WEST AUCKLAND PERFORMING ARTS COMPETITIONS
Background: WAPAC was founded in 1990 by a committee of West Auckland based music and speech
teachers. The committee was led by Mrs. E Noffke who received a QSM in 2018 for services to music and
who continues as Secretary/Treasurer. The purpose of the competitions is to provide a small, supportive,
local performance opportunity for young, amateur music, speech and drama students.
General Rules and Conditions:
Please take time to read and understand the general rules and conditions carefully. By making an entry you
are indicating you have read and understood the rules and conditions for WAPAC and agree to adhere to
them.
How to Enter:
There are two options for entering the competitions:
1. Online
Our online form will help you to identify the right classes for your age

Entry forms are available in the printed version of the WAPAC syllabus. These can be posted to:

- Please ensure the contact details you provide on your entry are correct. WAPAC may need to contact
you during the course of the competitions.
- Entries made other than online or by post will not be accepted
- Entry fees will not be refunded unless WAPAC committee cancels a class
- Payment must be made at time of entry. The online form calculates the entry fee and provides details
of how to pay via internet banking

WAPAC will publish the competition programme on the website before the first competition date in June.
This will be updated as able. The programme will detail the date and time of your class and your competitor
number. Please review the programme and ensure the details are correct. Should you require a printed
programme posted to you please contact:

NB: There will be a nominal charge of $6.00 towards the cost of photocopying and postage.3
Competition Day Checklist
Ensure you know what day and approximate time you will be performing and what your competitor
number is.
Take a copy of the item you are performing for the judge to look at. This needs to be labelled with
your name, class and competitor number
Ensure you arrive at least 20 minutes prior to your performance time
Ensure you have organised an accompanist should you need one e.g. vocal, instrumental classes
TEACHERS DISCOUNT PASS - $20.00
WAPAC invites teachers to purchase a discount pass. This pass entitles the named teacher entry into all the
competition days during the 2020 WAPAC Festival with the exclusion of the Concerto Finals and Concert.
WAPAC appreciates the teaching communities’ ongoing support for our competitions.
Passes are available at the venue door on competition day for $20.00
GENERAL RULES AND CONDITIONS:
1. Competitors
These competitions are not open to professional performers. Professional is defined as a performer who by
qualification or experience has performance as their prime source of income and chosen career.
2. Age Limit
WAPAC’s focus is on competitors aged 20 years and under unless otherwise specifically stated. Age shall be
reckoned as at 1st May of the competition year. Age must be stated on the entry form. WAPAC reserves the
right to request a copy of a birth certificate or passport for proof of age.
3. Judges
Judges are selected by the WAPAC Committee. Communication with judges, either by competitors, teachers
or other interested parties, prior to or during competitions is prohibited. The Judge’s decision is final.
4. Classes
The committee reserves the right to cancel a class if there are less than three competitors.
5. Prizes
The judges can withhold, at their discretion, the first or any prize. When two competitors’ achieve “first equal”
the prize money for first and second is added together and divided equally between the two first equal winners.
No second prize is awarded. Third prize is awarded as usual.
6. Class Order/Timetables
Competitions will be conducted according to the timetable as set out in the programme.
7. Trophies
All trophies, where awarded, remain the property of West Auckland Performing Arts Competitions. Engraving
is the responsibility of the winner. They must be returned to WAPAC Secretary by the end of the year awarded.

Tel: 02734208684 8. Order of Performance Competitor’s names will appear in the programme in the order in which they compete. All competitors must arrive at least 20 minutes prior to the beginning of their class. Those not present at the beginning of their class may forfeit their right to compete. It is the Competitors responsibility to ensure accompanists are present in time for their performance. The Competitor may not be able to compete should the accompanist not be present. 9. Prompting No prompting or assistance may be rendered during a performance except by the judge. 10. Accompanists WAPAC doesn’t provide an accompanist. It is a performer’s responsibility to provide an accompanist in consultation with their teacher. 11. Own Selection The title of all selected items must be noted on the entry form. Competitors must provide a copy of their item to the door keeper on arrival. There are no facilities for photocopying at the venue. This copy must have the Competitors name, class and performance order number on it. Copies must be collected on completion of the class. Uncollected copies will be recycled at the end of the competitions. 12. Time Limit Unless otherwise stated the time limit for entering the stage, tuning/set up if required, performing and exiting the stage is a maximum of 4 minutes unless specifically stated. Timing will be monitored by the judge and failure to comply with this may result in the competitor losing marks or being disqualified. 13. Duets Competitors may not appear twice in the same duet class even if they have a different partner/piece. Both names must appear on the entry form along with the title of the duet. 14. Competitors Competitors may not perform the same item in more than one class 15. Properties No heavy props will be allowed, light props will be permitted at the discretion of the Stage Manager 16. Stage Access No person other than officials will be allowed back stage or at the sides of the stage 17. Restricted Classes These classes are open to competitors who have not at the time of making the entry won a first prize in the nominated class at WAPAC or any similar competition. 18. Camera and Video Recordings Audience members may photograph or record the individual they are supporting only e.g. child/relative or student WAPAC Committee reserves the right to request audience members to cease filming should it be distracting or interfere with the Judges ability to mark the competitor. WAPAC Committee welcomes the opportunity to support school based assessment e.g. NCEA and a written request for assistance can be made via the WAPAC web site. 19. Changes to Entry Competitors must identify the item they are performing at the time of entry.

Requests to change an item once the entry has been completed must be made in writing to
wapac2019@gmail.com providing a reason for the change. WAPAC Committee cannot guarantee the change
will be included in either the online or printed programme. There will be an administrative charge of $10.00
applied to each change requested.
20. Programmes
Programmes can be downloaded from the website free of charge or are available for sale from WAPAC. All
competitors must have access to a programme in order to know the day, time and order of their performance.
Late entries may not appear in a printed programme therefore performance order needs to be discussed with
the committee.

21. Music for Performance
Candidates must use original published musical score/ text or an authorised copy for performance purposes.
Photocopied pages of musical score may be used to accommodate an awkward page turn only. Candidates
may not use an IPad or similar for performance purposes. IPads or similar and photocopies may only be used
by an accompanist.
22. Mobile Phones and IPads/Tablets
WAPAC Committee requests that all electronic devices are on silent or turned off during the competitions so
as not to interrupt the performance.
23. Photos taken by WAPAC
WAPAC may take photos of prize winners for promotional purposes. Please contact a Committee member at
the competition venue should you not want your child photographed.
24. Classes with Heats
Where the class requires heats before finals the Judge will recall a maximum of three competitors. The Judge
reserves the right to recall less than three competitors should their performances not meet the required
standard.
The Judge’s decision is final.
25. Complaints Process
Complaints may be made to WAPAC Committee in writing, by the competitor’s teacher. This must be
completed within 48 hours of the competition occurring. WAPAC Committee will respond in writing to the
music teacher within 10 working days.6

2020 Concerto for Piano - Mozart K459 F major - 1st Movement & Cadenza
Aotea Youth Symphony Inc.
Formed in 1987 the Aotea Youth Symphony Orchestra now has a playing strength of
71 members ranging in age from 11 years to 26 years.
A training orchestra was established in 1993.
The orchestra features regularly in summer concerts.
The objective of the orchestra is to provide for young instrumentalists beyond that
provided by the school orchestras.
Repertoire of the orchestra is wide ranging and includes classical works, lighter pieces, and selections from
popular shows.
The orchestra’s patron is Dame Kiri Te Kanawa.
The orchestra is supported by a very active group of parents and community helpers.

Candidates prepare a test song selected by the WAPAC Committee in partnership with the
Aotea Youth Symphony. The adjudicator will recall a maximum of 3 competitors who give
outstanding performances. The adjudicator reserves the right to recall less competitors if the
appropriate standard isn’t met. The contest will be conducted with piano accompaniment up to
the point when finalists are selected. Singers must supply their own accompanist.18
