Hear from our Learners

I’d say "Do it because at I highly recommend this
first you may think it’s an course. It's not too long nor
average college but it’s a whole too short, you will be whole-
family. You come here thinking somely supported throughout the
‘I’m just going to learn maths and entirety of the course. The groups are
English’ but you learn so much more. As not large, people are always friendly and
there’s a small amount of people and so you welcoming so if you're worried about
come out of your shell. If people are meeting new people this isn't alike to a big
considering Study Plus they should class where groups segregate, everyone
100% do it, the tutors are extremely supports each other, and I guarantee
accepting. It’s the best thing I’ve no matter how much disbelief you
been able to do. have, you will progress in

                                         "Thank you for
                                                 being so
                                            unbelievably
                                        accepting of me.
                                           I never thought
                                          I would ever fit in
                                              and feel part of a

                                         being the start of everything"

"I was very, very anxious and nearly didn’t go
through the door. But I did, and they were
absolutely lovely and I met some wonderful
                            people there. It’s given me a lot more confidence;
I wouldn’t have spoken to you a year ago."

Adult Achievement Awards
Outstanding learners were honored at the
Hertfordshire Adult Achievement Awards held at
Hatfield House. Many of the learners had
successfully completed courses under difficult and
challenging circumstances. Among the people
whose work were celebrated were learners who
completed courses in English, maths, health and
wellbeing or skills for work.

Winner of the ‘Overcoming Challenges’ award,
Miguel, 45, from Watford, successfully completed the
‘Boost your Confidence’ course while coping with a
debilitating medical condition. He said “Before the
course I wasn’t in a great place. I was unemployed,
depressed and really struggling with my condition.
My wife found out about the course, while looking for
something to build my confidence and get me back
into work”.

Winner of the Progression Award was a single mum
of five, Katie from Hemel Hempstead, who
completed the Employability Course.

Katie’s tutor said, “As soon as Katie stepped into the
classroom you could tell she felt happy and
comfortable and it was wonderful to watch her grow
in confidence.”

After the course Katie secured a part-time role with
a travel company which she really enjoys. She has
also joined the Open University studying sociology
with a view to getting a degree in psychology and
criminology and ultimately becoming a forensic
psychologist.

Chantal Lommel
Head of Hertfordshire Adult and Family Learning Service
Chantal has been a teacher and manager in Adult Education for 17 years. She
holds a Post Graduate Diploma in assessing and teaching people with dyslexia
and she is a trained therapeutic counsellor with a Master’s Degree as a
therapist. Her whole career in education has been focused on creating and
providing suitable learning opportunities to young people and adults with a
variety of barriers to learning. Her work ethos is based on working in
partnership with local organisations, charities and offering life chances to
those who need help re-engaging with learning or with their communities.
“The job market is more competitive than ever. As an adult, it can be tough taking
the first step back into education, especially if you struggle with a long-term health
problem or disability. It is also hard to get back to learning if you have taken a break
to raise a family, to look after someone else or if you have recently lost your job.
Learning something new can boost your self-esteem and help you meet new
people. There are a number of different routes back into education specifically
tailored to suit adult learners. I hope that you will find something of interest in this
course guide to help you start or get back on your learning journey.”
