Editor’s Letter
Sustaining and strengthening gains
WE’RE sure the entire value chain will find this fourth edition of the Label Printing
Directory (LPD) helpful. Not only does it include a comprehensive glossary of
technical printing terms, it’s formatted to allow label buyers easy access to listings
of label printers and descriptions of their particular specialities, and to suppliers
of label applicating equipment. In addition, at a glance, printers/converters can
pinpoint major suppliers of printing and converting technologies and consumables
A variety of complex printing technologies need to co-exist in the narrow-web market as
label converters respond to supply chain, economic and technological changes. First, the
trend towards shorter runs, along with customer expectations of higher quality and faster
delivery times, continues unabated.
Second, competition becomes increasingly intense as existing converters use ever-
evolving equipment and software technologies to improve performance levels, and
new players with wider-web or sheetfed capabilities enter the fray. Converters are also
diversifying beyond label production into the production of folding cartons and flexible
packaging and responding to brand owners’ requests for value addition by offering
innovative decorative and tactile elements.
Third, the convergence of markets, global economic slowdowns and resultant dips
in consumer demand – in combination with the digitalisation of printing, converting and
logistical processes – requires a change in perspective from seeing threats to spotting
opportunities. This changed perspective, alongside technology investments, will enable
converters to offer improved levels of quality, productivity and flexibility – challenging in
a locally price-sensitive market.
Companies are also placing increasing emphasis on return on investment and
lifecycle-oriented calculations as Industry 4.0 automation capabilities transform the
labelling and packaging print sectors.
Hybrid printing is also gaining momentum as converters seek to combine digital and
conventional technologies in more streamlined configurations.
Focus on sustainability
In 2020, enhancing sustainability will continue as a key driver for brand owners, packaging
manufacturers, retailers and consumers, prompting close value chain collaboration in
terms of developing raw materials, substrates and workflows to meet circular economy
criteria.
Efficient collaboration will allow role players to plan product development in order
to reduce costs and improve the functionality of sustainable packaging. They will also
need to work together on educating the market around cost drivers and the benefits of
improvements to heighten demand.
Sustainability pressures are also likely to drive the move to digital printing even further,
as brand owners (hopefully including retailers) start targeting the reduction of write-offs
for unused packaging and labelling inventory. A more responsible approach will require all
links in the supply chain to respond to an increasingly ‘just-in-time’ form of delivery, with
short lead times and minimum inventories.
2020 is sure to be filled with many progress reports and product introductions, especially
as the world’s largest packaging and printing industry trade shows, Interpack and drupa,
both take place in Düsseldorf, Germany in May and June respectively.

This means the chip and the substrate are directly combined to transfer heat directly to the
substrate. The core optical design scheme effectively increases peak intensity of the spectrum
to at least 120-200% of the 365nm band of the mercury lamp. At the same time, the light output
can be effectively formed into a uniform continuous spot strip.
CoolUV products also offer exceptional temperature control and efficient heat dissipation,
greatly improving light efficiency, chip life and product reliability. Each CoolUV product
undergoes simulated thermal, optical and hydrodynamic quality tests before shipping.
CoolUV lamps can be used on almost any printing press, whether offset, flexo, silkscreen,
inkjet or gravure and are perfectly suited for the labelling industry. CoolUV is suitable for
heat-sensitive materials and allows labelling on more diverse materials.
