It’s not about perfection. What’s a perfect painting? What’s intere-
sting about a perfect painting?

frase contemporary art is proud to announce the winners of the 3rd Frase Got
Talent Prize, “Painting Now”.
frase is the acronym under which conceals a group of Italian collectors working
in the venetian territory. Their commitment is to enhance and promote the
works of contemporary, young, Italian and foreign artists. Three collectors,
three different generations bonded by a common passion for art.
frase contemporary art collective, partnered by Cescot Veneto, has announced
the third edition of the frase got talent - post internet prize.
The award aims to encourage the talent of young artists who have distinguished
themselves through creative originality and critical interest in the world of
visual arts.
The competition involves an initial selection of 25 works for an online group
exhibition and for a publication of the exhibition catalogue.
Subsequently, 3 works will be selected and will become part of the frase
contemporary art collection.

Three channels (Trompe l’oeil) originates from the attempt to convey a
credible vision of reality through the partition of an image into three channels
(RGB), a techique which is typical of many digital image processing softwares.
My work consists of three plexiglass panels, that show the same print
reproduced into three channels (one for each panel). The original idea of the
print comes from the image of a trompe l’oeil taken from the internet, from
which I selected only a detail. This detail was painted and then photographed,
and finally it was translated by computer into three chromatic predominants.
Thus, the art of painting establishes a slow, tormented, but fruitful relationship
with digital printing, which in turn presents itself as a declaration of lightness,
a portable trompe l’oeil.
This connection between painting and digital printing engenders a broader
kinship with the concept of mimesis, since the art of painting wants to imitate
computer technology while the computer tries to imitate reality.
I have chosen a trompe l’oeil as the main subject of my artwork due to a
presumption of verisimilitude, made analytical and illusionistic at the same
time by the chromatic partition.
This method highlights the hypermediaton which lies behind each process of
image selection and image reproduction, so as to require the eye more time to
spend on the examination of the artwork in order to unveil all its meanings.

The pieces in the Link the dots series are games the viewer is invited to
take a part in. They reflect on the process of creation, selection and translation
of a work of art and of an image.
Powerful artworks are, after all, destined to become part of an history of
images, even more so today in the age of image overload and overlapping
imageries.
Chosen artworks / images are dismantled / deconstructed into complex link
the dots gameswhich the viewer can’t quite solve just by looking at them. This
creates a certain frustration and curiosity which is metaphoric of the art world
itself.
Each piece’s title hints to what a completed game will reveal - sometimes,
though, in an ironic or even misleading way.
Altogether this series seeks to research the concept of attribution of meaning
and significance through pre-established schemes / formats belonging to
language as such, to a given context, or to both.

Driving along Corso Plebisciti in Milan I happen to see Tommaso, in
the act of balancing on the bus stop sign. The painting is re-enacting this event,
through a hybridization of Google Maps views and social media pictures of
Tommaso. Despite the title being Tommaso At The Bus Stop, the sign actually
frames a poster for a classical art show that recently took place in Milan. The
incongruence between title of the work and content suggests the motif of
misunderstanding, while at the same time functioning as substitution of an
index of ‘spatial looping’ – that of the bus route – with an index of ‘temporal
looping’ – that of the classical model. This twofold undertone problematizes
my biographical episode of ‘platonic’ infatuation with Tommaso, within
the framework of a fractured identity. The self, just like Tommaso balancing
himself on the pole, navigates the tension between a real, urban identity, that
hops on a bus, and a virtual one, which is infinitely reproducible, falsifiable, yet
at the same time absolute.
