Arts in Schools, 2004
For over 30 years, the Arts Council/an Chomhairle Ealaíon has supported the arts within formal
education – both directly, through schemes and residencies and, indirectly, through funding the
education and outreach programmes of arts organisations.
New and revised curricula in primary and second-level schools have strengthened the place of
the arts in education. As a result, an increasing number of arts organisations are becoming
involved in education programmes. The Arts Council encourages and supports collaboration
between arts organisations, artists and schools as a means of enriching young people’s artistic
and aesthetic education. We also value the positive contribution this collaboration makes to the
work of the artist and the teacher.
To support and promote collaborations between artists, arts organisations and schools, the Arts
Council published, last year, a directory of organisations running arts-in-schools programmes,
Supporting Arts in Education. This addressed the information gap between the arts and
education communities regarding the work in schools of arts organisations.
The directory was popular with artists, educators and administrators, who use it as a practical
resource in setting up new projects and relationships. To maintain the momentum and to keep
the information up-to-date, we have again compiled this directory for 2004. Arts in Schools,
2004 lists an additional 40 arts organisations working in schools, reflecting both the increase in
arts-in-schools activity and its changing nature.
We are currently looking into the possibility of transforming this directory into an online
interactive database, which would be searchable and updateable.
We welcome your comments and suggestions for improving this service. You can fill in the
evaluation form on our website or email your comments to Sarah Bannan, Local Arts Services
Officer, at sarah.bannan@artscouncil.ie. Thank you for your comments and suggestions in
relation to last year’s directory, which informed the production of this year’s publication.

About the Arts in Schools 2004 directory The information in this directory comes directly from the arts sector, with each organisation describing its arts-in-schools programming in its own words. The directory was compiled from questionnaires sent in March to all organisations in receipt of Arts Council revenue funding in 2004, seeking information about their arts-in-schools activities, if any. Local authority arts officers and the Council of National Cultural Institutions were also surveyed. The document is presented in two parts. Part One summarises the information in a series of overviews – by county, by artform and by age range. We hope that this makes the directory more accessible and easier for readers to locate an organisation in their area, working with a particular education level or an artform of interest, and so on. Part Two presents the information in detail; it lists all the organisations surveyed, along with appropriate contact details and their own descriptions of their arts-in-schools programming. The Arts Council is constantly responding to requests for information and advice relating to arts in schools from individual artists, arts organisations, schools and others. As an artist working or hoping to work in schools, you may wish to contact the Arts Council and find out how we can help support your work in education settings. The Arts Council offers financial supports for artists through grants to individual artists or groups of artists. Information on and application forms for these grants can be found in the Council’s practical guide, Supports for Artists. This explains how to apply for awards, how awards are assessed, the objectives of each award and who is eligible to apply. To get your copy of Supports for Artists, contact the Arts Council by telephone on 01 618 0200, by email at artistsservices@artscouncil.ie, or see www.artscouncil.ie. numerous organisations work outside their local area and indicated whether their work
programmes brought them in touch with people at regional or national levels. This is indicated
by the abbreviations in brackets after their names: N = national, R = regional and L = local.
