Electronic Sports (eSports) are video game competitions, where players play against
each other (individually or in teams). These competitions are usually staged in front of
a live audience, streamed online or broadcast on TV. eSports is a growing industry
and is expected to fully mature in five to ten years (Newzoo, 2018). In 2017 eSports
had a global revenue of US$745 million and an audience of 385 million people
(YouGov, 2017). It is estimated that eSports will generate more than US$1 billion in
global revenue and nearly double its audience to 600 million by 2020 (YouGov, 2017).
This report outlines eSport’s key audience and the organisations/ events the
Australian eSport sector.

There is a large skew towards males, Nielsen found that 74% of Australian eSports
fans are male. 66% of Australian eSports fans are 18-34 years old, with the median
age being 26 (Nielsen, 2018). eSports fans have a passion for gaming and are

ESPORTS ORIGINATIONS
eSports industry is comprised of several large players which run on a national level,
holding events all over Australia and smaller local originations which base events in
certain cities or around a specific game or genre. The tables below outline national
originations and local originations based in Brisbane/Queensland. Majority of the large
originations are based in Sydney and Melbourne and run large scale events in those
cities. There are gaps in Australia’s market; the west coast has little eSports activity
and Brisbane does not see the large scale events that are held in Melbourne/Sydney
