COVID-19 Recovery Plan
September 2020 to December 2020Woodlands School COVID-19 Recovery Plan – September 2020 to July 2021
Introduction
On 19th June 2020 the government announced their National Tutoring Programme aimed at supporting schools across England with a £350
million package to set about catching up pupils on lost learning throughout lockdown. The funding is aimed at disadvantaged pupils as it is
estimated that 80% of disadvantaged pupils do not have access to quality tuition. It is unclear yet exactly how the funding will be distributed but
it is our understanding that up to 75% of each one to one and small group tutoring session will be covered by this money.
At present we pay £21 an hour for a small number of Year 10 disadvantaged youngsters to have remote tutoring, one to one, with an
undergraduate in either Maths, English or Science, once a week for 10 weeks through MyTutor. This is the company the government has been
using in parts of the North as a trial for this scheme. We also use private tutors to lead one to one tutoring sessions on a weekly basis on the core
subjects with each of our Looked After Children, this costs £30 an hour.
The key to successful tuition is having clear communication between the tutor and the classroom teacher, to really focus on the key aspects of
learning either missed out on or not fully understood. We know that with specialist tuition is can make up to 5 months progress in 12 weeks if
tuition occurs for one hour a week.
We will look to use technology to increase access as we know that over 200 of our youngsters do not have access to the internet or a laptop or
computer to complete their work. This will be addressed by the middle of September 2020 ensuring all have access to remote learning supporting
our whole school push for memory retrieval and metacognition.
As in recent years we will be extending the school day both at the beginning and end to utilise as much learning time as possible. This will take
place through targeted interventions using morning enhancement – 8.30am-9.00am each morning as well as period 6 lessons from 3.00pm-
4.00pm on a weekly basis; aimed initially at Year 11 and 10 pupils.
Literacy and Oracy will be a priority for all our youngsters and we will set out how we can catch our pupils up on these vital foundations on which
all other learning is built upon.
There is £650 million for schools to use as additional funds to catch up on lost learning in other ways which is to be at the discretion of each
individual Head Teacher. Whilst welcome this works out £28k per school. Given catch up funding been taken away which for Woodlands School,
which amounted to £34k this year, we are operating at a loss before we start.

Supporting great teaching
Targets:
To embed the ‘Thinking School’ model to help support the development of metacognitive skills and aid the catch up of lost learning.
To launch Retrieval At Woodlands (RAW) to address gaps in learning and encourage memory retrieval through regular subject specific
opportunity to interleave spaced learning practice.
To ensure that NQTS/RQTS have a personalised provision to account for premature end to training provision.
To ensure all lessons are effectively planned to rapidly address gaps in learning.
To build the confidence of staff in their teaching, some of which may have been detrimentally affected by lockdown, and share good
practice.
To ensure our Remote Provision is outstanding, should it be required in the future, to minimise any further disruption to learning.
Pupil assessment and feedback
Targets:
To ensure assessments take place in the first half-term of the new academic year to gather more details of missed learning to inform
forward planning.
To ensure that all teaching staff utilise the first half-term in September 2020 to reteach the key skills and content in every subject based
on all the information we had gathered during lockdown; based on their interim Schemes of Learning staff have been working on since
Easter.

One to one and small group tuition
Targets:
To ensure a clear programme is in place for one to one and small group tuition for the start of the academic year for all underachieving
disadvantaged pupils and for all underachieving pupils to receive support, with a particular focus on disadvantaged pupils.
To ensure appropriate staffing (internal and external), rooming and expectations are in place.
To ensure all identified pupils have caught up on their lost learning.
Intervention programmes
Strategic Targets:
To ensure additional targeted interventions are in place supporting Year 10 and 11 pupils, including earlier starts.
To ensure additional interventions are in place for Year 7 and 8 pupils, including earlier starts.
To promote Reading and account for detrimental impact of lockdown by ensuring all opportunities both within and outside of the
curriculum are exploited.
To promote Oracy and account for detrimental impact of Lockdown by ensuring all opportunities both within and outside of the
curriculum are exploited.
Page 4 of 66Woodlands School COVID-19 Recovery Plan – September 2020 to July 2021
Supporting parents and carers
Targets:
To ensure that parents are well informed to support pupils working remotely in the event of a future lockdown.
To educate parents about ‘Memory Retrieval’ and Metacognition so they can support the school in ‘closing the gap’ caused by COVID-
19.
To support parents in aiding their children with Literacy and Oracy which may have been detrimentally impacted as a result of COVID-
19.
Access to technology
Targets:
To ensure that all pupils have access to Wi-Fi as well as a laptop or computer to engage with all remote learning.
Summer support

Context
Throughout lockdown staff have been working incredibly hard and have set work remotely through our Show My Homework (SMHW) platform
which have been using for 5 years to set homework as well as paper based work for those who do not have access to the internet.
We know from our monitoring of SMHW, as well as our regular calls to vulnerable pupils and weekly tutor calls, that there is a significant
proportion of our youngsters that have failed to consistently engage with the remote learning that has been set; this is despite the best efforts of
staff. We know that this is a similar picture across the country but given that the community we serve is one of significant deprivation; currently
standing at 42% PPG and rising daily given the pandemic, we need to catch up on the lost learning in a clear, structured and impactful way.
Mini-assessments have been set and marked every two weeks by every teacher since Easter. This is to ascertain where pupils are with regard to
the understanding of their remote learning. This will help us further understand the gaps that need to be addressed and we have been working
on Interim Schemes of Learning since Easter to utilise the first half-term in September to put in place additional assessments as well as a clear
programme to catch up on the missed learning or key subjects and concepts. Whilst we accept that this will not close the significant gap left by
Covid-19, staff have been informed that the time dedicated in the first half term would only play part of the catch up provision.
From 22nd June face to face meetings with Year 10 pupils were conducted for a week to ascertain learning needs and gaps. These were 15 minute
sessions that then led to another week of face to face meetings with subject specialists to tackle key misunderstood elements of chosen subjects
following the structure of one to one tutor sessions. For the final two weeks of term, Year 10 pupils have been offered three hours of teaching in
the core subjects of Maths, English and Science every day. This has helped us gain more information on learning needs of our Year 10 youngsters
which has helped inform future planning.
This document is based on the recommendations included in the ‘COVID-19 support guide for schools’ produced by the Education Endowment
Foundation June 2020.

Transition support
Targets:
To ensure that all pupils are inducted back to the school given the time spent out of a formal education setting.
To update whole school pastoral policies, with new rules and procedures, and communicate clearly and consistently to staff, pupils and
parent/carers. Demonstrating reasonable and proportionate expectations in response to COVID-19.
To ensure high levels of engagements from our previously hard to reach pupils and families, in regards to attendance and punctuality.
To use a targeted approach to meet the needs of individuals within our school.
To maintain a sense of community cohesion within year groups and across the school.
To ensure all pupils are clear on the expectations for their return and are clear as to what school will look like come September through
the use of a ‘Welcome Back’ video.
To ensure all new Year 7 pupils get the opportunity to speak to their tutor and ask any questions before they start at Woodlands through
a remote ‘Meet the Tutor’ event.
To ensure all Year 7 and 8 pupils keep up to date with their catch up English and Maths homework tasks through additional form time
support from the Progress Mentor team.
To utilise Catch Up intervention programmes, such as Lexonik with pupils in Key Stage 3 to ensure they have the literacy skills to manage
curriculum demands.
