10 Tips on Winning a Scholarship
1. Start searching for scholarships as soon as possible. Don't wait until spring of your senior year
in high school to start searching, or you'll miss half the deadlines. Continue searching for
scholarships even after you are enrolled in college. Consider this like a full time job.
2. Answer all of the optional questions on a scholarship matching web site for about twice as
many matches.
3. Use a free scholarship matching service like Fastweb.com. The Fastweb database is updated
daily, and the site will email you notifications of new scholarships that match your personal
background profile.
4. Look for local scholarships
5. Apply to every scholarship for which you are eligible. Pursue less competitive scholarships,
such as small awards and essay contests, since they are easier to win and the money adds up and
helps you win bigger scholarships.
6. Don't miss deadlines. Use a calendar and checklist to get organized.
7. Tailor your application to the sponsor's goals. Read and follow the instructions carefully.
8. If you have difficulty writing essays, try recording yourself as you answer the question out
loud, and transcribe the recording later. Most people can think and speak faster than they can
write or type. Create an outline afterward to organize your thoughts.
9. Personalize your essay and be passionate. Write about something of interest to you. Make your
application stand out from the crowd. Talk about your impact on other people. Give examples
and be specific.
10. Google your name and make sure you have a professional online profile. Use a professional
email address, such as firstname.lastname@gmail.com. Clean up the content of your Facebook
account, removing inappropriate and immature material.

Bill of Rights Institute – We the Students Essay Contest
At the Bill of Rights Institute, we love to ask challenging questions. We also love to reward
students who rise to the challenge by tackling some of the most compelling questions of our
time. For this year's We the Students Essay Contest, we are challenging students to tell us what
civil discourse means to them. The students who provide the most thoughtful, meaningful
responses to this question will receive scholarship awards of up to $7,500.

For this essay, we are asking students to not only share their comprehension of what civil
discourse is meant to be but to also relate what it looks like when it works – and when it doesn’t
– and why. Perhaps they will choose to include mention of a time when they, themselves, were
part of an exchange intended to understand something – how did they go about it? We encourage
them to bring emotion, creativity, specific examples (including current events), and well-
researched facts into what they write.

                             DACA SCHOLARSHIPS

Can DACA recipients receive financial aid?
Yes and no.
DACA recipients cannot receive federal financial aid, including the Pell Grant and federal
student loans.
DACA students can apply for and receive certain scholarships. Applicants should read
scholarship requirements carefully; looking for the following DACA-friendly criteria:
 Openly encourages DACA recipients to apply
 Doesn’t ask about immigration status
     Doesn’t require a social security number
College enrollment eligibility for DACA recipients also varies.
Some states – Alabama, Georgia, and South Carolina – prohibit undocumented students from
enrolling in public colleges entirely. In contrast, a majority of states welcome undocumented
students. In fact, “19 states have provisions allowing for in-state tuition rates for undocumented
students,” according to the National Conference of State Legislatures.
The 19 states where DACA students can receive in-state tuition include:
     Arkansas
     California
     Colorado
     Connecticut
     Florida
     Illinois
     Kansas
     Maryland
     Minnesota
     Nebraska
     New Jersey
     New Mexico
     New York
     Oklahoma
     Oregon
     Rhode Island
     Texas
     Utah
     Washington
Scholarships for DACA recipients are often easier to find in places with open policies, such as
these 19 states.

Where can DACA recipients find scholarships?
Financial assistance has the power to turn college into a reality. Here are additional resources to
help DACA recipients in their scholarship search.

AmeriCorps Opportunities
Some Benefits You Feel, Other Benefits are Real. Perhaps the first and biggest benefit people get
from volunteering is the satisfaction of incorporating service into their lives and making a
difference in their community and country. The intangible benefits alone—such as pride,
satisfaction and accomplishment—are worthwhile reasons to serve.

AmeriCorps programs do more than move communities forward; they serve their members by
creating jobs and providing pathways to opportunity for young people entering the workforce.
AmeriCorps places thousands of young adults into intensive service positions where they learn
valuable work skills, earn money for education, and develop an appreciation for citizenship.
