FOREWORD from John Lutterloch (aka City Slicker)
mazingly, five years have passed since the first City Chatter column saw the

A murky City light of day. Jan Szmigin, owner and editor of Leasing World
magazine had asked me in 2008 to write a column about the City and its
leasing world.
It has enabled me to post my own views of current affairs and those things
affecting our business as well as relay some of the history of our great City.
This annual includes all of last year’s scribblings.
London is more popular now, both as a centre of the finance world and tourist
attraction, than at any time in my life.
The Olympics and our Royal ceremonies have contributed greatly to the latter.
2013 was a good year by many standards. The UK Leasing industry tops the tables
in Europe for new business levels. Car leasing and contract hire is back to its
previous heights and new players have entered the scene.
But, of course, like everything in life, it’s a cycle and there will be down turns
again and the same mistakes will be made.
We should be proud of our place in the UK financing cake where around 30
percent of all capital expenditure is financed by our members.
As I have commented several times our business has both suffered and benefited
from Government intervention, tax changes and accounting changes, but basically
it’s still ‘instalment credit’.
A veteran of all of this is, of course, is “Old Moore” who has his own story to tell
each month from his chair in Bow Wine Vaults, down a cobbled alley just off
Cheapside.

Best wishes to you all from Old Moore and your CC reporter.
