Alpbach Speakers’ Library is open to all. Furthermore you find a daily sortiment of books
for sale (provided by Wagner’sche).

Immerse yourself in the philosophical way of thinking, body and mind: we will have a
spacious pool ready for you on the roof of the Congress Centre. In it, you will find 25,000
black balls, each of them printed with an aphorism from the School of Stoicism. Our
contemporary take on an antique thermal bath throws into relief the fast pace of the
Forum. Here, you will find a place to linger and contemplate, a space for open discourse!
Mit Körper und Geist in die Gedankenwelt der Philosophie eintauchen: Dafür steht auf
dem Dach des Congress Centrums ein geräumiges Becken bereit. Dieses ist mit über 25.000
schwarzen Bällen gefüllt, von denen jeder mit einer Stoikerweisheit bedruckt ist. Unsere
zeitgenössische Variante einer antiken Therme setzt einen Kontrapunkt zum Alpbach-
Rhythmus. Hier haben Sie Platz zum Verweilen und einen Raum für Diskussionen!

The Last Days of Mankind / Die letzten Tage der Menschheit
World War I led to fundamental changes in Europe and the world. No author captured
the mood in contemporary Austria more painstakingly than Karl Kraus in his play ‘The
Last Days of Mankind’. Artist Deborah Sengl reacts to Kraus’s text with unmistakable
flair and conjures up the protagonists of his play in a whole new guise: around 200
stuffed rats appear in 42 individual scenes. Using this device, Sengl achieves a connec-
tion between history, literature, art and the present.
Der Erste Weltkrieg veränderte Europa und die Welt grundlegend. Kein anderer Autor hat
die Stimmung der damaligen Zeit so präzise eingefangen wie Karl Kraus in „Die letzten
Tage der Menschheit“. Die Künstlerin Deborah Sengl reagiert mit unverwechselbarem Ge-
spür auf Kraus’ Text und gibt den ProtagonistInnen seines Werks eine völlig neue Gestalt:
Rund 200 präparierte weiße Ratten erscheinen in 42 Einzelszenen. Auf diese Weise gelingt
Sengl die Verbindung von Geschichte, Literatur und Kunst mit der Gegenwart.

PREHAB European Forum Alpbach
Hanna Burkart and Philipp Furtenbach have been living without a permanent home
for years. They have lived in 16 different locations and more than 150 places, always en-
gaged in the present and future developments of the very same. Now they are moving
their place of residence to Alpbach: outsiders who temporarily become locals and who
reflect the events at the European Forum Alpbach.
Hanna Burkart und Philipp Furtenbach leben seit zwei Jahren ohne fixen Wohnort. Sie
bewohnten bereits 16 Orte und mehr als 150 Plätze, mit deren Gegenwart und zukünftigen
Entwicklungen sie sich beschäftigten. Nun verlegen sie ihren Lebensmittelpunkt nach
Alpbach: Um als Außenstehende temporär einheimisch zu werden und das Geschehen des
Europäischen Forums Alpbach zu reflektieren.

200 stuffed white rats in the Kunst-Foyer of the Congress Centre: this is the striking re-
action of artist Deborah Sengl to Karl Kraus’s seminal play, 'The Last Days of Mankind'.
In the presence of Deborah Sengl, the curator Günther Oberhollenzer will introduce
her artwork while the young trombonist Christian Masser will give a musical introduc-
tion. They will share with the audience a curiosity for contemporary art that confronts
history and literature and addresses the most pressing issues of our day and age.
Mit 200 präparierten weißen Ratten im Kunst-Foyer des Congress Centrums Alpbach
reagiert die Künstlerin Deborah Sengl auf Karl Kraus’ bahnbrechendes Stück “Die letzten
Tage der Menschheit”. Der Kurator Günther Oberhollenzer und der junge Posaunist Chris-
tian Masser führen in Anwesenheit der Künstlerin inhaltlich und musikalisch in ihr Werk
ein. Sie machen neugierig auf zeitgenössische Kunst, die sich der Geschichte und Literatur

in a unique 24-hour reading in the library of the hotel Böglerhof. Immerse yourself in
Kraus’s kaleidoscopic world and become a part of this literary memorial and monument.

regard for Karl Kraus, the comedian will examine the condition of that strange creature,

the contemporary tendency to polarise rather than to discuss, to separate rather than to con-

vision of today’s world. This year’s European Forum Alpbach will be one of the protagonists.

City sightseeing as a computer game: An armed task force is guided through a postapocalyptic New York in a multiplayer
shooter game. Operation Jane Walk is an online performance that isn’t so much about shooting stuff up as it is about

lustige bemühen sich um ein Foto oder Selfie mit dem Symbol der Macht im Hintergrund. Bresnan und Lucas, bei VIS
2017 mit The Rabbit Hunt gleich doppelt erfolgreich, verblüffen mit der subtilen Beobachtung eines
wunderlichen Spektakels.
Palm Beach International Airport has become an attraction ever since President Donald Trump started using it as a parking
space for Air Force One on his regular trips to Mar-aLago. Countless cars stop by the roadside, onlookers try to snap a photo
or a selfie with this symbol of power in the background. Bresnan and Lucas, who have been doubly successful at VIS 2017
with The Rabbit Hunt , leave us baffled with this subtle observation of a weird
spectacle.

The Burden is as surprising as it is funny, as sonically relishing as it is intelligent. The most astonishing thing about it: It’s a
stop-motion puppet musical! The protagonists: anthropomorphic animals telling audiences about their worlds, singing in
canon, and tap-dancing. Their depressing reality as hotel, call-center, supermarket, or diner employees oscillates between
isolated reclusion, grandiose dreams, and neoliberal promises of salvation.

200 stuffed white rats: this is the striking reaction of artist Deborah Sengl to Karl
Kraus’s seminal play, ‘The Last Days of Mankind’. In the presence of Deborah Sengl, the
curator Günther Oberhollenzer will introduce her artwork while the young trombonist
Christian Masser will give a musical introduction.
Mit 200 präparierten weißen Ratten reagiert die Künstlerin Deborah Sengl auf Karl Kraus’
bahnbrechendes Stück „Die letzten Tage der Menschheit“. Der Kurator Günther Oberhol-
lenzer und der junge Posaunist Christian Masser führen in Anwesenheit der Künstlerin
inhaltlich und musikalisch in ihr Werk ein.

Doris Uhlich’s ‘Every Body Electric’ marks the beginning of this year’s Health Sym-
posium. Joined on stage by people with physical disabilities, the artist will conjure
up individual and collective ‘energetic icons’. This performance is a pared-down but
radical invitation to explore potentials through the medium of dance. It will enable the
audience to immerse itself in a kind of energetic archaeology. What possibilities emerge
when machines such as wheelchairs are taken to be extensions of the body?
Doris Uhlich eröffnet mit „Every Body Electric“ die Gesundheitsgespräche 2018 und lässt gemein-
sam mit Menschen mit physischen Beeinträchtigungen individuelle und gemeinschaftliche „Ener-
gietanzformen“ („energetic icons“) entstehen. Die Performance ist eine schlichte, aber radikale
Einladung, tänzerisch Potenziale zu erforschen. Sie ermöglicht es dem Publikum, in eine energeti-
sche Archäologie einzutauchen. Welche Möglichkeiten eröffnen sich, wenn Maschinen - wie etwa
Rollstühle - als Körpererweiterung begriffen und auch als solche inszeniert werden?

‘The world has its own life, and as an author, you do not only write about what is
happening on a daily basis but about all those things that are much bigger. And those
things also last longer.’ The American writer, Pulitzer prize recipient and Nestroy
award-winner Ayad Akhtar has written the piece ‘Jasinder, Naveed, Tariq’ for the Politi-
cal Symposium. He enters into a poetic dialogue with society and the world. Experts
from political theory and practice will complement his contribution by reflecting on the
changing nature and structure of global power relations.
„Die Welt hat ihr eigenes Leben, und als Autor schreibt man nicht über das Tagesgesche-
hen, sondern über etwas, das größer ist. Und das ist länger gültig.“ Der amerikanische
