There are few moments on the water where I’ve experienced something so profound. Usually when
I paddle in my free time, it’s to relax and find a sense of calm. But in Antarctica, I experienced an
adrenaline rush from the seat of my kayak like never before. Following our guide through a channel of
icebergs, everything was exceptionally quiet—that Antarctic silence our Expedition Team tells us about,
where you feel you’re the only humans for miles. The only sound was that of our paddles dipping softly
in the water. Then, as we approached open water, the stillness started to dissipate and the mood slightly
changed. Suddenly, our guide spotted a dark shape in the water ahead and signaled that it could be a
whale. We kept our distance—for both ours and the animal’s safety—hoping it would surface so we could
get a better view. We weren’t disappointed. With our expert guide beside us, it was a thrilling moment.

Quark Expeditions has partnered with Penguin Watch, an organization that monitors the
threats to penguin populations through time-lapse cameras. We’ve provided logistical support
and transportation for field scientists to Antarctica since 2010. Here are two you can meet:
, DR. TOM HART
Penguinologist, Penguin Watch,
Oxford University
Dr. Tom Hart runs the Penguin Watch
project at Oxford University, through
which he monitors Antarctic wildlife
using camera recording, volunteer
photos and population genetics.
His PhD, earned at Imperial College
and the British Antarctic Survey,
involved investigating penguin foraging
behavior around South Georgia.
Dr. Hart loves penguins and the world’s
cold places and is passionate about
protecting them.
, DR. MIKE POLITO
Penguinologist, Penguin Watch,
Louisiana State University (LSU)
Dr. Mike Polito is an assistant professor
at LSU and an investigator on the
Penguin Watch research project. He has
more than 14 years of experience living
and working in field camps, research
stations and aboard ships in Antarctica
monitoring Antarctic wildlife using
camera trapping, stable isotopes, and
population genetics. He believes in
protecting the world’s wild places and
making science accessible to everyone.
