SPORTS CENTRE | WESTVILLE CAMPUSCOVID-19 On 15 March 2020, a national state of disaster was declared in South Africa in light of the COVID-19 outbreak (per government gazette 43096). In keeping with the instructions of the President of the Republic of South Africa, the Honourable President Cyril Ramaphosa, per the public address delivered on 23 March 2020, the Republic of South Africa was placed under lockdown from Thursday, 26 March 2020. Government gazette 43107 subsequently issued by the Department of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs placed a prohibition on gatherings. After due consideration of further inputs from the University’s COVID-19 War Room team, a decision was taken by University Leadership to cancel the 2020 Spring Graduation Ceremonies. Thesis: The antecedents and outcomes of supply chain collaboration: A study of Ghana’s
downstream petroleum sector
Citation: Supply chain collaboration, due to its ability to reduce costs, enhance internal
efficiency, competitive advantage and profitability, has gained sustained
attention amongst both academics and business leaders. This research used
explanatory sequential mixed methods to examine how the dimensions
of culture, uncertainty and trust influence supply chain collaboration; and
how supply chain collaboration influences the dimensions of collaborative
advantage and firm performance in Ghana’s downstream petroleum sector

Thesis: Military expenditure, institutional quality and inclusive growth in BRICS
economies (1970-2018)
Citation: This study considered the relationship between military expenditure,
institutional quality and inclusive growth in the BRICS countries. An inclusive
growth index was generated for each of the BRICS countries. The research
revealed that Russia has the highest inclusive growth followed by China, Brazil,
South Africa and India. Further the ARDL analysis showed that only Russia
was able to maximise the relationship between their military expenditure
and their institutional quality.

Thesis: Socio-economic, environmental and institutional sustainability and economic
growth in BRICS: What are the best policy options?
Citation: The research explored how BRICS countries can work together to
advance the goals of economic growth without compromising individual
member countries aspirations to sustainability. The study revealed wide-
ranging relationships among economic growth and the novel composite
socioeconomic, institutional, and environmental sustainability indices, and
offers varied radical policy options to improve sustainability in the bloc.

Thesis: Social deprivation and government employment of the non-profit sector:
A two-phased interrogation of the welfare policy-practice phenomenon in
KwaZulu-Natal
Citation: In Kwazulu-Natal alone, government spends almost R1-billion every year in
contracting non-profit organisations to provide welfare services to KZN’s less well
off. The research entailed a detailed five-year investigation of every contracted
welfare non-profit organisation in the province, showing for the first time that
government’s welfare offering is not measurably changing lives for the better.

Thesis: Factors influencing foreign-owned micro businesses - A case of Durban
Citation: The study investigated the factors influencing foreign-owned micro
businesses, with particular reference to African immigrant-owned micro
businesses in Durban. Sociological and psychological factors, as well
as innovation and the need for high achievement, were investigated. A
conceptual framework was developed indicating the various factors that
impact on African immigrant-owned micro businesses and result in successful
entrepreneurship and sustainability.

development financing resources, influenced economic growth in COMESA
countries. Focusing on key growth and support sectors, the research unveiled
mechanisms through which foreign aid links to various elements of economic
growth and the nature of this linkage. Accordingly, the study effectively

GRADUATION 2020Jeje, Kafigi Nicholaus, BBA(UDarEsSalaam), MBA(UDarEsSalaam) Management
Thesis: Developing a framework for entrepreneurial strategies and SME performance
in Tanzania-based bakeries.
Citation: Using a mixed methods approach - the concurrent nested design and a
multi-stage sampling technique - , and based on feedback provided through
questionnaires and in-depth interviews, this study developed a framework of
entrepreneurial strategies and SME performance in Tanzania-based bakeries.
The framework enlightens the strategies that can drive the competitiveness
of Tanzanian SMEs particularly the bakeries.
Supervisor: Dr V Naidoo

Thesis: Local government in the constitutional dispensation: Defining the limits of
local government’s legislative and executive authority.
Citation: The study investigated the implementation of the division-of-powers
provisions in the Constitution. The judicial interpretation of the constitutional
scheme for the allocation of powers was compared with the legislative, fiscal,
intergovernmental, and administrative practice of governance in democratic
South Africa. Various reasons for the challenges identified in the implementation
process were explored and interventions which could improve the efficiency
and efficacy of current state administration were suggested.
Supervisors: Professor DW Freedman and Professor GE Devenish
Magweva, Rabson, MCom(USci & Tech) Finance
Thesis: Significance of infrastructure investments in emerging markets to institutional
investors.
Citation: The research ascertained whether institutional investors can derive significant
benefits if they commit their resources into infrastructure in emerging markets.
The study revealed that unlisted infrastructure investments can increase
portfolio performance and dampen portfolio risk. Infrastructure investments
are imperfect inflation hedges and their returns’ volatility is persistent. This
implies that institutional investors must look beyond infrastructure to hedge
inflation and be prepared to face liquidity challenges in emerging markets.
Supervisor: Professor M Sibanda
Mashingaidze, Mugove, BComHons(Retail Management)(CUT), MBA(Solusi) Entrepreneurship
Thesis: Strategy formulation and financial performance in selected small and
medium enterprises in Zimbabwe
Citation: This research investigated strategy formulation and its implications on the
financial performance of Zimbabwean manufacturing SMEs. The results
showed that strategy formulation is moderately and informally adopted
and this had a positive influence on both short-term and long-term financial
performance. This research advances our understanding of the strategy
dynamics in SMEs and its implications on the development of the SME sector
in a developing country context.

UNIVERSITY OF KWAZULU-NATALMeyiwa, Ayanda, BCom, PGDip(MarStud), MCom Leadership Studies
Thesis: Articulating South Africa’s port doctrine for a democratic developmental state
Citation: To address multiple port pricing and governance challenges, the study
focused on ex-ante articulating a port doctrine that best fits South Africa’s
context of a democratic developmental state. Using document and content
analysis to examine diverse themes from port stakeholders, shortcomings
in port devolution and maritime policy were identified. The study’s key
contribution is a new, contextually relevant port paradigm that enhances
strategic social, macroeconomic and maritime policy alignment.

Moyo, Zibusiso, BComHons(NatUoSc& Tech), MSc(NatUoSc& Tech) Finance
Thesis: Financial sustainability, liquidity and outreach of deposit-taking microfinance
institutions: Evidence from low income Sub-Saharan Africa
Citation: The study analysed the financial sustainability, liquidity and outreach of
deposit-taking microfinance institutions in poverty-stricken low-income
Sub-Saharan Africa where microfinance provision is an esteemed tool for
poverty alleviation. The findings reveal that financial sustainability is stifled
by small-scale deposits and inefficiency; that explicit deposit insurance
improves liquidity; and that although a trade-off and mission drift do not
exist in outreach depth, a trade-off exists in outreach breadth.

Thesis: Effects of entrepreneurial marketing on the survival of small and medium
enterprises in South East Nigeria
Citation: The research investigated the effects of entrepreneurial marketing (EM) on
the survival of manufacturing small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in South-
East Nigeria. The study sampled 367 manufacturing SMEs with the view to
find out the sustainable EM dimensions as well as develop an EM model that
would sustain SMEs survival in Nigeria. Based on the respondents’ feedback,
an integrative EM model was developed to sustain SMEs in Nigeria.

of tertiary services provision in the Kwazulu-Natal department of health
Citation: The research contributes to emerging literature on applying the System
Dynamics approach to health care leaders becoming effective and committed
to enacting integral, ethical health care. It recommends paradigmatic
deconstruction in reductionist thinking; shifting egocentric consciousness
and poor health care practices through constructing whole systems thinking,
integrated participative consciousness, and a transdisciplinary integral team
approach, through awakened integral leadership.

service quality, customer satisfaction and loyalty among long-term insurance
consumers in Namibia
Citation: This research explored the relationship between consumer awareness,
consumer protection, service quality, customer satisfaction and loyalty in
Namibia’s long-term insurance industry. The study revealed that if consumers
are made aware of the products and their rights as consumers, and if they
received quality services, they are likely to be satisfied and remain loyal. The
study recommended that long-term insurance companies create product
awareness and provide education on consumer rights.
