Young Blake Expeditions give young New Zealanders the opportunity to
continue the environmental work Sir Peter was so passionate about.
In February 2018, the ‘Young Blake Expeditions’ programme saw a group of young New
Zealanders voyage on board HMNZS Canterbury to the Kermadec Islands – one of the most
remote and biodiverse spots on the planet. Here, they worked alongside world-class scientists
and field experts on ongoing scientific research and projects. This untouched region has
much to teach New Zealand and the world about climate change and ocean health.
Thank you, your generous support of the Great Blake Race will go directly toward funding
the next expedition.

to Hobart, the Fastnet, numerous fleet racing regattas and the Red Bull Youth America’s Cup.

ENTRY AND REGISTRATION
Registration entry is via the Eastern (far) entrance of the Squadron at 12.30pm – upon
arrival you will be directed to the meeting area for your boat – for drinks and nibbles plus
the briefing, in the Squadron’s Ballroom.
EVENING GUESTS FROM 5PM
Entry is via the main entrance.
PARKING
We encourage you to catch taxis to the event where possible. If you bring your own vehicle
please park within the white lines.
WHAT IS THE DRESS CODE?
Smart casual throughout the event, it’s all about having fun.
WHAT DO I WEAR SAILING?
It’s always best to wear layers as the weather may change at any time, include a rain jacket,
sunscreen and soft non-marking soled shoes (please no high heels). Cap and sunglasses
are optional. Lifejackets will be provided and must be worn at all times while racing.
IS THERE SOMEWHERE SAFE THAT I CAN LEAVE BELONGINGS AT THE CLUB?
Yes, we have a dedicated coat check room in the main reception area with a Concierge.
DO I NEED TO DO ANYTHING ON THE BOAT OR KNOW HOW TO SAIL?
You can be as involved in sailing the boat as much or as little as you want to be or just sit
back and enjoy the sail on the gorgeous Auckland harbour.
Please remember that your skipper and crew have generously donated their time and
yacht in support of this event so we ask that you please be respectful and courteous whilst
onboard.
WHAT WILL THE EVENING PART OF THE EVENT BE LIKE?
Fun! It will be a vibrant party atmosphere with the ‘Great Blake Race’ prizegiving, live
music, live auction and premium food tasting stations with beverages to match. The idea is
to mix and mingle, have a dance and participate in the fundraising for two great causes -
buy a raffle ticket or three and bid on the silent and live auction items!

Building on the massive success of previous Charity Regatta’s
we are again partnering with the Sir Peter Blake Trust to raise
funds for the Sir Peter Blake Trust Young Blake Expeditions and
the RNZYS International Sailing Fund. Two important funds that
help talented youth take the next step on their leadership path
or to take their yachting careers to the international stage. We
are also working together on programmes to help us ‘protect our
oceans, together’.
We know you will enjoy the afternoon sailing on the Waitemata
Harbour followed by an evening of live music, amazing food
tasting stations, beverages and over $150,000 worth of auction
items up for grabs with some that you would simply describe
as MONEY CAN’T NORMALLY BUY!. Whether you are joining
friends, colleagues, or hosting clients to an afternoon of fun you
will also be joining some of New Zealand’s top businesses which
makes for a great networking opportunity.
There are several ways you are able to support this event and have fun in the process:

RNZN OVERNIGHT SEA-GOING EXPERIENCE

HMS Wellington to Waitangi on 2nd - 5th February 2018
Experience a snapshot of life as a sailor in the Royal New Zealand Navy with an overnight
excursion on HMNZS WELLINGTON in and around the Hauraki Gulf before travelling north to
Waitangi, Bay of Islands. You and 3 friends will depart Devonport Naval Base and spend the
whole day, night and next morning getting an insight into how a naval ship at sea operates. You
will be hosted by the Commanding Officer and Officers of WELLINGTON who will provide you
with a full ‘Naval Experience’ of life at sea.
This will include embarking for the ship’s ‘Family Day’ on Sunday 03 Feb at 0900 (sailing
at 1000) where they will proceed to sea in the Hauraki Gulf for a day at sea for families of
ship’s company to show them what the Navy gets up to (this includes demonstrations of ship
capability and things like damage control displays etc), then the ship will disembark families at
1500 at DNB and sail for Waitangi arriving Monday 04 Feb 19 at 1000.
The auction winners would then have the option of disembarking in Opua or remaining onboard to
attend the Chief of Navy hosted cocktail party onboard WELLINGTON that evening (from 1800)- rig
would be ‘semi-formal’ and attendees would need to be 18 years old or over due to alcohol restrictions.
If required the ship could then provide accommodation for that evening as accommodation
ashore is likely to be at a premium. The winners would then disembark Tuesday 05 Feb a.m.
and would need to make their own way back to Auckland (or wherever they choose to head!).
For Auction: Overnight sea-going experience on HMNZS Wellington for 4 people in and
around the Hauraki Gulf travelling north to Waitangi, Bay of Islands.
Conditions: Valid for departing Devonport Naval Base on February 2nd at approximately 9am

concrete art featuring an image of Sir Peter Blake. Created
by Ross Bannan with the support of the team at Jackson
Electrical, this piece was designed as part of his work for
the Grand Design TV Series.
The image is created with depressions in the concrete
which create the shadowed image, so the image itself
changes throughout the day depending on the direction
of the light. The mould is formed directly from the picture
of Sir Peter, and a rubber mould is take from this which
the concrete is poured into, creating this intriguing
concrete image.
