From the Parochial Administrator: Father Andy Jaspers “You are my beloved Son; with You I am well pleased.” -Luke 3:22 I am greatly blessed to be with you this Christmastide. The mystery of Christmas is so wonderful that we can appreciate it from many sides. He is born of Mary and begotten of the Father. Today, we hear the Father affirming Jesus’ sonship in company with our patron, St. John the Baptist. We who are bap- tized should hear those same words addressed to us as adopted sons and daughters of God: “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.” Two weeks ago, we accompanied the shepherds who were invited to visit Jesus in his first days. Con- sider their lives. They were neither educated, nor religious. They had almost the lowest status in socie- ty. Their lives would consist mostly of counting sheep and wondering if it was going to rain. Into the boredom of their wandering lives, an angel from God appears! The highest creature meets the lowliest humans in an obscure place. They would have thought that such news would be announced in a palace or the Temple. But they are the first to hear the news! And they are invited to meet the king of the world in person. Years ago, I experienced God entering my restlessness and giving me the courage to seek priesthood. I felt called to priesthood from a young age as I experienced greater peace and joy at Mass than any- where else. In my last year of college, I took a single apartment to see if I could live alone well. A priest has an aloneness that is different from a married person. The first semester did not go well. I found that I was mostly lonely, and was trying to fill up every minute with restless activity. Over January, I went on an eight-day silent retreat to test my call. In the first meeting with my spiritu- al advisor I told him that my retreat was highly productive. I was reading St. Augustine’s Confessions and receiving a new insight every minute. He said that that was nice, but that I would have to put the book down for the retreat, since the retreat was about my spiritual life, and not St. Augustine’s. On the second day of the retreat, I was pretty sure I didn’t want to be a priest. On the fourth day, I did again. On the fifth day, I finished two morning holy hours and had just completed journaling the sec- ond one. It was about ten o’clock in the morning. It was too early to eat lunch. I looked at the books again and thought about reading, but I wanted to listen to my spiritual advisor’s advice. I thought to get a cup of coffee but remembered that I had already had four cups. With nothing left to do, I waited. I thought that if my restless activity stopped, I would encounter a deep loneliness at the depth of my heart. Instead, once I surrendered the restlessness, I felt a strong, intense love arising from the depth of my heart. I knew then that when I fully surrender myself to God, then I can meet Him. I knew from that moment on that I could be a happy priest, and never truly be alone. Jesus calls you imaginatively to enter the waters with Him today. You need not bring anything with you. He comes to us in our weakness, and our task is to humbly accept Him and the great joy that He offers us. Open yourself to His joy and pray that all people can know the joy of union with Him. That my joy may be in you, and your joy may be complete, Father Andy Jaspers
Restored to Wholeness! Baptisms at SJB! In addition to celebrating the birthday of Jesus, the Walker and Turnbull families in our parish and school community celebrated birth of new life in the Sacrament of Baptism on Sunday, December 26. The March for Life will be preceded by a prayer service at the St. Paul Cathedral from 10:30 am to 11:30 am. St. John’s will be providing a charter bus to these events on the 22nd.
