Blake Young Leader Award
Junior Campus
The Blake Young Leader Award is presented every year to students all
around the country who show great leadership in making a positive change
towards a better future for our communities and our planet earth.
Sir Peter Blake is one of New Zealand’s greatest heroes. He was a world-
famous sailor, adventurer and environmentalist who never gave up on
his dreams. He sailed in five round-the-world yacht races and kept trying
until he finally won it on his fifth try – taking him 17 years! He also won the
Americas Cup for New Zealand – twice!
Sir Peter Blake couldn’t have done these things if he didn’t believe in
himself. His style of leadership was to build a great team and empower
them to be strong individually, but to work together to succeed. He is a
great example of leadership, and how, through hard work and self-belief,
you can achieve your dreams.
Devon Pirini was awarded the Blake Leader Award at James Hargest Junior highly regarded within the entire school community. Devon is integral

Jorja Glassey was awarded her Grand Prior in Dunedin on the
14th September 2019. The Grand Prior is the award that takes
many years to achieve in St John Youth of which Jorja has been
a member since she was 8 years old in the Motupohue St John

Through the years Jorja has given over 600 hours to the Bluff

she has received her award already.
Jorja wore a Korowai that was jointly designed by myself and
Helen Wilson taking several months to construct and complete.
The Governor General Dame Patsy Reddy was suitably impressed
with not only Jorja’s Korowai but also that of her team mates who
were also awarded their Grand Prior’s from Bluff.

Gold A Netball B Grade SISS Competition Winners! - 18 October 2019 - James Hargest
Netball
SISS Tournament
For the first time in history the Hargest
Gold A netball team won B grade in a
gripping final. The tone for the Nelson
SISS tournament was set after beating
SGHS A team for the first time in 20 years.
Going into the tournament ranked a
lowly 21st, opposition underestimated
us. However, our strengths were in our
skills and connection on and off the court.
Resulting in winning game after game. The
Coach Rochelle Van Beek and Manager Sue
Yeo were both passionate and dedicated
towards the success of our team. For them
and many supporters it was very rewarding
seeing us demonstrate everything we have
been taught.
Determination secured the semi final
against Waimea ranked 1st. This was
convincingly won 30-21. Which then led
us to a guaranteed place in A grade for
2020, and the final later that day. Credit
to the tough time playing in prem grade
this season, we all gained resilience and
knew that success was not only in the
score, but in the journey. This resilience
was paramount in the final as we closely
chased Riccarton throughout the game. Key
to Gold A, all of us again, lifted one another.
The nail biting final quarter was fiercely
fought, from five down to our team being
29 all seconds before the final whistle blew.
We were tied!! Under a pressure cooker
playoff, to win, either team had to be two
goals ahead. Patience, tenacity and cool
heads enabled us to score those last two
goals and win B grade. This was a fitting
tribute to farewell our only Year 13 player
Kayla Tufui. Winning the grade was the
pinnacle of an entire seasons hard work,
dedication and strong bonds between us as
players, with the coach and management.

Kendyl Hair competed in the National
Aerobics competition recently in
Queenstown. She came first in her
section, the NZCAF Junior Secondary Open

they saw an impressive performance

then had the opportunity to have a go
on the drums, before they all played
a variety of games and ate food while
enjoying the cherry blossoms.
