WELCOME
All of us at Providence Academy are so excited to invite you and your family to
experience a variety of enriching and fun experiences for students age 5 to those in
the high school Class of 2022. Participants do not need to be enrolled at Providence
Academy to participate and may register for one activity or several. The PALS Camp is an
excellent option for students, age 5 through entering grade 6, who want a full-day camp
experience.

We promote active learning in a safe and comfortable environment by providing quality
content, excellent instructors, and a focus on faith in God and moral character. Most
activities take place on the school’s beautiful 42-acre campus, conveniently located in
Plymouth, allowing students to take advantage of the outstanding available resources,
including a synthetic multi-sport field and state-of-the-art performing arts center.

Many of our programs reach enrollment capacity, so we encourage you to register as
soon as possible at www.providenceacademy.org/summer.

We look forward to being a part of your summer!

SOC Insect-Microbiome Antibiotic Bioprospecting Research
This Seeds of Change summer intensive workshop trains students to isolate antibiotic-producing bacteria that live
symbiotically on and within insects (100-1000 times more effective than on/within soils) using the same methods as
graduate-level researchers. In this course, students will learn how to: 1) isolate bacteria strains from insect samples,
2) establish isolate morphologies and other bioassay characteristics, 3) co-culture for antimicrobial inhibition against
antagonists, 4) use polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and electrophoresis to amplify and visualize genes, 5) analyze
16S rRNA gene sequence results and establish phylogenetic ancestry (MOLE-BLAST and MEGA), and 6) analyze whole-
genome sequencing results using antiSMASH to identify biosynthetic gene clusters (BGCs) that encode novel pathways
for secondary metabolites with potential medical applications.
