It’s an exciting time for park expansion in Ames. Not only are
new parks being developed to better serve our neighborhoods,
we have many new features and upgrades completed or in the
works at existing parks. As always, I am privileged to share with
you these park system updates, as well as provide information
on the hundreds of programs and classes to help you stay active.
As you flip through this Parks and Recreation Fall and Winter
Guide, I hope you are intrigued, inspired, and motivated to
explore. John Haila Bronwyn Beatty- Amber Corrieri Devyn Leeson

year to date. In late spring, we held a ribbon-cutting ceremony Representative
to celebrate two new outdoor ping pong tables at Roosevelt Park.
We collaborated with the Friends of Ada Hayden Heritage Park
and unveiled a new wayfinding system for park users. We held
public input meetings on improvements to Franklin Park and
the new Edwards Park in west Ames, and we continue to see
those projects through to completion.
We are developing a new neighborhood park in Sunset Ridge.
This park will provide this relatively new subdivision with

green space and playground equipment. Also, playground 1st Ward 2nd Ward 3rd Ward 4th Ward
improvements are planned for Teagarden Park in south Ames.
At Inis Grove Park, in north Ames, work has started on the
new Miracle League Field and Inclusive Playground. Nearby PARKS & RECREATION COMMISSION MEMBERS
at Homewood Golf Course, plans are in place to remove the
existing clubhouse and replace it with a year-round, multi-
purpose facility that could be rented during the off season for
parties, reunions, and meetings.
In addition to the recent addition of new lights along the
shared use path in Brookside Park, we will soon be working on
renovating the Brookside Park restrooms.
It’s been another great year for the Furman Aquatic Center, and Jeremy Bristow Sarah Cady Sean M. Kelsey Culbertson

County and Story County Conservation. If you haven’t had
the opportunity to drop by the Ted Tedesco Environmental

a visit. This is a wonderful Story County park in Ames.

TOP 5 REASONS TO BE A
VOLUNTEER COACH
1. BE A MENTOR TO CHILDREN. As a coach, the children
will look up to you. You will teach the children not only skills
to the specific sport, but also important life skills including
sportsmanship, honesty, responsibility, respect and more.
2. GET INVOLVED in the community and make a difference.
Volunteering is one of life’s greatest secrets. Being a coach will
allow your child and other children the chance to play, but
will also offer a fulfilling commitment in your life.
3. SPEND TIME WITH YOUR CHILD. With busy schedules it
can be difficult to spend one-on-one time with your children.
Coaching will give you and your child an opportunity to do
something together.
4. TRAINING IS FREE! You do not have to be an athlete to
enjoy coaching. Ames Parks and Recreation will help by

ROUNDED MINDSTM
The format for all Rounded Minds™ programming is high-energy! Children experience the joy of learning new skills by “doing”
and through fun games, songs, and positive reinforcement. Our unique programming focuses on building healthy bodies and minds
simultaneously along with the benefits of learning a second language. They will be learning instruction in Spanish while having fun
and improving sports skills at the same time. This will provide them with an advantage in their future education. The entire Rounded
ROUNDED MINDS TM
Minds programs have a learning benefit while children are playing by giving them an introduction to the Spanish language. This will
provide them with a good edge for success in their academic future. Every Rounded Minds™ class is designed and led by attentive
experts committed to providing safe, energetic, creative and fun educational experiences. Learn more at www.roundedminds.com
SPORTS EXPLORATION & SPANISH: This 5-week program is a great way for children to experience a variety of new games and
activities in a format that is structured, engaging, and most of all... FUN! Rounded Minds prepares children for organized games
without the threat of competition or the fear of getting hurt. Children will have an opportunity to explore a new SPORT each class
(Soccer, Softball, Flag Football, Volleyball, Rugby), improve motor skills, and participate in fun games that will reinforce listening,
teamwork, and the joy of being active! We focus on fundamental motor skills and coordination. This will provide them the
confidence to participate in competitive sports as they grow older and at the same time they will be learning Spanish.
SOCCER & SPANISH: We introduce children to fundamental soccer principles, such as using their feet, dribbling, passing, ball
control, and shooting by using creative games, positive reinforcement, and even songs. Our philosophy is ONE CHILD ONE
BALL. Fun drills and games where your child always has a ball in their feet. There are “no” competitive games. They will have
hundreds of touches on the ball each class, that will help them to increase their ball control and accuracy. This program is perfect
to introduce the sport to kids and give the skills to enjoy the game and be successful when they join a competitive team. Children
will learn the basic rules of the game while practicing sportsmanship and teamwork. The curriculum is designed by Raul Cuñarro,
founder of Rounded Minds™, Professional Soccer coach from Spain, currently working at Des Moines Menace.
