        The town of Guildford boasts a wide range of attractions
        and activities to entertain.
        Why not take one of the free guided walks and discover the town’s
        fascinating past, walking in the footsteps of famous former inhabitants
        like George Abbot, Lewis Carroll and Alan Turing? You can explore
        many historic buildings like the Castle, Museum and Guildford House
        Gallery (where the Tourist Information Centre is located) and visit
        historic churches and an imposing twentieth century cathedral.
        There are a huge variety of shops, restaurants and pubs ranging from

        entertained by visiting our theatres, cinema or live music venues.

George Abbot, Archbishop of Canterbury, founded Abbot’s Hospital in 1619.
Much of the building remains unchanged. Many original features are still
in place. A guided tour reveals 17th century stained glass in the Chapel,
original furniture in the panelled Common Hall, wonderful architecture and
beautifully maintained courtyard gardens. Our new Exhibition provides
additional insight into the history of this unique building. Tours are available
at 11am from May to September on Thursdays and Fridays.

             Guildford has been attracting visitors for many years. With so
             much to see and do, it can be tricky knowing where to start but
             don’t worry, we’re here to help!

             TOWN CENTRE
             Start your visit in the town centre with a hearty breakfast
             at one of our much-loved independent cafés.

             Head to the Castle grounds for a relaxing stroll. Take in
             the vibrant flower beds, climb to the top of the Great
             Tower for breath-taking panoramic views of Guildford
             and don’t forget to find Alice Through the Looking Glass
             in the secret garden before you go.

             Next peruse the shops before popping into one of the many traditional English pubs for
             a tasty lunchtime treat. Remember to visit the Tourist Information Centre for postcards,
             gifts and souvenirs!

             In the afternoon, join one of our award-winning town guides for a guided walk. Find
             out about the town’s fascinating history and famous past inhabitants (regular free walks
             operate from May to September, otherwise booking is required – see page 9). You can
             round off the afternoon with a delightful riverside walk along the Wey.

             For dinner, the choice is endless. With nearly every cuisine imaginable pick from
             independent restaurants to the well-known chains. Turn to page 20 for a list of eateries.

             Finally, to end the day catch a pre West End performance at the Yvonne Arnaud Theatre,
             a show at G Live or try one of our more intimate venues for a choice of comedy, shows
             and live music.

             GUILDFORD AND THE SURROUNDING AREA
             Whether you have your own car, or travelling via public transport, Guildford has all the
             ingredients for a perfect day out. Start at Guildford Cathedral’s Refectory for a delicious
             breakfast before taking in the Cathedral’s inspirational 20th Century architecture. Whilst
             you are there why not join one of the tower tours for spectacular views of Guildford?
             Then head to Watts Gallery, a unique art gallery in a picturesque setting. Discover stunning
             Victorian paintings and sculpture or learn about the lives of G F and Mary Watts. Before you
             leave, treat yourself to lunch in the Tea Shop and wander over to the nearby Watts Chapel.
             Next stop is Albury, a small village, home to one of our many local vineyards. Enjoy a tipple
             at Albury Vineyard, walk along the North Downs Way up to Newlands Corner and admire
             the views over the Surrey Hills (Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty). In the distance you’ll
             see the spire on Shere Church, follow this to the quintessentially English village of Shere
             where you can wander the pretty lanes before stopping for an indulgent afternoon tea.

Parks
      Guildford is surrounded by beautiful award-winning parks and
      countryside, to be enjoyed all year round: from riverside strolls
      along the Wey to colourful woodland walks in Chantry Woods, not
      forgetting the stunning viewpoints at St Martha’s Hill.
      Stoke Park provides a green space at the edge of the Town Centre, boasting sports
      pitches, pitch and putt, along with an enclosed play park, boating lake and paddling
      pool to provide a cool spot to relax and play on a hot summer’s day. Alternatively
      escape the bustle of the High Street by visiting the many green spaces such as
      Castle Grounds, Westnye Gardens, Quakers Acre and Allen House Grounds.
      Beyond the town centre, discover local industrial heritage on a trail at
      Chilworth’s Gunpowder Mills, or set off on a ramble from Pewley Down to
      Newlands Corner along a section of the North Downs Way.

        The county of Surrey is home to numerous
        attractions guaranteed to keep the whole family
        entertained.
        Animals from the familiar farm variety to the exciting and
        exotic can be viewed (and sometimes interacted with!).
        If you are interested in transport, you will find plenty to keep
        you amused in fascinating museums of cars, planes, buses or
        the waterways.
        Garden enthusiasts are spoilt for choice here as there are
        landscape gardens, arboretums and the Royal Horticultural
        Society’s flagship garden situated in the county. Some gardens
        are also attached to historic houses so the visitor can delight in
        both stunning interiors and magnificent outdoor spaces.
        Guildford’s neighbouring towns offer many excursion
        opportunities, so whether you are browsing in Dorking’s
        antique quarter or visiting the shops and galleries in Farnham,
        you are sure to find something of interest in the historic

Chawton House was known to Jane Austen as the Great House, as it was
owned by her brother Edward. Jane lived in a cottage on his estate and
would dawdle away many an hour in the grand Elizabethan manor and
