Seven great things to do in 2021-2022
Up for a challenge? Our around the lakes bucket list for 2021-
2022 offers seven suggested activities for you to enjoy. We
have a feeling you’ll come back to do them again, and again!
And there’s much more to see and do. We bet even our lifelong
residents haven’t visited all our enchanting communities.
Been to Bear Cave lately? It’s our northernmost hamlet. Each
community and waterway has its own storied history, from
Rosseau on the north shore of Lake Rosseau to Walker’s
Point on Lake Muskoka at the south end of Muskoka Lakes
township. You really haven’t lived until you tour our scenic
lakes, learn new tricks on the water, tee off on our fairways,
or stop in at one of our magnificent resorts. Visitor or resident,
we challenge you to enjoy these seven wonders of our world.
#1 Dine Under the Stars
Imagine dining outside, while warm and cozy in winter, under

#2 Cruise our Great Lakes
The waters of Lake Muskoka are home to the RMS Segwun, the
oldest operating steam ship in North America, and one of only
three ships in the world to carry Royal Mail Ship (RMS) status.
Sailing on the Segwun at sunset is magical. For tons of fun, book Photo: Jake Thomas
the pirate cruise on the Wenonah II. The Peerless II, The Tom
Thomson, and Lady Rosseau are excellent choices touring from
the hub of the lakes in Port Carling.
#3 Take a Hike

they save their best views for last, so be sure to hike all the way
to the trails end.
#4 Jump in a Cranberry Bog
Throw on a pair of chest waders and take the plunge. Where else
can you splash around in a sea of bright, red fruit?

#5 Learn to Fly Board
Flip, flop and fly your way onto the bucket list with a flyboard
lesson at one of our ski and wakeboard schools. You’ll take flight
with some of the world’s best riders. If you can do it on water,
they’ll show you how.

Sip a cool drink overlooking Lakes Rosseau, Joseph or Muskoka
at one of our stunning resorts. Old Muskoka charm is steeped in
romantic places such as the Sherwood Inn, where couples have

Santa has always summered in Muskoka. Somewhere along the
line, his secret got out, and Santa’s Village became Muskoka’s
theme park in Bracebridge in 1955. You can sometimes catch
Santa on the roller coaster but nobody’s ever spotted him on the
zip line…maybe he gets enough aerial action on Christmas Eve.

Volunteers help our communities bloom
Every year, it’s great to see fully planted canoes and hanging flower
baskets across our region. Volunteers with groups like Bala in Bloom
and Port Carling in Bloom are to thank for keeping our gardens
growing – for over 20 years in Bala and Port Carling in Bloom has
been at it for twice as long.
In summer, perennial gardens provide an abundance of colour in

Highways 38 & 169. In winter, the downtown is dressed up with skis,
hearts and Easter eggs. In 2020, Bala in Bloom planted a perennial
garden at Andy’s House, the Residential Hospice in Port Carling, and
they also maintain the Heritage Walk brochures, signage and dog
stations around Bala. Port Carling volunteers plant and maintain 11
gardens, 33 bridge boxes, and 30 hanging baskets, and this year
are creating a Community Garden Centre in Archdeacon Park. They
also have a raised walk-in garden there where the community helps
itself to vegetables, and they’re nurturing two young fruit trees.
What plants work best, according to our resident gardeners? Always
think native flora first. Like Jack-in-the-Pulpit, Joe Pye Weed, Trilliums,
Milkweed, Wild Bergamot, and Blue Vervain, to name a few!
Both Bala in Bloom and Port Carling in Bloom are looking for
volunteers, especially in the spring and fall, and everyone — all ages,
any experience, year-round and seasonal — are most welcome.
Their efforts are COVID safe and compliant, and joining a blooming
crew is a great way for high school students to earn community
service hours. Gardening is fun, good exercise, and you’ll pick up
tips from both beginner and master gardeners. Plus, you’ll enjoy
that warm community feeling by pitching in.

While Chautauqua made its mark in Canada here in Muskoka, the
first summer theatre was also born here by the Actors’ Colony
Theatre in Bala in 1934. All that was missing was some big band
music – which Gerry Dunn brought to Bala in 1942 with Dunn’s
Pavilion, now The Kee to Bala. More history can be discovered at
Bala’s Museum, also known as the Anne of Green Gables museum
because of its connection to author Lucy Maud Montgomery.
