. Building upon the Franciscan
tradition, he founded the hermits of Brother Francis of Assisi, which eventually became know as
the Minim Friars, meaning “the least” of all God’s servants. The community had a strong devotion
to the five wounds of Christ and the Virgin Mary. Due to his reputation for holiness and the
miraculous, King Louis Xi of France requested St. Francis’ spiritual guidance as he was preparing
for death. Sain Francis spent the last twenty-five years of his life advising kings and restoring
peace between France and its neighboring countries. Many miracles connected to the sea have
been attributed ot him; therefore, he is the patron saint of navigators and naval officers.

MARCH 24, 2019 THIRD SUNDAY OF LENT PAGE 6BACH’S STATIONS OF THE
CROSS - THIS SATURDAY
Please join us this Saturday, March 30th at St. Nicholas after
the 5:30 PM Mass for the music of Bach’s Well-Tempered
Clavier in the form of The Stations of the Cross, played by
pianist Charles Hiestand.
Bach, as all Baroque composers, attempted to express a single
emotion with each piece. The Well-Tempered Clavier is a
collection in two books of 96 different pieces, four in each
key. It was revolutionary for its time, and is still revered by
pianists, organists, & composers. With so many opportunities
to give musical garb to emotion, there is a lot to choose from. LOOKING FOR GOOD MOVIES

BAILEY LOPEZ
Tell us a little about yourself and your family.
St. Nicholas has been my family’s home since I was a baby. My dad grew up in Wapato and my mom
grew up in Tacoma, and they have raised all of us here. I currently serve as a Sacristan and help train altar
servers. Mom and Dad both serve as Mass Facilitators here, so being involved in church is a crucial part
of our family life. I have one older sister who also worked as an altar server, and I have a twin sister,
Brooke. I’ve always been really close with my sisters. I love being a twin because I’m more of a shy person
and Brooke very outgoing, so we balance each other out. She’s my best friend, and I never feel alone. I
went to school from Kindergarten through eighth grade here at St. Nicholas and I currently go to
Bellarmine.
What was it like going to school here? How has Catholic education shaped your life?
It was amazing going to school here. We had a small class of 16 kids in my grade, so we all became very
close. More than half of them go to Bellarmine with me. A lot of people worry that small class sizes
would be hard on us as students, but I loved how it was so small. People should not worry about that. I
had an easier time getting to know people on a deeper level, because I wasn’t intimidated by a large
class. I got to be so close with all the teachers, they really knew me and could joke around with me.
Transitioning to Bellarmine was hard at first because I was taking college-preparation classes and the size was huge, but I’ve made so many
friends and I felt prepared academically. My favorite class is our “Ignatian Formation” – a small homeroom class that remains the same for all four
years. It’s like a little family, a little community. It’s a free period where we do homework, play card and board games, host special food days, and
go to Mass together.
I’ve gone to Catholic school all my life so I’m a little nervous about going to a non-Catholic school for college. But Brooke, my twin, is planning on
attending Eastern Washington University with me, so we will have each other to lean on. I am looking forward to getting involved at the
Newman Center with other young Catholics at EWU!
What do you want to do for your career?
I want to become an Emergency Medical Technician, so my current plan is to attend Eastern, then finish my EMT certification. Ever since I was a
kid, I wanted to help people, and being an EMT seems to be a perfect way to do that. Working as an EMT will be different for me because I’ll be
“on the front lines.” I tend to like to serve behind the scenes, but I think I will like my line of work because I will get to help people one-on-one. I
decided not to become a nurse because I feel like I would have a lot more pressure managing multiple patients and reporting to doctors. I would
be sort of scared to speak up. As an EMT I can still be of service, but in a limited role. I picture myself always living in Gig Harbor and serving at St.
Nicholas, re-establishing my life here after college. I plan to come home over weekends and during breaks to help out.
Do you participate in other activities outside of school?
I’m very involved in the church, so I don’t do a lot of other after-school activities! I am here for all Holy Days and Holidays, and I practice for the
special Masses after school. I also work with Mark and Corinne McKibben to train altar servers. It’s a lot of fun for me. I like being behind the
scenes more than being up in the front! I would not like to be a lector. I couldn’t be out in front of people speaking like Fr. Mark!
Do you have a favorite saint?
I love St. Joan of Arc. I love that she was such a strong, independent woman. She spoke up for what she believed and was courageous, which is
something I look up to, especially since I tend to be shy.
MARCH 24, 2019 THIRD SUNDAY OF LENT PAGE 10Do you have a favorite Bible verse? “Do not fear, for I am with you, do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you, I will uphold you with my righteous hand.” (Isiah 41:10) How do you like to spend your time? I love hanging out with my friends and my family. I recently helped out with Confirmation classes and served on the crew for last year’s Confirmation retreat. I also served on the crew for the Encounter Junior Girls’ retreat at Bellarmine. “Encounter Crew” is the behind-the-scenes group of seniors who help make the retreat special for the junior retreatants. Crew members are never seen by the juniors. We spend the weekend in quiet service; setting up the rooms for the next event, preparing meals, leaving treats and surprises for the girls in their cabins, and making rosaries. We also give encouraging speeches to each other. Most importantly, throughout the entire retreat, there is a crew prayer chapel, and each crew member takes one hour praying for the retreatants, so that we are in constant vigil for them. The other girls on the crew were very religious, which inspired me. I became really close with my senior class, and I wasn’t expecting to have that. It’s very encouraging to spend time with other young people who really believe. During the final dinner, we serve a candlelight dinner silently to the retreatants. We wear brown monk robes and masks so that they can’t see our faces. Right as we were getting dressed, I accidentally stepped on my glasses and broke them! I had to serve the rest of the retreat partially blind, which gave me a whole new appreciation for Hebrews 11:1. “Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.” ☺ Have you ever had a time when you struggled with your faith? In fifth grade my grandmother passed away from pancreatic cancer, and just four days later, my grandfather passed away from heart failure. I was angry and confused. I had started altar serving in fourth grade, and after my grandparents passed, I got more and more involved in altar serving. Serving really helped me focus on something other than my grief and helped me keep my faith. My freshman year of high school, my Abuelo in Texas very suddenly passed away from a heart attack. In my head I thought, “There are so many worse people in the world. He was such a good man, why would you take him away from us, God?” Just in the same way that altar serving helped me, I started to shadow Mark as a Sacristan after my grandfather died and that really helped my faith so much. When you are miserable, it gives you a lift and takes your mind off your pain to do something good for others. Is there a time in your life or an experience you’ve had that you really noticed God’s hand working? The day my Abuelo passed away, I was in my freshman religion class. We were doing a prayer exercise, where our teacher asked us to envision an empty bowl and see what popped into the bowl for us to pray for. I envisioned two photographs side by side, one of my grandfather and one of my whole family without him in it. I came home and told my parents about my prayer experience, and what I had seen. They told me the shocking news that my grandfather had passed away at the very hour that I had envisioned him. Do you have any causes you care passionate about? I just want to help people. I think that’s what God wants from my life. My parents have given me a great example of serving others, and serving each other. When I was a little kid, we used to help at the soup kitchens and we would host a lot of big family dinners. We just love to be together. I want to be of service to people in my work and in my family. Who are some of your role models? My parents are my role models. My dad has always been very religious, ever since he was a kid. He’s very strong and kind, and more shy, like me. My mom didn’t grow up very religious. She was baptized, but when she met my dad, he really brought her in. She was actually just confirmed this past December, and I had the honor of being her confirmation sponsor! It was amazing because I got see her finally get really into her faith. Now that she’s really in, she loves it. She is always joking with us now that she is the authority on Catholicism. She will say to us, “Listen, I AM THE TEACHER.” ☺ She encourages us to go to church more often and we are a lot more involved. She’s amazing. She’s a very kind heart person. I also love Mark and Corinne McKibben, since I’ve seen them every Sunday for most of my life. They are very supportive of me, always interested in what I’m doing and how I’m doing. They’re very organized and dependable. I’m so thankful for the role they’ve played in my life. MARCH 24, 2019 THIRD SUNDAY OF LENT PAGE 11
