1April Patnode Aamodt
Gilliam County Fair
Grand Marshal 2021
April Patnode Aamodt is absolutely honored to be selected as the 2021 Gilliam County Fair Grand Marshal.
April moved to Arlington in 1974 when she was just two years old. She was the youngest of six children. Her
father Orval managed the Stone Hereford Ranch and her mother Sylvia was the cook at the Arlington school
for many years. Tradition runs deep as her parents were Grand Marshals in 1993.
Gilliam County Fair was always considered vacation time for April’s family. As a young girl she participated in
all livestock events as well as cooking, sewing and public speaking. Of the 40 awards she won during her 9
years of 4-H, her proudest accomplishments were winning the All-Around Grand Champion Showman,
Homemaker of the year, the honorary Pete Pattee Award and qualifying for Oregon State Fair and competing
in the cooking contests.April began her community service at the young age of 20 as the Swine Barn Superintendent. That same year she was asked by the “Pig Kids” to become their new leader. The Hams Swine Club was born in 1993. She was later joined by Leah Watkins and they were fondly referred to as The Swine Queen and The Pig Princess. These spunky leaders ended up being co-Swine Superintendents. Some of the annual activities included camping trips to Paradise and The Goat Ranch. In May of 1999 her first child, Sylas was born. He joined the 4-H tradition when he was just three months old, in a stroller. He was blessed to have had 26 4-H members as his babysitters! Glory Jean was born in August of 2001. (Glory Jean was named after April’s two 4-H leaders Gloria Davis and Jean Mikkalo). This was the first time April had missed the fair since she was a very young child! By the next year April was back on track with her two kids and Sara Grady in tow. They took their seasoned old trailer and set up camp and soon the Pig Dynasty sign was posted out front. Lots of fun was had and many jokes were cracked during those years. Her kids recall one of the few sayings from their mom that is appropriate to repeat “Come on! Get up! Time to clean stalls! I’ve woken you up 3 times already now get dressed and outside. All the good wheelbarrows will be gone!” As the years progressed, April continued her involvement in 4-H. She was a leader for the Galloping Gourmets Cooking Club, The Hams Swine Club and when her kids were old enough for 4-H she started the Northern Hams Swine Club. Any kid in her club can recall her drilling them with these phrases: “Tuck in your shirt! Spit out your gum! Long sleeves! DO YOU HAVE A LONGSLEEVE? Get in your pens and wait your turn! Don’t let someone one up you! Smile for the judge. Did you comb your hair…nevermind I’ll do it. What’s a hog gestation period?… 3 months, 3 weeks, three days! ” I am pretty sure all those kids will never forget what a hog gestation period is. April truly believes that most life lessons can be learned in 4-H. The value of hard work, time management, public speaking, how to dress for an interview, money management, responsibility, a firm handshake, kindness and compassion for others and how to make a lifetime network of friends. In addition to being a leader she has clerked many events at the fair, narrated modeling, has been an entertainer, organized the style review, seen participating in Adult Showmanship in a fancy hat, volunteered at the ticket booth, donated awards and organized the re-sale hogs at the auction, which she continues to do at the present time. A commitment to her community isn’t just about 4-H for April. In 2017 the town of Arlington was infested by millions of Mormon Crickets. She could be heard saying, “Not in MY town!”. She grabbed a backpack sprayer and went to work spraying crickets before they could lay their eggs. She researched, studied and contacted state, federal and local officials trying to figure out what could be done for future infestations. Along with Jordan Maley at the Oregon State Extension Office and Oregon Department of Ag she has helped organize efforts with landowners and farmers to bring the infestation under control. She was contacted by a production company, interviewed and appeared on the Animal Planet show Intruders. April has also presented at the National Mormon Cricket and Grasshopper Conference in Denver where she has a standing invitation. April is currently employed by Gilliam County as the Victims Assistance Director at the District Attorney’s Office. She has been in this position for 18 years working with all victims of crime. In 2019 she was awarded the Oregon State Victims Advocate of the Year from the Oregon District Attorneys Association. April is quoted as saying “every kid should get the opportunity to be involved in 4-H and being a volunteer and working with kids is one of the most rewarding experiences you will ever have in life. Don’t let a good thing die. Support your local 4-Hers because they are learning lifelong skills. Some of the best adults I know today were once my pig kids.”

YOUR PURCHASE HELPS YOUTH & YOU: When you purchase an animal at the Youth Livestock Auction,
you are buying a prize-winning livestock raised by 4-H members. Your purchase helps support the important
educational progress of our youth groups. It also brings you the choicest beef, pork, lamb, poultry and
rabbits for your dining pleasure. The young people in 4-H programs are learning to produce the highest
quality food for your table. Being responsible, engaging in financial obligations and learning how to manage
their own business operations only scratches the surface of the educational benefits. On a small scale,
however, their costs are higher than commercial producers, so your support is needed.
HOW THE AUCTION WORKS (BIDDING): You will be provided a sales sheet that lists all of the animals,
along with their weights and owners. As each animal is led into the ring, the auctioneer asks for bids in
cents per pound. When you wish to bid on an animal, just raise your hand. The bidding continues until the
high bid is reached, with the animal going to the highest bidder. If you want help in bidding, there are official
Auction Committee Members who will be glad to assist you. Remember, whether you buy or not, your
bidding helps young livestock owners. If you or your organization wants to help, yet have no need of an
animal, buy one at the auction, then resale it at market price to a commercial packer designated by the
Gilliam County Fair Board. Your actual cost will be the difference between the bid price and market price.
HOW THE POOL WORKS: The Gilliam County Auction Committee collects donations from individuals and
businesses of any increment and pools them together. This pool of money is used to purchase animals
raised by 4-H members. The pool helps purchase animals that are not being bought by individual buyers.
For example: Five individuals donate $50.00 each, then a business donates $300.00. We pool those
amounts together and are able to buy one lamb. If you would like more information about the Auction Pool,
