CEDERKLOOF BIRDS
Ever since we upgraded the vegetation in the gardens, we have seen an influx of
birdlife to the point where we have identified almost 100 species of birds in the kloof.
Watching the birds always uplift the spirit and adds much to the enjoyment of the
gardens. Here I have a condensed list of our most often seen species, but you can see
a full list of birds on our website at www.cederkloof.co.za in the footnote section.

The New Opstal Tent Camp Our Premium Looseleaf Rooibos A teahouse in Yumi valley Japan

        REMARKABLE MOMENTS 2019
1. We were awarded SA Venues Guest Choice for 2019 for the second year running as well as
TripAdvisor’s Certificate of Excellence award, Afristay’s Guest Choice award and Booking.com Traveler’s
Review Award 2020. Thank you so much to the team, our guests and our platform partners.
2. We opened our new luxury tent camp under a beautiful indigenous forest. It has become one of my
favourite places to be woken by the sounds of the forest.
3. We launched Cederkloof Botanicals with our female staff (and the help of Freddie, our gardener)
4. The Rooibos tea had its first harvest, and the plants are growing very well, which gave way to the
launch of Cederkloof Premium Looseleaf Rooibos brand on sale now at reception.
5. We built a Labyrinth at the end of the long trail for a picturesque walking meditation with stunning
views of the mountains and valley.
6. Werner and Melanie’s first baby Gorgeous Florian (Flo to his growing circle of admirers) arrived,
     welcome to the family!
7. Oom Jan joined our team, and we completed our first all in-house building project, the Owner’s unit

WE HOPE TO SEE YOU AGAIN SOON
     No10. Very well done guys!
8. We installed our first KolKol wood-fire jacuzzi in our continual move towards green infrastructure.
9. I fulfilled a life-long travel dream of spending time in Japan during June, feasting on the Kyoto gardens,
Yumi valley teas and Koyasan’s temples and rituals.
10. We are enormously grateful to our guests for a great year filled with new friendships and fantastic
feedback, for a good rain year and continual growth of the gardens and the health of the ecosystem,
for continual safety, laughter and happiness.

       LOOKING AHEAD 2020
We are hoping to achieve or move towards the following goals:
1. Continual improvements to energy use and guest comfort. The single units will see a rebuilding of
the fireplaces and installation of wood-fired jacuzzis.
2. The work of the Cape Leopard Trust is delivering scientific data on our local leopards and we are
investigating creating a conservancy to protect the habitat for these incredible creatures.
3. We will be streamlining our recycling at the cottages with new bin systems.
4. We are in the process of upgrading the wedding areas
5. Planting of the memorial forest for our loved ones, installing name plaques.
