不乏與國內外博物館所藏、各墓葬窖藏出土相類可比者，管窺朝代流行變
遷，展現中國古代金銀工藝的精巧絕倫。 「青絲若瀑綰瓊簪，雲鬢釵斜華勝繁」，古時女子攬鏡以金玉裝點頭面的
情形，充溢著古代文人的詩詞，與優美文字相對應的，是更為直觀的精巧
兩宋至元代間，折股釵大行其道。紋樣不繁複，如1號拍品中纏絲、素文 絕倫而意趣橫生的實物。蕭氏所藏，展現了「物」的精彩，以平行與文字
皆爲兩宋流行。到了元代，螭虎釵成爲廣爲流行的新樣之一。1號拍品中 的界域透視歷史，讓人收穫新的詩意。
五枚螭虎釵，花朵作釵梁，身作扭結的雙螭口啣花葉在下，是構成螭虎釵

材，多取立式。4號拍品耳環的飛仙托于猶如佛手般蓮花座上，兩側由細
金絲彎成波浪形的帔帛長長垂下，雖身長僅逾寸，頭飾、飄帶，身前龍首
兩角，無不精到清晰，細節処用放大鏡方能領略，不知宋時工匠如何巧
奪天工。
與宋元相比，明代金銀首飾顯示出的一個最大變化，是以類型與樣式的增
多而在名稱上有了細緻的分別。大大小小的簪釵，均依插戴位置的不同，
或紋飾、式樣乃至長短之異而各有名稱。做工上少了宋元的實心製作，取

designs primarily produced during the Qing dynasty, and is named
bian zan, or flat hairpin. It is used to pin through a chignon, displaying
both of its terminals, hence the sharp ends and the narrow waist. For
similar pieces, see Yang, ibid., pp. 798-99.

A PAIR OF GOLD 'GODDESS' EARRINGS

Images of apsara, goddesses, or child attendants are
common design elements of the Song dynasty decorative
arts. In earrings they typically appear in three-dimensional
form. The two goddesses in this pair stand upon lotus
thrones, wavy robes draping from their shoulders. Despite
their sizes, the hairdress, facial expression, hands, and
the decorating dragon heads are all clearly defined under
a magnifying glass. Similar examples were excavated
from the tombs dating to the Song dynasty in Jinan and
Zhejiang, see Yang Zhishui, Gold and Silver Jewellery in
Ancient China, Volume 1, Palace Museum Publishing,
China, 2018, pp. 290-95.

small pin. Each is fixed with a small tube to the back, for the addition

The two pairs of earrings with hooks typically
dating from the late Ming and early Qing
dynasties, initially designed after the clove
flower, hence its colloquial name, dingxianger,
or 'the tiny clove'. They are fixed to the
earlobes, unassumingly, and are a favourite
for informal occasions.

此號中兩對鈎狀耳飾，起于明末清初，以丁

The three longer pins with a small spoon at the tip
were initially intended as ear cleaners, and these
pins named erwa zan, ear-cleaner hairpin. Popular
during the Qing dynasty, they were worn by both
men and women. The spoon later lost its functional
purpose, and were incorporated into a multitude of
hairpin designs.

During the Qing dynasty, the Manchu and Han ethnic
groups each had their own style of costume, including
headdress designs and decorative ornaments. The flat
and long hairpin in this group is called bian fang, or 'flat
and square', and was commonly used in all kinds of
Manchurian hair styles.

Cowrie shells are amongst the earliest known
forms of currency. In Neolithic China, cowrie
shell currency was in large circulation during
the Shang and Western Zhou dynasties.
During the late Shang dynasty, the bronze
age, bronze was cast into shell forms
as money. During the Spring and Autumn
and Warring States period, Jin, Lu and Wei
cultures started to see such bronze shells
covered with gold leaf such as those in this
lot.

undergarment to aid air circulation, which helped to
protect the outer garments from perspiration stains

Small abstinence plaques, such as the current
lot, were physical signs of the ceremonial
requirement for abstinence before worship of
ancestors, the Heavens or other deities. The
required abstinence usually lasted for three
days and involved refraining from drinking
alcohol, eating meat and fragrant herbs such
as onions, chives and garlic, and from any
intimate acts. Devotional in origin, the small
plaque would have functioned as a private
aide-memoir to the wearer to abstain from
earthly pleasures, but became in itself an
ornament of beauty, admired openly in public
and denoting the status of the wearer.
