Closely associated with the great poet
WB Yeats, the magnificent Lissadell Estate,
with its celebrated place in the history of
modern Ireland, and featuring some of the
finest gardens and architecture in the
country, is a “must-see” destination.
In a beguiling setting of great natural
beauty, Lissadell is the home of husband
and wife Edward Walsh and Constance
Cassidy, who purchased it in 2003 and
transformed the mostly-neglected property into a beacon for tourism in the North West.
The landmark estate is famous as the childhood home of Constance Markievicz,
Revolutionary, artist, activist for the poor; Constance was one of the leaders of the 1916
Rising, the first woman elected to the House of Commons at Westminster and later she
became the first female minister in Dail Eireann (Irish parliament).

• Tour of the House – it’s magnificent stairway, gallery, dining, drawing and

HISTORIC GARDENS
The beautiful Alpine Garden, created in 1740 as a pleasure garden, and the Victorian
Kitchen Garden, established in the late 1890’s, formed an internationally renowned
horticultural business, exporting seeds, bulbs and flower varieties across Europe and
the U.S. The gardens lay neglected for 60 years but have now been restored to their
original splendour.

Sligo was awarded the Purple Flag in 2015 and has
retained the award every year since. Like the Blue
Flag for beaches, a Purple Flag is awarded to towns
and cities that demonstrate a standard of excellence
in the evening and night-time economy (ENTE).
Independently assessed, the ENTE in Sligo has been
judged to outperform larger urban centres.
With over 100 live music acts a month, thriving drama
and cultural offerings and an award-winning gastronomic
experience, Sligo is the epitome of a Purple Flag
destination.You can also read
