Last updated on 05/01/2022 3General Style guide Marmot Mappings 1.Introduction The attribute of an ASIN can be defined as a property or characteristic of a product. For example, a product’s material, size, color, etc.. An ASIN can have several attributes, which can take several values: And the same attribute value can be used in several ASINs: Mapping will involve the translation of these attribute values. The values will then be associated to the product and appear on the Website. As a result, these values impact the Amazon customer experience. Still, we encourage you to take risks and map even if you are unsure; however please assess the decision case by case, and type a simple dash (-) in the target attribute value segment, removing the machine-output for those values that could have a highly negative impact on our customers’ experience. The project will consist of a set of source segments with one value in each segment. Your task is to provide the translation of the source values in the target column. In projects, the target column consists of machine-translated information. Your task is to post-edit the target values to ensure that they are both correct and can be understood by the Amazon customer. It is important that the target values reflect the source and follow these guidelines. There are two types of projects depending on the variety of attribute values included. For example, the values can be: Amazon Confidential Last updated on 05/01/2022 4
General Style guide Marmot Mappings
1) all of the same attribute, which you can see in the name of the project, in the Project view:
2) of multiple attributes, i.e. where not all the values are of the same attribute. You will also
be able to identify that it is a multiple attributes project by its name in the Project view. In
the case of mixed attributes, you will be able to see the specific attribute of each value in
the context note while you are localizing:
Amazon Confidential
Last updated on 05/01/2022 5General Style guide Marmot Mappings
In fact, for every value, you can see in the context note the “map name”, which can help you
provide a suitable translation.
For example, if the map name is UK.ANY.es.material_composition.gl_apparel, you know that
the attribute is a material composition and will apply to the category "Apparel".
Another example: UK.ES.fabric_type.fabric_type.default, you know that you are mapping a fabric
type that will be applied by default to all categories.
1.1. DO
• More specific context: You may look up the source value on the website to see the mapping
in context. You can even look up in the source website an ASIN with that value. To do so,
you must:
1) Look in the context note for the code starting with B0; that is the ASIN code
2) Look it up entering the following URL format in your browser:
http://www.amazon.[marketplace]/dp/[ASIN code]
For example: http://www.amazon.de/dp/B009FUF6DM
Here is the model for some marketplaces:
Germany: http://www.amazon.de/dp/[ASIN] or http://www.amazon.de/dp/product/[ASIN]
France: http://www.amazon.fr/dp/[ASIN] or http://www.amazon.fr/dp/product/[ASIN]
Spain: http://www.amazon.es/dp/[ASIN] or http://www.amazon.es/dp/product/[ASIN]
Italy: http://www.amazon.it/dp/[ASIN] or http://www.amazon.it/dp/product/[ASIN]
UK: http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/[ASIN] or http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/product/[ASIN]
USA: http://amazon.com/dp/[ASIN] or http://amazon.com/dp/product/[ASIN]
JP: http://www.amazon.co.jp/dp/[ASIN] or http://www.amazon.co.jp/dp/product/[ASIN]
NOTE: However, bear in mind that that value could be applied to millions of ASINs, either
now or in the future, and it's impossible to predict all the possible contexts. Therefore, try
not to make your translation too specific.

1.2. DON’T
• Never leave the Target attribute value segment empty. If by following these guidelines you
cannot map a value, leave only a simple dash ( - ) in the Target segment.
• If by following these guidelines you leave a simple dash ( - ) in some segments, you don’t
need to let us know your reasoning for that choice.
2.General mapping guidelines
2.1. Accuracy
2.1.1. Mistranslation
Ambiguous terms
• If a value is ambiguous and can be translated in multiple ways in your target language, try
to see if you can narrow it down to one thing by using the context words, where possible.
Please also use the category (if provided) and the attribute for guidance.
o E.g.: UK.ES.material_composition.material_composition.gl_apparel // [Value:] Cup:
100% Polyamide → “Cup” can be translated in many ways into Spanish (trofeo,
copa…). However, the attribute here is “material composition”, which together
with the context word Polyamide, tells us that it must be related to a piece of
clothing. Therefore, it should be referring to a “bra cup”. → map as Copa: 100%
poliamida.
• If you find a term that has a very broad meaning (for instance, "band" in English can be a
music band or a strip of cloth) and you don't know which meaning the mapping refers to,
first try to find a translation that is equally as ambiguous. For example, “banda” in Spanish
is also a very broad term. If that doesn't exist in your target language, you should map it
with a simple dash ( - ).
• If it’s possible in your target language, map ambiguous source values that remain
ambiguous in the target with a generic term that can apply to all contexts.
o E.g.: Case (English) could be translated in many ways into German (Gehäuse, Hülle,
Etui…). Hülle should be used because it is acceptable in every situation.
Text that should not be translated
• Text such as model names or inscriptions on products (bracelets, t-shirts, cards, etc.) must
be left untranslated if it’s obvious that this is how they should appear in the target website

(e.g. IGeneral Style guide Marmot Mappings
2.2. Fluency
2.2.1. Character Encoding
HTML tags or broken encoding in the source
If you find tags (like , ) or text that wasn't properly encoded (like î, ÃÂ,
ü), please don't copy these into the target, and still map the translatable content.
However, if the whole value is made up of these tags or badly enconded text, then
please copy-paste the source value in the target.
Exception: Sequences starting with & (e.g. Œ, é, œ) are most probably codes
for special characters (like ä, ß, î and other) or symbols (like ® and ©). If you encounter them,
check in online references (like here or here) what they stand for and translate normally in the
target. If it’s a special symbol, insert it as symbol in the target.
E.g. (FR→IT): Cœurs et étoiles (→ Cœurs et étoiles) → map as Cuori e stelle.
E.g. (US→IT): Acadia® 8" (→ Acadia® 8") → map as Acadia®; 20,3 cm (8 Pollici)
2.2.2. Grammar
Word order
You can keep the original word order if the meaning is clear and it is grammatically correct,
especially if you are using tools that semi-automate the translation (UK-FR example: men’s red
T-shirt > pour homme, rouge, t-shirt), but this is not necessary.
Incomplete values
If the source value is incomplete, translate the parts that make sense and ensure that it is
grammatically correct.
2.2.3. Spelling
Capitalization
You don’t need to correct capitalization errors that may be present in the target (e.g. words
unnecessarily capitalized or in block capitals.)
It's also not necessary to start your mapped value with a capital letter, but you can do it if you
want.
Exception: Alphanumeric sequences, which should be copied exactly source to target (see
point above).
Amazon Confidential
Last updated on 05/01/2022 9General Style guide Marmot Mappings
2.2.4. Typography
Typos
If there is a typographical error in the source, but you understand what was meant to be
written, you should still map it.
Punctuation
You don't need to change the punctuation unless it hinders the understanding of the mapping
(same as with other types of post-editing projects, for the sake of your productivity). Add
punctuation marks (spaces, comma, semicolon, etc.) wherever necessary to help make the
information within a segment clear.
Exceptions: For Japanese target, follow the punctuation guidelines stated in the JP-specific
appendix.
For Chinese target, follow the punctuation guidelines stated in the CN-specific appendix.
2.3. Locale Convention
2.3.1. Measurement Format
Sizes
For shoes and clothing, when you have enough information to convert them (type of garment,
gender) please convert the size into the target marketplace. For shoes, refer to the
manufacturer’s website or use Amazon’s online sizing charts (general or brand-specific). For
clothing, use on-line tables such as these and these.
Exception: If the target languages are Japanese or Indian secondary languages (Tamil, Telugu,
Kannada, Malayalam and Hindi), simply copy the source size in the target. For sizes like small,
medium, large, write S, M, L, etc.
2.4. Other
2.4.1. Compliance
Attribute-specific mapping guidelines
Attribute color.value
For colors given under this attribute it's very important to be as precise as possible.
o If you find fancy or somehow nonsensical color names, or color names inside of an
alphanumeric code, translate all the basic colors and then leave the original source
value in brackets
Amazon Confidential
Last updated on 05/01/2022 10General Style guide Marmot Mappings
o If you can't clearly identify a color (e.g. “Sunshine”, “Kiss me”), just copy the source into
the target. BUT if this source value includes the word "negro", do not include this word
in the words that you put in brackets. E.g. (ES → FR): negro2019 → noir (2019)
Exception: If the target is Spanish, you can use the word “negro” in the target with no
problem, as it is neutral.
o If the value under the attribute color.value is clearly not a color, a name of a shade,
etc. (e.g. “5 meters”), translate it.
E.g. (ES → UK): 5 metros → 5 metres
E.g. (ES →UK): blanco – para hombre →white – for men
Note for JP target: If you find that a translation of this value or its transcription in Katakana
(and not only of the basic colors) is helpful for the JP customer, please write it in the target
and also leave in brackets what is likely to be a color name invented by the brand. You can find
examples in the JP-specific appendix.
[The aim with colors under the color.value attribute is to provide for the target customer a
translation of the identifiable colors while also including what might be a color name invented
by the brand.]
NOTE: You will probably find an example of how to map “color_name” values in your language-
specific appendix. Please note that “color_name” is a former name for the “color.value”
attribute. Therefore, that example applies perfectly to how “color.value” should be mapped.
Attribute color.standardized.values
This attribute is used for refinements on the website, so you can only use a limited list of valid
values. This means only using the basic color ("blue", "green", "purple", etc.) and, if there are
several colors in the source value, you should translate it as the word "multicolour" in your
target language (e.g.: "Grün/Grau/Blau" → "multicolour"). The list of valid values can be found
here.
Examples:
Source value Target Value Comment
(various languages) (French)
Black with gold Multicolore When you have more than one color, map as multicolour
Azul real1 Bleu Map with the basic color
Cremallera doble rojo Rouge When you have the color and unrelated content, only
map the basic color

22X11X4.5CM - When you have a misclassified value with no color
whatsoever, please simply enter a simple dash ( - ) in the
target.
Nacarado nacre Because map name has no category ("gl_category") but
"default" instead and the target language is French, the
target value has to be the most fitting one of the French
column of the color.standardized.values table.
NOTE: You will probably find an example of how to map “color_map” values in your language-
specific appendix. Please note that “color map” is a former name for the
“color.standardized.values” attribute. Therefore, that example applies perfectly to how
“color.standardized.values” should be mapped.
Attribute department.value
Please note that attribute department.value works with valid values, provided in the Appendix
at the end of this guide Therefore, if your language corresponds to any of the target languages
in the table (UK, ES, DE, etc.), we ask that you translate using one of the valid values of the list
whenever possible.
NOTE: If given segment contains more words, please only write the closest department value
without any extra words. Example: “Women’s biker style jacket” → “womens”
However, if you are not working into any of the target languages included in the table or if the
values on the list do not match your source value, please leave the target value empty and
leave only a simple dash ( - ).
Invalid values
Please leave only the simple dash (-) in the target segment for:
• Values of the following attributes:
o inside.diameter
o item_pitch
o volume_capacity_name
• any other value with this structure: {value=“[number]", unit=[measurement unit]}
These attributes should not be showing up in our Marmot projects. Therefore, if they do,
please notify your Project Manager or, if you are an in-house linguist, contact the Mantle
team by filling in and submitting a ticket here.

Sizes
Sizes without enough information, like gender or type of garment: When you can't convert a
size because you don't know if it's for women, men or children and/or if it's a shirt, skirt,
trousers, etc., copy the size given in the source and add the source marketplace in brackets.
Exception: If the target languages are Japanese or Indian secondary languages (Tamil, Telugu,
Kannada, Malayalam and Hindi), simply copy the source size in the target. For sizes like small,
large, write S, L, etc.
Ring sizes
Before mapping them, please check online in which format(s) a ring size is typically given in
the Source locale of your project (it could be, for instance, a capital letter, or a number with
decimals). And afterwards:
o If the source ring size is given in a typical Source locale sizing format, copy in the target
the size and add the source marketplace in brackets.
o And if you are not sure in which Source locale’s sizing format the ring size is given,
simply copy in the target the size without the source locale in brackets.
Exception: If the target languages are Japanese or Indian secondary languages (Tamil, Telugu,
Kannada, Malayalam and Hindi), simply copy the source size in the target.
Specific measurements
For special measurements, simply copy the measurement in the target.
E.g. (UK→IT): 5/8"-11 Thread → Filettatura 5/8"-11
Gauges
If you find measurements given in gauge (e.g. “gauge 12”, “12G”, “12ga”, “12g”), do not
attempt to convert them. Simply leave the source value in the target.
Carats/Karats
Please keep in mind that these are two different measurements, so make sure to use the
appropriate abbreviation in your target language depending on the attribute that you are
translating. If you are not sure, please type out the full word in order to avoid any confusion.
If the percentages for materials don't add up
Please map the values with the percentages as in the source.
If you come across any of the information listed below, please remove it in the target.
1. Contact options (emails/websites/customer service contact) or requests to contact the
seller, regardless of whether the seller is Amazon or not
2. Links to external websites
Amazon Confidential
Last updated on 05/01/2022 13General Style guide Marmot Mappings
[The main reason we ask you to remove information in points 1. and 2. is because we cannot
guarantee that these options will be available in the target language.]
3. Price (including offers/sales/discounts/charity donations/invoices)
o If this type of information is part of a mapping (e.g.: "WW3000K-2Pack
(4.44$/Bulb)"), just remove the part pertaining to the price. If the whole mapping
consists of this type of information, put a simple dash ( - ) in the target segment.
4. Delivery conditions (place/timing)
5. Import/export information (e.g. “German Import”, “English Import”)
o Note: not the same as Country of Origin (COO) (see point 4 of “Do not remove”
for more details.
6. Warranties/guarantees, returns and refunds
o Exceptions:
▪ For values with attribute “warranty_description”, please provide a
translation in the target.
▪ “Amazon Protect” warranties
▪ ASIN that is a warranty by itself (please refer to your language appendix)
7. References to other products / ASIN codes (even if they are offered by the same seller),
whether on an external website or on Amazon.
[The reason we ask you to remove the information in points 3. to 7. is because we cannot
guarantee that it will be available/conditions will be the same in the target country.]
8. The term “new” or “latest” if it refers to time or the condition of the product.
[Because products might remain on the website for a longer period of time.]
9. Product availability (e.g. “in stock”).
[Because this kind of information will be provided and updated automatically on the
website.]
10. Comparisons to other sellers/products, especially in regards to quality.
[For legal reasons: unfair competition]
11. If you come across discriminatory or unethical content, you are free to omit it. However,
please be as objective as possible in making this judgment, and make sure to include a
comment in your email citing the number(s) of the affected segment(s).
12. References to "Patent Pending". References to time-specific information, such as
“Patent pending”, should not be kept in the target, since products might remain on the
Amazon website for a longer period of time
13. The word “parent” should be removed if present in the title, as it is an internal term
that should not appear on the website
Amazon Confidential
Last updated on 05/01/2022 14General Style guide Marmot Mappings
14. The word “VARIATION” should be removed if present in the title, as it is an internal term
that should not appear on the website
Do not remove:
1. Free gifts: We are not asking you to remove references about free gifts. The reason for
this is that sometimes what is called a "free gift" is actually part of the set of product the
customer is buying, as in the example of a cover that comes with a free stylus, screen
protector and dust-plug. If we deleted the whole reference to "free gifts" we would end
up omitting a lot of useful information for the customer.
2. Packaging information: We are not asking that packaging information be removed. The
reason for this is that we might end up excluding information that is relevant for the
customer, e.g. Amazon Certified Frustration-Free Packaging info or, in the particular
case of jewelry, references to the bags that contain the product (i.e. organza bags,
display boxes, etc.).
3. In line with this, translators also should not remove references to packaging weight and
measurements
4. Country of origin: information about the country of origin of the item/materials
shouldn’t be removed.
5. Note: Country of Origin (COO) refers to where the product was manufactured vs Place
of Import, which refers to the location where the product is being shipped from.
6. Amazon warranty: Information concerning warranties offered by Amazon Protect needs
to be post-edited
2.4.2. Customer focus and technical requirements
Missing measurement unit
If there is no measurement unit, try to see if you can guess it from the context. If you can't
guess it, simply copy the measurement into the target and add the source locale in brackets.
E.g. (FR→IT): 40 x 60 → 40 x 60 (France)
E.g. (UK→ES): 40 x 60 → 40 x 60 (Reino Unido)
Material composition abbreviations
With acronyms such as "CO" for "Cotton" and "PA" for "polyamide", translate them instead of
just leaving the acronym since the acronym might not make any sense for the customer of the
target marketplace. You can find them online in sites like https://www.fabric-
house.eu/en/fbh/footer/help-and-info/textile-abbreviations/.
However, if you are not sure what the acronym refers to even after taking context and
attribute type into consideration, please copy the acronym from the source into the target.

Source language discrepancy
Sometimes the source or target languages can be a different language to what is expected, for
example if the project is English into German, but there is an Italian phrase. If you can
understand the value or translate it with dictionaries or other resources, map it. If not, simply
leave a dash ( - ) in the target.
Very long values
When the value is too long, just translate the important information, the essence of the source.
Please refer to your language-specific appendix for an example.
